25Claims; (Cl. 131-37) The invention relates to: a. device for apply awrapper'to' the bunch ofa; cigarillo or a" cigar by 'means" of. a rolling mechanism comprising a set ofroll'ers; into which" the-wrapper-ismanually fed."
Ifthe wrapper is; fedby"hand into therolling mechanism" thecigarmakeryapplies an adhesive paste "tofthet rear end or the i la'g'of" said wrapper with his fingers. In;thatcasetharear-end or the "flag; if any; ofthe wrapper meant for covering the head'i'of'f th *cigarillo or 'tl'ief cigar to" be made; is drawn acros'sfafihger provided with paste; This method has" several: disadvantages namely; the'ci'garmaker be skilled; he gets sticky fingers" andhc cannot prevent that" other parts of" the wrapper: than te nagare smeared withpaste: Moreover the rollingmechanism'has tobe stopped momentarilyinordertoenable the cigarm'aker" to" apply paste""to the use of" the wrapper.
The invention has. for its. object to provide means overcoming'thesedisadvantages and conducive to a device, which makes it unnecessary to stop'the rolling mechanismfor the purpose of applying paste to the flag or thereap-end of the wrapper: Thus, the production of the rolling mechanismlcan b considerably:increased; The invention contemplatesthat infront of the location, where the' wrapper'is'" fed through the gap betweenitwo rollers of therrolling mechanismra guiding member, for exampleaplate or. a roller, is provided extending .througha part" of: the length' of said rollers attherend; .wher the ahead of the cigarillo or the cigar is made. It is still another object of the invention to provide means for periodically applying paste to said guiding member.
In this device the cigarmaker need only to press the flag or the rear end of the wrapper with his finger on said guiding member in order to have the lower side of said flag or rear end pasted. Owing to the rotation of the rollers of the rolling mechanism the Wrapper is drawn automatically into the space surrounded by said rollers and the fla or rear end of the Wrapper is slid across the guiding plate or the guiding roller in contact therewith. It has been found that for making the head of the cigarillo or the cigar the rolling mechanism need not to be stopped, so that an increase of production of -20% can easily be obtained.
In order to avoid that the cigarmaker is hampered, when applying the flag or the rear end of the wrapper to the head of the bunch, by the paste applying parts, the guiding member may be advantageously so constructed that it is adapted to move'from and towards-the rollingmecha nism. The means for applying paste to said guiding'member may become active when said guiding member is removed from the rolling mechanism, so that they may be providedqat 'a place where they do not hamperthe cigarmaker when controlling the'movement ofthe'rear-or flag end of th wrapper during thefeeding thereof to the rolling mechanism.
For detailed explanation of' the invention reference is made to the'accompanyingdrawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device made according to the invention having a" guiding member or plate for'applyingpaste-to the'fia'g-or rear end of a cigaronlike wrapper; v
Fig. 2 is a partof-a-similar'device, in whicl'iifor the guidinggmember, is in form of'a roller. A
Fig. 3'is a sectional view'of'thedevice of Fig. 1 seen in one end position. A
Fig-4 isa sectional view ofrthe'devioeofFi-g. 1 seen-inanother endpositibni. s
Fig: 5-is a front elevational' view" of the-device of Fig. 4; 7
In the drawings there'areseen and designated by numerals I 2 3 and l'four rollers 'of a' known rolling mechanism by meansofwhich a binder leaf can be wound around a portion: of. scrap tobacco and a-wrapperrleafcanbe wound around the bunch thus obtained. The binderleafrand' the wrapper leaf" are introduced" into the rolling mechanism through a gap provided between: the rollers I and" 2- and" are seized by; the scrap" tobacco or'thebunch'; respectively; which''is"con"- tained in the space defined and surrounded by said rollers I, 2, 3 and 4. Near the forward end of the mechanism constituted by conical ends 5, 6, I, 8, 9, I 0 of the rollers, which ends are formed by solid cones or conically wound helical springs, a guiding plate or member I l is provided which in one position is in front of the gap between the rollers I and 2 (Fig. 3). In that position said guiding plate II extends a relatively small distance from and near the end of the rolling mechanism, where the head of