Company a cor- Application Ndvember 5, 1952, Serial No. 318,868
' The'present invention relates to improvements in pressure type containers and more particularly toa valved dispensing head for such containers. An object of my invention is the provision of a novel and simple structure which insuresagainst accidental opening of the dischargeconicla'ims. (011222 394 trol valve, during shipment, 'or otherwisef lTo 7 this end my invention consists in providing a spring closed valve and'a valve actuator which is movable from one position wherein it cannot he accidentally or deliberately operated to open the valve. to another position in which it can be moved bodily to effect opening of said valve.
Other objectswill be in part apparent and in part pointed outrhereinafter. v
In the drawings: v Fig. 1 is'a' fragmentary side elevational view showing my dispensing head attached to a pressure type container;
Fig. 2 is a plan View;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the dispensing head and valve, the latter being closed and the actuator being in locked position;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but shows the actuator opening the valve; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 3, with actuator in operating position.
According to my invention the dispensing head is attached to an end wall ll] of a pressure type container l I such as are used in dispensing shaving cream, etc., said wall having an annular bead,
or shoulder 12, for holding engagement with a part of thehead, as will be pointed out presently.
This end wall [0 also has an upstanding axially positioned hollow boss I3, provided with a central opening I4, to accommodate a spring closed valve l5. This boss 13, as will be explained in detail hereinafter, frictionally engages-a part of the dispensing head.
The spring closed valve includes a tubular housing I6 mounted in said opening Id. The inner end ofthis housing forms a valve seat against which the valve head, or disk |1,-'northespring under compression to'normally close thevalve. Internal pressure also assists in holding this valve closed.
My invention resides primarily in the means for opening the valve and so forming said means that it can be locked in an inoperative position,
such that it cannot be moved to open thevalve l5.
Specifically, my dispensing head comprises a cap .22 having a-;.top portion 23 and depending marginal attaching fiangclil, which encompasses andgrips the bead 01: 11110 {2, on'the container end wall .I D;-- A cylindrical body 25 depends ,aXial-' ly'from said top portion and telescopes over the aforementioned boss l3. If desired, an, internal rib, '26. or circumferentiallyspaced projections, may be formed internally of said body "for i'rictional holding engagement with the boss. A discharge tube 21 extendsradially from an upper portion of the-cylindricalbodyZE.
The-upper endofthis cylindricalbody :ls closed partially by means of a generally hem- .ispherical wall 23. which provides a seat for the .valve actuatori29. 1 vAnfarcuate slot 30 in said well 28 accommodates a finger-piece 3| which forms as part ofthe actuator. RThis slot extends gen-1 erally longitudinally, substantially from the juncture of said hemispherical wall 28 and the side wall of the cylindrical body, where it provides a first stop 32, to a point slightly beyond the axis of the body where it provides a second stop 33. These stops limit the extent of movement of the actuator about its axis by engaging a finger-piece 3| on'said actuator 29.
This actuator, in the form illustrated, comprises a generally spherical element carrying said finger-piece 3| and seats against the aforementioned hemispherical wall 23 with the neck 3% of the finger-piecep'ositioned in the slot and the head 35 projecting beyond said slot. A flange 36 at one end of said head 35 provides'a notch 31 into which the first stop 32 snugly fits when the finger-piece is in position (Fig. 3) to permit closing of the valve under spring pressure. Thus, as is apparent, the actuator may be efiectively held against such movement as would open the valve. Shifting of this actuator to the other extreme position, or nearl 'so, completely disenthe discharge tubezi.
. It will also be observed that the internaldiam-Q 'eter of the cylindrical body 25 is substantially" the same as" the actuator. Thus, in assembling the parts, the actuator is passed through said body 25 and positioned as shown in Fig. 3. Preferably, polyethylene, or some material having like characteristics, is used in producing my dis pensing head, with the exception of the actuator which is formed of some comparatively hard moldable material, such as one of the phenolic resins.
Although I have shown the actuator as being substantially spherical, it is apparent that such shape may be other than spherical. Other modifications may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a valved dispensing head for a pressure type container, a cylindrical body having one end open, a valve actuator seat Within the other end of the body comprising a generally hemispherical wall provided with an arcuate slot, the ends of said slot providing a first stop substantially at the juncture of the seat and si e wall of the 300d? and a second stop positioned slightly to one side of the axis of said body, a valve actuator consisting of a generally spherical element engaging said sea-t, substantially L-.-sha-ped fingerpiececarried by said element and extending outwardly through the slot, a spring closed valve openable 'by bodily movement of the actuator axially of said cylindrical body when the finger-piece is spaced a predetermined distance from the first-named stop,
. and a discharge tube extending radially outward spring normally holding the valve seated, a valve actuator for opening theyalve consisting of an element arranged at one end of the valve stem and normally positioned to permit closing of said valve under influence of the spring, said actuator being mounted for movement in an arcuate path about an axis extending therethrough normal to the axis of said valve stem and also movable bodily at one end of the path toward and into engagement with said one end of the valve stem to openthe valve, and means for positively holding the actuator against said bodily movement when in position to permit closing of the valve.
4. In a pressure type container, a dispensing valve comprising a tube providing a discharge passageway through a Wall of the container and having a valve seat at its inner end, a valve, a stem for the valve extending through said tube, a spring normally holding the valve seated, a valve actuator for opening the valve consisting of an element arranged at one end of the valve stem and normally positioned to permit closing of said valve under influence of the spring, said actuator being mounted for movement about an axis extending therethrough normal to the axis of said valve stem to a second position remote from the first named position, said element when in the second position being free for bodily movement toward and into engagement with said one end of the valve st m o open said valve, a fi er-piece ERICH W. GRONEMEYER.
