Abstract

Cigar-making machines.-In a rolling and wrapping machine comprising a nest of rollers 3, some of which are supported in a fixed frame 2 and the rest in a hinged lid 6, the rollers are connected to the driving mechanism by shafts. 17, 23 articulated at their points of connection with the rollers and the driving mechanism, to enable rollers of small diameter to he used, particularly for rolling small cigars. As shown, the lower rollers are each connected to a driving pinion 22, Fig. 4, by a shaft 23 connected at its extremities, by simple joints 25, 24, to the roller 3 and to the spindle 26 of the pinion. Each of the upper rollers is connected to the corresponding pinion 22 by an extensible shaft 16, Fig. 3, connected at its ends by universal joints 14, 15 and 19, 20 to the roller 3 and to the spindle 21 of the pinion. The shaft 16 consists of a tube enclosing two shafts 17, 18 of semi-circular section connected respectively to the joint members 15, 20. The pinions 22 mesh with a toothed wheel driven from a pedal 34 through a chain 33 and belt gear 30, 31, the chain wheel 32 being connected to the shaft of the pulley 30 by a free-wheel, and the chain 32 being returned by a weight on its free end. In operation, the lid 6 carrying the upper rollers is raised by means of a pedal 13 and a chain 7. Leaf or cut tobacco is introduced into the nest of rollers, the lid is allowed to close, and the tobacco is rolled by actuating the pedal 34. The lid is again raised, a wrapper is introduced over a glueing roller 46, and the lid is closed and the cigar finished by a single stroke of the pedal 34. The device for applying glue to the wrapper comprises a container 36, Fig. 7, in which rotate rubber or like rollers 45, 46, the roller 45 turning in the glue and being connected to the shaft 38 of the roller 46 by belt gearing. The shaft 38 is driven by a ratchet wheel and a pawl on the lid 6 when the lid is closed. The machine may be driven by an electric or other motor instead of from a pedal.
