I The improved bracket mounting means 7 herein disclosed embody certain improved features over my prior U. S. Patents No. 2,351,531 of June 13,
1944, and No. 2,427,613 of September 16, 1947, one important object of the present invention being to provide a bracket support which is designed to be moved Vertically against the tension of a suitable retaining spring, to dislodge the device from a securing element whereby the bracket arm may be swung to the right or to the left to an out-of-the-way position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved swinging Wall bracket having as an element thereof a, notched cam, in which the bracket is engaged when'in set-up or working position, wherein the bracket may be dislodged or disengaged (from the retaining notch to be swung to the right or to the left to an out-ofthe-way position, without first having to shift or disengage latches or pawls' or other lockingmeans, such movement of the bracket being ef-' fected solely by the operationof applying force thereto a vertical direction as a preliminary to swinging the bracket laterally.
Another object of the invention is to provide a supporting bracket of the character described wherein there are employed two plate members one of which is permanently secured to-a support while the other one is desig-ned'to beslidably engaged to the fixed plate, with means for establishing an interlocking connection between the arm and the twoplates when the arm has been swung to operating positionuwherebythe disengagement of one of the platesfrom the able plate which is slidably engaged withifthe fixed plate and on which i'spivotally carried" an article" supporting, arm with spring means for normally urging movement of the article supporting arm in one direction on its swingi'ng axis for engagement with a holding notch, and with means connected with thefarm and adapted to turn therewith which, when the armis in work ing position, functions 'to lock'the two plates toother is prevented until the arm is swung to'the V Still another object of the invention is to provide in atake down type swinging wall bracket of the character stated, a novel shiftable latching element between the fixed plate and the movable-plate, which latching element i maintained against movement in a direction which would release the plates one from the other, so long as the bracket arm is in operative position, the swinging of the bracket arm to inoperative or out-of-the-way position simultaneously releasing the latching element for shifting movement whereby the connection between the two plates may be broken.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become'apparent as the description of the same proceeds and the. invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following, detailed description taken in-connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described since obviousmodifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

Referring now more particularly to the drav ings wherein the first embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, the numeral I generally designates one of the two relatively movable plates of the bracket structure, this plate being designed to be secured to a wall or other fixed support. The fixed plate ill comprises a back portion H through'which are formed the suitable openings F2 for the passage of mounting screws or the like.. The opposite longitudinal edges of the fixed plate l are turned in to form the spaced parallel guide flanges I3 which flanges, as are clearly shown in Figures 1, 3 and 5, are spaced from the front face of the body plate H to provide the guide channels [4.
The body portion II of the fixed plate has formed therethrough in the center thereof, the rectangular opening I5 for the purpose hereinafter set forth. i
The numeral i6 generally designates the shiftable plate which is connected with the fixed plate and maintained inposition in front of the same by the flanges 13. This shiftable plate [6 comprises the fiat back portion ll which is of an overall width substantially equal to the width of the space between the confronting faces of the channels 14', as shown in Figure 3.
The top and bottom edges of the shiftable plate I5 have integraltherewith the forwardly directed ears I8 and 69 respectively, the ear [9 beingof an overall width slightly less than the width of the space between the confronting edges of the flanges !3 as shown in Figure 2, while the ear i8 is of the same width as the back plate ll. Thus it will be seen that when the longitudinal edges'of the back plate are disposed so that they can be slid down in the channels M, the lower car 29 will pass down'between the flanges l3 while the top ear I8 will come to rest upon the top edges of the flanges 13 as shown in Figure 3, thereby limiting the downward movement of the shiftable plate with respect to the fixed plate. The overall length of the shiftable plate is such that when it is in this position upon the fixed plate the cars will have the fixed plate disposed therebetween.
The top and bottom ears [8 and I9 are provided respectively-with the openings 26 and ii which are in alinement to receive the pivot pin or post 22 which extends between the. ears as shown and has its top and bottom ends turned or swaged as indicated at 23 to maintain it'in position between the two cars.
As shown the top and bottom ears I8 and ill of the shiftable plate are substantially semi-circular in form and the top ear [8 has formed integral therewith, throughout the semi-circular part of the edge thereof, the downwardly directed camming flange 24, which edge is of gradually increasing height from each of the two sides of the ear to the center point between the two ends of the curved edge portion. At this point the cam flange is provided with the notch 25 for the purpose hereinafter described,
The shiftable plate It has the back portion 5? thereof provided with a rectangular opening it. This opening is of the same height as the opening I5 but is of greater width as is clearly shown in Figure 2, and the openings are in registration one with the other when the two plate members are coupled together.
