UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 7 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in blade sharpening devices, particularly razors.
An object of the invention is to provide a blade sharpening device having improved means for automatically reversing the position of the blade in relation to the sharpening stone.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved tension means both for reversing the position of the blade and maintaining the edge of said blade in a firm contact with the sharpening stone.
A further object of the invention is to provide adjustable means for maintaining the honing stone in the proper sharpening position with relation to the blade to be sharpened.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing taken in connection with the appended claims. However, I desire to have it distinctly understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details shown or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as would fall within the scope of the claims.

The present device consists of a base or frame generally designated ll preferably formed of sheet metal and which is supported on feet 12 made preferably of rubber or any suitable ma terial. Said frame II is provided with a substantially central longitudinal aperture or opening l3 which is bounded on opposite sides by edges is and 15 respectively. Within said opening l3 and adapted to slide back and forth therein is a carriage generally designated I? which i made up preferably of three sheets or plates of metal l8, I9 and whose cross-section is shown in detail in Fig. 7 taken on line ll of Fig. 1. Said sheets I8, [9 and 26 are fastened together by bolts 2|. The top sheet 58 is punched through and an ear bent up in order to form handle H by means of which carriage Il may be manually operated.
The carriage ii carries a holder generally designated 22 which embodies two elongated concaved metal plates 23 having hinge knuckle loops 24 at one longitudinal edge. The holder 22 is pivotally attached to the carriage H by means of the loop heads 2'5 of bolts 26 which are fastened to said carriage. Said pivotal attachment is accomplished by inserting rod 21 through knuckle loops 24 and loop heads 25. Rod 21 is provided with an arm 28 which assists the reversing of the blade to be sharpened, as will be explained in further detail below. Said holder 22 is provided with a spring wire hook 2S pivotally attached to one of the plates 23 by means of rivet 30 (Fig. 6). By means of hook 29, the handle 3| of a razor 32 may be secured in a clamped position between plates 23 which can open and close to accommodate said handle.
Alongside the opening I3 is a secondary longitudinal opening 33 within which the mechanism for reversing the position of the razor blade opcrates. Cam plate M which moves longitudinally within said opening 33 is pivotally attached by means of pin 35 and ring 36 to lip 31 of plate 38. Said plate 38 is in turn fastened to carriage H by means of bolts 26 and nuts 39. Attached to one of bolts 26 is a spring wire 40, the other end of which is placed through a hole in the lower apex of cam plate 34. Said wire 40 performs the function of returning the cam plate 34 to the non-operating position, as shown in the center of Fig. 2.
One of the blades or plates 23 of holder 22 has a small lip M which is off center of the pivot axis formed by pin 2?. To said lip 4| is attached a tension spring 42 by means of the wire ring or 100p Ma secured to this lip, the other end of which spring is encircled around pin 35.
Extending through openings in the side of frame H are flat shafts or arms 43 which pass through slot 46 of split or slotted threaded sheaths 45 into which adjustment bolts 46 are fitted. Said bolts 46 have heads 41 which facilitate manual adjustment.
Shafts or arms 43 pivotally support braces 48 having shoulders 49 upon which a honing an opening through this side wall and are held by recess 55 in said shafts. The shafts 43 are each supported and maintained in contact with the top of the opening in the frame edge 54 by means of yieldable spring wire 56 which is fastened to the frame by means of bolt 5'! and nut 58. ported in tension by pin 59, tending to force shaft 43 upward against the bottom surface 60 of bolt 46. Thus the height of honing stone 59 can be adjusted by turning screw bolts 45 downward or upward which causes the raising or lowering of the honing stone with relation to frame li. This allows the operator of the present device to determine the angle of bevel sharpening that is to be made on the cutting edge of the razor blade. The higher the surface of stone 59 is raised, the smaller will be the sharpening angle. Lowering the stone will increase the sharpening angle. Also, since the honing stone brackets 43 are pivotable on bolts 5%, the stone 5B is self adjustable so that the pressure of the razor blade 32 upon said stone will cause the latter to adopt the proper angle of pitch for the optimum sharpening position. Thus the stone will assume the same angle as that at which the blade extends over said stone and the pressure of its edge on the stone is substantially uniform throughout its length.
