SCISSORS HONING AND CORRUGATING DEVICE Filed May 18, 1951 Mariam L. Erna/is INVENTOR Patented June 14, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT MARION L. BROOKS, OF RAINIER, OREGON SCISSORS HONING AND CORRUGATING DEVICE Application filed May 18,
u of such scissors or shears in a proper and rigid position to permit of the edge thereof being acted upon by a hone; and the object is the provision of a device for this purpose that is characterized by simplicity in construction, cheapness to manufacture, and re liability and efliciency in practical use.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement in practical use.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 1 is a sectional view approximately on the line H of Figure 2 and illustrating the manner in which the hone is guided when sharpening the blade of a. shear or scissors by the improvement.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the supporting stud for the blade.
Figure 6 is a perspective View of the clamping member for the blade.
As disclosed by the drawing it will be seen that my improvement essentially includes a metal plate 1. The plate has its end at two of its opposite corners formed with right-angularly arranged extensions in the nature of ears 2. These ears receive therein the ofiset ends of trunnions on the angle arms of a rod 3. The rod is bent to substantially U-shaped formation, and one of the trunnions 4 on one of the parallel arms 5 of the said rod is headed and is engaged by a wing nut 6. The plate 1 is, at approximately the center thereof, provided with a transverse opening 7 which is of a length almost equaling the width, and the opening receives therein and has its side walls contacted by a lug 8 provided upon a cross sectionally round stud 9. The stud has a threaded bore that has screwed therein the threaded stem 10 of a winged head 11. Obviously by slidlng the stud through the slot or opening in the plate 1931. Serial No. 538,314.
1 and by screwing the bolt home the stud is held adjusted on the plate.
The plate is provided with a second transverseslot or opening 12 of a less length than the slot or opening 7 the said opening 12 designed to receive therein and have its side walls contacted by a lug 13 formed approximately centrally on the lower and right ans gle flange 14 on one end of a metal block 15.
The second end of the block is formed with a lip 16 whose outer wall 17is arranged at an angle with respect to the block. As a matterof-fact the lip 16 is substantially V-shaped in cross section and the body member 15 is provided with a threaded opening 18 for the threaded shank 19 of a wind headed bolt 20. The shank 19 of the bolt passes through the slot or opening 12 and the member 15 afiords a clamp for the blade of a pair of shears or scissors as disclosed by both Figures 1 and 4 of the drawing. The stud 9 is adjusted to afford arest for the outer and non-sharpened edge of the blade 21, and the clamp is'adjusted to hold the blade approximately in a line with the upper edge of the plate 1. The U-shaped rod is swung and through the me dium of the nut 6 is held adjusted at a desired angle with respect to the plate 1 and the rod affords both a rest and a guide for a sharpening hone 22. By adjusting the lug 8 and the rod 3 the hone, which is preferably of carborundum rock, is guided over the beveled edge of the blade 21 at the desired in clination and the hone 22 is moved longitudinally around the edge of the blade and along the guide rod 3 so that a few reciprocatory strokes of the hone will effectively sharpen the blade 21 in an easy and expeditious manner. If the blade is to be provided with a corrugated edge a corrugated file is employed and the file, of course, is moved back and forth against the edge of the blade until the same is properly corrugated. In this operation the guide rod 3 is, of course, properly adjusted and it is thought that the foregoing description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing will fully and clearly set forth the simplicity and advantages of my improved device to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates.
While I have illustrated one satisfactory embodiment of my improved device my features of invention are capable of extended application and I do not wish to be limited to the specific structure herein shown and described. A
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A sharpener for shear blades to be sharpened by a honing stone or to be corrugated by a corrugated file, comprising a plate, a supporting stud for the non=sharpened edge of a shear blade supported for lateral adjustment on the plate, a laterally adjustable clamp on the plate for holding the blade thereagainst, and a swingable substantially U-shape'd hone guide member pivotally supported on the plate, and means engaging one of the pivots for said member for holding the member from swinging. I
2; A support for the blade of a pair of shears to be sharpened bya honing stone, or
to be corrugated by a file, and a guide for the stone or file, comprising a flat plate, having angle ears at two of the opposite-corners thereof, a substantially U-shaped rod member having trunnion ends which are received through the openings and one of said trun= nions being threaded, a binding nut'enga'ging said trunnion, said plate having spaced transverse slots therethrou'gh, a stud having a lug received in one of the slots and said lug contacting the side walls of such slot, a binding element engaging the stud, and said stud affording a rest for the non-sharpened edge of a shear blade, a clamp for the shear blade including a body portion having an angle edge formed with a lug to be received in the second slot of the plate and having its second edge formed with a lip which is substantially V-shaped in cross section'and a binding element passing through said slot and engaging with the body of the clamp.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MARION L. BROOKS.