Numeral 2'! designates a supporting bracket arm which is formed of relatively wide flat material. The inner end of this arm is turned upon itself to provide the sleeve 28, which sleeve receives the pivot post 22 as shown. The terminal portion of the end of the arm from which the sleeve is formed is brought back against the main body part of the arm to which it is secured by the rivets 29.
The outer end of the supporting arm 21 is not here illustrated. Such outer end of the arm may be in the form of a cam opening drive or any other suitable kitchen accessory and has no patentable relation to the present invention.
As is shown the height or length of the sleeve 28 is materially less than the height of the same space between the ears l8 and I9 and in this embodiment of the invention, the pivot post 22 has positioned therearound, between the lower ear [9 and the lower end of the sleeve 23, the relatively strong expansion spring 36 which constantly urges the arm' 21 upwardly so as'to bring the top end of the sleeve 28 and the top edge of the arm into contact with the underside of the top car 18, when the arm 21 is swung to the right or to the left to an out-of-the-way position or to bring the top edgeof the arm into contact with either of the two sides of the camming surface 24.
When the arm 21 is swung about the post 22 to a position where it is perpendicular to the face of the'plates l0 and IS, the top edge of the arm will engage in the notch 25 as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 5, the spring 39 functioning to force the arm upwardly into the notch whereby the arm will be firmly held against swinging movement.
A portion of the sleeve 28 is cut away and is bent back to extend radially from the sleeve and post substantially in line with the arm 2? to provide a locking tongue 3|, Figure 3.
The height of the tongue 3| is materially less than theheight of the openings [5 and 26, as is clearly shown in Figure 5, and the tongue is so positioned that when the arm 2! is in operative position, that is, is extending forwardly from the platesand has its top edge engaged in the notch 25, the top edge of the tongue will be substantially in contact with the top edges of the openings l5 and 26 and some little space will be left between the bottom edge of the tongue BI and the bottom edges of the openings. This space allows for the necessary downward movement of the sleeve 28 against the tension of the spring 35 to permit the top edge of the arm to be disengaged from the holding notch 25.
Figures 6 and '7 illustrate a second embodiment of the invention wherein the elements carried by the movable or shiftable plate are in inverted order. n
In this second embodiment the fixed plate, generally designated 3|, is of the same construction as the plate [0 and accordingly it will be apparent that a detailed description of the same of. engagement with the fixed plate 3!.

, The shiftable plate 32 has at its top endthe forwardly turned ear 35 which is of a width equal to the width of thebody 33 so that when the side edges of the body 33 are inserted in the guides of the fixed plate 3i this ear will comeytorest upon the upper ends of the inturned flanges of the fixed plate to maintain the shiftable plate in position. The top ear 35 is not're'quiredto project as far forwardly as the ear l8, and, as shown in Figure '7, this ear is relatively, short or narrow and is providedv at the proper distance forwardly from the body 33 and between the side edges,wit h the necessary opening 35 to receive the upper end of the pivotpintl. The lower end of the body 33 of the shiftable plate has the forwardly extending ear 33, the outer edge of which is substantially semi-circular as shown in Figure '7 and at the innerends of 38 are cut into provide the notches 39 which flange 40.2 1

The sleeve 44, like the sleeve 25, has out there from, a securing ear, not shown, corresponding tothe ear 3 l, which when the arm 43 is in operative position, extends through the alined openings l5 and,3'4 and functions to prevent the movable plate 32 frombeing shifted upwardly out Figures 8 and 9 illustrate a third embodimen of the invention. In this embodiment the body 7 plate is generally designated 45 and like theother fixed plates, it has side edge portions turned in to'form the guide flanges ii and guide channels 48 and the fiat backportion of the fixed. plate, designated 49, is provided withthe rectangular opening 53 for coaction, as hereinafter described, with a securin'glatch.
Slidably engagedwith the fixed plate '35, is the shiftable plate 5] having at its upper and lower ends the forwardly directed upper and lower ears 52 and 53 respectively which are provided with the openings 54 and 55 in which are engaged and secured the ends of the pivot post 56.
The bottom ear 53 may be of the same general size and contour as theear. 38 whereby such ear can readily pass downwardly between the opposed edges of the inturned flanges 4'! while the top relatively large rectangular opening Ed.