In operating the blade sharpener of the present invention, a razor is fastened onto the carriage with the handle 3| placed between holder plates 23 which open upon hinge knuckle loops 24, while hook 29 is swung out of position. The plates 23 and handle 3| are fixed in rigid cooperation by wire locking hook 29 in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. Razor blade 32 extends over the honing stone 50 while the plates 23 hold the shank of said blade in substantially rigid position, and the arm 28 of the hinge extends between the spaced cheeks of the handle.
As the carriage i1 is moved longitudinally in one direction on frame II the holder 22 is held positioned firmly against the top edge SI of cam 34 by means of the action of spring 42 on lip 4!. This position is maintained because of the lip 4i being oif-center of the pivot axis formed by rod 21. As the carriage I! together with the razor and cam plate 34 move toward the left (see Fig. 2) the inclined cam edge 52 meets the slot edge 63 of opening 33, said edge 63 causing cam plate 34 to tilt and push upwards against holder 22. The tilted cam edge 6|, together with curved or inclined cam edge 64., as shown in dotted outline in Fig. '2, causes holder 22 to rotate on rod 21 until the binding juncture between spring 42 and lip 4| passes over the 7 center to the reverse or opposite side of axis of rod 2'1. When that point is reached the spring 42 helps to turn the holder 22 to the other side of hinge .pin 21 and holds it down firmly on the other cam edge 6| as shown in dotted lines, Fig. '2. The position of the razor has thus been reversed and the other side of the blade 32 has been presented to the surface of the honing stone 50, associated along the longitudinal side of base I 1. While the present invention, as to its objects and advantages has been described herein as carried out in specific'embodiment thereof, it is not desired to be limited thereby but it is intended to cover the invention broadly within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, I claim:
1. A blade sharpening device comprising a base including a top wall provided with a longitudinal slot and shoulders at the opposite ends of this slot, a reciprocable carriage on said base, a blade holder pivotally mounted on the carriage, a honing means at one side of the base on which a blade held by said holder rests, said holder being reversible on its pivot to reverse the blade on the honing means, a cam plate pivoted on the carriage and provided with inclined cam surfaces on its opposite edges arranged. to engage said shoulders at opposite ends of the carriage movement to swing the cam plate on its pivot, said plate being also provided with inclined cams at opposite ends of its top edge arranged to operate the holder to reverse it on its pivot by swinging action of the cam plate, and a spring connected at one end to the carriage and at its other end to the holder at a point off-center of its pivotal axis and swinging across said aXis on reversing movements of the holder to retain the holder in the different honing positions.
2. A blade sharpening device which comprises a base, reciprocating carriage means movable on said base, a pivotable razor holder on said carriage, cam means for reversing the position of said holder comprising a plate pivotally mounted on the carriage independently of the holder and provided with oppositely inclined cam surfaces on its opposite edges, shoulders on the base positioned to engage said cam surfaces at the limits of the movement of the carriage to shift the cam plate in opposite directions, cooperating means on the cam plate and holder to reverse the holder by opposite movements of the cam plate comprising cam surfaces on the top edges of the plate engaging the holder, a spring connected to the holder laterally of its pivotal axis to :hold it in reversed positions, and a stone held in longitudinal association with said base in position to be engaged by a razor blade in the holder.