the cigarillo or the cigar is formed. It partly covers roller I and its conical end 5. If the wrapper is drawn into the rolling mechanism it is slid with its rear end or flag across the guiding plate II in contact therewith. This plate I l is supported by an arm I2, which is secured to a rotatably mounted shaft I3 carrying also arms l4 and I5. The arm or extension M abuts against the arm I6 of a two-armed lever, which is rotatably mounted about a horizontal shaft I I journalled in a suitable bearing I'm. Th other arm l8 of said lever is provided with a resilient wir applicator 19, which may be drawn into a container 2| containing an adhesive paste, by a spring 20 extending to and anchored on arm 18, said spring acting on the lever IS, It. Attached to the arm [5 is a driving-rod 22 driven by the motor (not shown) of the cigar-making machine. If the rod 22 is pulled to the left (according to the arrow), the guiding plate I is moved in a direction away from the rolling mechanism and the lever l6, l8 lifts the applicator l9 out of the paste container 2| (Figs. 4 and 5).
The applicator I9 is made of thin wire metal and it is very flexible. When it is lifted (from its position I9), it droops a little, so that the guiding plate ll moving at the same time in a horizontal plane, is touched by said applicator. The latter slides then on the upper surface of said plate and thereby transfers a portion of the paste on said plate.
If the guiding plate is in a position (Figs. 4 and 5) remote from the rolling mechanism a binder leaf can be easily introduced in said mechanism. If, on the other hand, the rod 22 is pushed to the right (according to the arrow), the guiding plate 1| returns to its position (Fig. 3) in front of the end portion of the rolling mechanism and the wire applicator i9 is again immersed in the tank 2! containing said paste. In that position of the guiding plate H a wrapper (not shown) can be fed into the rolling mechanism. If the wrapper is drawn into the rolling mechanism to such an extent that the rear end or the flag thereof has reached a position vertically above the guiding plate l l, the cigarmaker need only to press said end of the wrapper on the plate by means of one of his fingers in order to have applied the paste carried by said plate to the lower side of the rear end or the flag of the wrapper. During the pasting operation the rolling mechanism need not to be stopped.
In the embodiment according to Fig. 2 the plate ll includes a guiding-roller 23. But for the inclusion of this roller the device is of thesame construction as that according to Fig. 1 and operates in the same way.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for applying a wrapper to the bunch of a cigarillo and like product; comprising, in combination, a set of rollers constituting a rolling mechanism having a forward end and into which said Wrapper is to be fed, a member for receiving the flag of the wrapper, an arm adapted to said member, and driving means adapted to cause reciprocation of said arm and said member between a position at the forward end of the rollers, where the head of the cigarillo or cigar is made, and a position above the trough and in the path of the paste applying applicator, said driving means being also arranged to operative-1y coact with said paste applying applicator.
2. A device for adhesively applying a wrapper to the bunch of a cigarillo and like tobacco product; comprising a set of rollers including a forward'end and constituting a rolling mechanism for the cigarillo to which said wrapper is to be applied, a guiding member past which the flag of said wrapper is fed to said rolling mechanism, an arm arranged for swinging movement about a vertical axis and operatively coacting with said guiding member, a reservoir for containing an adhesive, said reservoir being positioned adjacent said forward end of said rolling mechanism, an applicator arranged for swinging movement about a horizontal axis and adapted to dip into said reservoir and to transfer adhesive therefrom to said guiding member, and means reciprocably moving said applicator about said horizontal axis and said guiding member about said vertical axis in timed relation to each other so that said applicator is swung out of said reservoir for transfer of adhesive to said guiding member when the latter is moved from a position adjacent said forward end of said rolling mechanism to a position above said reservoir for cooperation with said applicator.