The hingesleeve 59 has formed therein upon the right and left hand sides of the arm, the recesses or openings 5|, one only of which is.here illustrated. The latching or securing element 62 comprises a body plate portion 55 which has a total width equal to the distance between one. outer side of a slot or opening63 and the outer side of the adjacent one. The shiftable or hinge plate of this embodiment is generally designated TI and comprises the flat back or body portion 12 which has at its top and bottom ends the forwardly directed ears l3 and 14 which are of corresponding length but different widths. The ear [3 which is at the top of the hinge plate is, as shown in Figure 11, of an overall width equal to the width of the hinge plate, while the lower ear 14 is of a width to pass downwardly between the guide flanges of the wall plate 70,
The ears l3 and '14 have therein the vertically alined openings 75 and 16 which receive the upper and lower ends of the pivot pin ll.
As will be readily seen upon reference to Fig ure 11 the top ear 13 functions, like the ear l8, to limit the downward movement of the hinge plate with respect to the fixed wall plate H1.
The numeral 18 designates the arm, the inner end of which is turned to provide the guide sleeve 19 which slides on the post ll. The sleeve l8 rests upon the lower ear 74 as shown and it has formed there from the rearwardly turned securing lug 80 which is swung into and extends through the alined openings 85 and 82 which are formed respectively in the shiftable or hinge plate and the fixed wall plate, when the arm 18 is in a position where it is perpendicular to the face of the two plates. that this securing lug 80 functions to lock the two plates together when the arm 18 is in operative position and since in this embodiment of the invention it is not necessary to shift the sleeve 19 upwardly against the tension of the spring 83 which surrounds the upper end of the post 11 and is interposed between the sleeve 79 and the top ear [3, in order to free the arm to swing to the right or to the left, the openings 7 8| and 82 are of the same height and are also of a height only slightly greater than that of the lug 80.
The numeral 84 designates a shiftable cam plate which is interposed between the top end of the sleeve 19 and the upper car 13 and has the spring 83 resting upon the top thereof. This plate 84 has an opening 85 formed therein for the passage therethrough of the post 7! and such opening is preferably formed by cutting out a strip of metal which is turned upwardly to form the actuating finger 86.
The outer or forward edge of the plate 84 is substantially semi-circular and it has formed integral with the underside thereof the downwardly directed cam flange 8? which, midway between its ends and at the high point, has the notch 88 in which is received the top edge of the arm 18.
Thus it will be seen the application of rearward pressure to the .actuating finger 86, as will be readily apparent.
In the first three embodiments of the invention it will be readily seen that the disengagement of the arm from its securing notch is efiected by applying force to the inner end of the arm in a direction to shift the'hinge sleeve longitudinally of the supporting post against the tension of the spring surrounding the post. After such shifting movement of the sleeve on the post has been brought about to the desired extent, the arm will be free so that it can be swung to the right or to the left. Also after the arm has been so swung either to the right or to the left the two plates will be disconnected or freed one from the other by the securing lug, either the type of lug which forms an integral part of the sleeve or the freeing action may be accomplished by actuating the latch 62, whereupon the shiftable or hinge plate can be moved upwardly to disengage it from the fixed wall plate. In all of the embodiments the freeing of the arm for turning movement either to the right or to the left from operative position, is contingent upon the compression of a spring element which functions to maintain locking connection between the arm and the notch in the center or high point of the camming flange.
In the fourth embodiment this compression of the spring isaccomplished by shifting the spring pressed plate 84 rather than by the movement of the sleeve of the arm longitudinally of the pivot post against the tension of the spring as in the first three embodiments.
It will be readily apparent that in all of the embodiments when the arm' is secured in the cam flange notch'it will be firmly held in such position by the control spring so that the normal use of a can opener or other accessory mounted upon best seen in Figure 10, it will be seen that the locking lug 80 not only automatically locks the hinge plate ll to the fixed or wall plate ill against vertical movement at all times when the supporting arm 78 is in the operating position, in which In a plane passing over the top edge of the" arm 18, the shiftable or hinge plate body 72 has a transverse or horizontal slot 89 formed therein. This slot receives a rearwardly extending lug portion 90 forming an integral part of the plate 84, as shown in Figure 12. The opening 89 is of sufficient height to permit the lug 98 to have some free movement whereby the plate 84 can be swung upwardly slightly against the tension of the spring 83, to a sufficient extent to disengage the top edge of the arm '18 from the notch 88. This actuation of the plate 84 is accomplished by it is illustrated, but also automatically locks the arm 78 to the fixed or wall plate 18 in such manner that the said arm 18 can have novertical movement in relation thereto.-v
It will be observed that the supporting arm of any embodiment of the invention can be freely swung by the operator at all times when the arm is not engaged in the retaining notch of the cam plate, and without manipulation of any other part. Thus it will be seen that the supporting arm of any embodiment of the invention can be restored from an inoperative position to the operative position by merely swinging it thereto.