3. A blade sharpening device which comprises a base, reciprocating carriage means movable on said base, a pivotable razor holder on said carriage, cam means for reversing the position of said holder comprising a pivoted plate provided with cam surfaces on its opposite edges, shoulders on the base positioned to engage said cam surfaces at the limits of the movement of the carriage to shift the cam plate in opposite directions, cooperating means on the cam plate and holder to reverse the holder by opposite movements of the cam plate comprising cam means on the top edge of the plate engaging the holder, a spring connected to the holder laterally of its pivotal axis to hold it in reversed positions,
and a stone held in longitudinal association with said base in position to be engaged by a razor blade in the holder, means whereby the height of said stone may be adjusted with relation to said base, and means mounting said stone for self-adjustment to the angle at which the blade is held by said holder including resilient yieldable means supporting the stone for bodily vertical movement and maintaining a uniform pressure on the blade.
4. A razor blade sharpening device which comprises a base, a reciprocating carriage on said base, a pivotable razor holder on said carriage, cam means for reversing the position of said holder comprising a pivoted plate provided with cam surfaces on its opposite edges, shoulders on the base positioned to engage said cam surfaces at the limits of the movement of the carriage to shift the cam plate in opposite directions, cooperating means on the cam plate and holder to reverse the holder by opposite movements of the cam plate comprising cam means on the top edge of the plate engaging the holder, spring means connected to the holder laterally of its pivotal axis retaining the holder in its reversed positions, a stone held in longitudinal association with said base in position to be engaged by a blade in the holder, and resilient yieldable means supporting said stone and yicldable to permit vertical bodily movement of the stone with the pressure of the razor blade upon said stone to maintain uniform pressure.
5. A razor blade sharpening device which comprises a base, a reciprocating carriage on said base, a pivotable razor blade holder on said carriage, a cam plate pivotally attached to said carriage independently of the holder and provided with cam means on its upper edge engaging the holder, means on the base cooperable with the cam plate by movement of the carriage at the extremes of its movement to swing the cam plate in opposite directions, a lip on said holder, said lip being off-center of the pivotal axis of said holder, spring means connecting said lip and said carriage and movable past the pivotal axis of the holder by said movements of the cam plate, said holder being pivotally reversible by the combined means of the cam means on the upper edge of said cam plate and said spring, a blade sharpening stone held in association with said base, and means mounting said stone in position to be engaged by a blade carried by said holder.
6. A razor blade sharpening device which comprises a base, a reciprocating carriage on said base, a pivotable razor holder on said carriage, a cam plate pivotally attached to said carriage independently of the holder and provided with cam means on its top edge engaging the holder, means on the base to engage the cam plate at the opposite ends of the movement of the carriage to swing the plate in opposite directions, a lip on said holder, said lip being off-center of the pivotal axis of said holder, spring means connecting said lip and said carriage and movable past the pivotal axis of the holder by said swinging movements of the cam plate, said holder being pivotally reversible by the combined action of the cam means on the top edge of said cam plate and said spring, a stone held in association with said base in position to be engaged by a blade carried by the holder, the height of said stone being adjustable with relation to said base, and yieldable resilient means supporting said stone for bodily vertical movement and yieldable with the pressure of the razor blade upon said stone.
7. A razor blade sharpening device which comprises a base, a reciprocating carriage on said base, a pivotable razor holder on said carriage, a pivotable cam plate attached to said carriage independently of the holder and provided with cam means on its top edge engaging the holder,
shoulders on the base in position to be engaged by the cam plate at opposite ends of movement of the carriage to reverse the plate on its pivot, a spring on the carriage connected to said holder at a point off-center of the pivotal axis of said holder and swingable across said axis with reversing movement of the holder about this axis, said holder being pivotally reversible by the combined means of the cam means on the top edge of said cam plate and said spring, a stone held in association with said base in position to be engaged by a blade carried by the holder, the height of said stone being adjustable with relation to said base, and yieldable resilient means supporting said stone and yieldable to permit vertical bodily movement of the stone with the pressure of the razor blade upon said stone, and said supporting means for the stone including pivotal means mounting the stone for self-adjustment to the angle at which the blade is held by said holder.