It will be seen that the supporting arm of any embodiment of the invention is frictionally retained in any inoperative position, after having been swung thereto, against accidental swinging from any such position.
It will be observed that the hinge plate, together with all parts borne thereby, of any embodiment of the invention can be readily and easily removed by being lifted upwardly until clear of the flxed or wall plate at any time {when the supporting arm is man inoperative position and substantially parallel to the back portion of the hinge plate Y I claim:
1. A supportingbracliet ,ot" the character de scribed comprising a platedesrgrasto te-mbunted on a support, spaced ears carried by the plate, a pivot pin connected at its ends to and extending between the ears, said pin being secured to the ears against axial movement relative thereto, an
arm member having a hinge sleeve atone end, the'sleeve being between the ears and having the pin extending therethrough whereby the arm may be swung around the pin as a center, means connected with the plate and havingthe arm detachably coupled thereto to maintain the arm in a predetermined working position relative to the plate, and spring means for yieldingly maintain ing the arm and the plate connected means in coupled relation.
2. A supporting bracket of the character described in claim 1 wherein said spring means comprises a coil spring encircling the pin between an ear and an end of the sleeve and maintaining pressure upon and longitudinally of the sleeve for flyieldingly maintaining the arm and the plate adapted to slide on the fiange'when the arm is swung around the pin, means for establishing a locking connection between the. arm and the cam flange when the arm is in a predetermined position with respect to the plate, a springexerting separating pressure against an ear and the ad-' jacent end of said sleeve and yieldingly maintaining said locking connection, and means for effecting release of the locking connection against the action of the spring.
4. A bracket structure of the character stated in claim 3 wherein said cam flange is carried by one of said ears, the connection between the end. of the arm and the pin being of slidable character whereby the arm may be moved axially of the pin, and said spring means being interposed between the other ear and the connection between the end of the arm and the pin.
5. A supporting bracket or the character described, comprising a plate designed to be mounted on a supportspaced ears carried by the plate,

8. A supporting bracket of the character stated in claim 7 with a finger member formed integral with the second mentioned plate and extending upwardly therefrom to facilitate oscillation of the second mentioned plate against the tension of the spring for the release of the arm portion from the notch of the cam flange.

scribed, comprising a fixed. plate, a movable plate, means for slidably coupling the plates together, said movable plate having a -pa'ir of spaced ears, one of said ears having connection with the fixed plate to limit the movement of the movable plate in one direction with respect to the fixed plate, a pivot pin mounted between and connected to said ears, an arm, a hinge sleeve carried by the arm and having the pivot pin extending therethrough, means for establishing a releasable locking connection between the arm and the movable plate when the arm is moved to a predetermined position with respect to the movable plate, said plates having aligned openings, a shiftable latching means separate from the arm and sleeve and extensible through the aligned openings for securing the movable plate against movement in the opposite direction with respect to the fixed plate,
a pivot pin connected between and secured to Y the ears, an arm, means forming a hinge sleeve at one end of the arm and having the pin extending therethrough whereby the arm may be turned around the pin as a center, the sleeve being of a length materially less than the distance between the ears and resting at one end against one of the ears, a fiange carried by the said one of the ears on which an edge of thearm rides in swinging thearm around the pivot pin,
and co-acting means between the hinge sleeve and said latching means for maintaining the latching means extended through said aligned openings when the arm is in said predetermined position. I
10. A supporting bracket of the character described, comprising a fixed plate, a movable plate, means for slidably coupling the movable plate with the fixed plate, a pair of spaced ears carried by the movable plate, one of said ears having engagement with the fixed plate and' maintaining the movable plate against movement in one direction beyond, a predetermined position with respect to thefixed plate, said plates having aligned openings, a pivot pin connected, between said ears, an arm, a hinge sleeve at one end of the arm having the pivot pin'extending therethrough for swinging movement of the arm around the pivot pin as a center, means for releasably holding the arm in a predeter- .mined position with respect to the movable plate,
- 11 and a latching element carried by the hinge sleeve for extension through the aligned openings to couple the plates against disconnection when the arm is swung to the said predetermined position.
11. A supporting bracket of the character described in-claim 10 wherein the arm, and sleeve are movable axially upon the pivot pin, means normally urging movement of the sleeve in one direction on the pivot pin to hold the arm in the stated predetermined position, release of the arm from said predetermined position being effected by shifting the sleeve against said urging means, and the said openings in the plates being formed to permit limited free movement therein of the latching means connected with the hinge sleeve.
