Application February 26, 1951, Serial No. 212,823
1 Claim.
More specifically, it is an important object of s the invention to provide a collapsible drier in which the clothes line supports consist of a pair of elements hingedly connected to respective support arms extended at right angles to an upright post and slidable thereon, each support arm being provided with a sliding sleeve movable thereon in the direction of and away from the upright post, the sleeves having a pair of brace arms pivoted thereto, said arms also being pivotally connected to respective line supports at points spaced outwardly of the hinge of said clothes line supports to extend the hinged elements in end to end alignment in the erection of the drier and to move said clothes line supports to folded position when lowering said drier.
Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan View of the drier in raised position,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the drier in partially collapsed position, the clothes supporting lines having been omitted, for clarity.
Figure 4 is a cross section illustrating the sliding collar on the upright post of the drier, and
Figure 5 is an elevation of a hinge connection employed in the clothes line supports.
There is illustrated a collapsible clothes drier I comprising an upright post II which may be suitably anchored in the ground as indicated at I2.
Upon the post I I, a collar I3 is slidably mounted having a pair of opposed spaced ears It for pivotally mounting respective support arms I5. Each arm I is formed with an outwardly opening channel memberYIB for hingedly supporting one end of respective clothes line support elements I! and I8, the latter being formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings I9 through which lines may be threaded and secured. A sleeve 2I is slidable on each arm I5, the
A stop in 25 is provided in each arm I5, limiting the inward movement of the sleeveszi when the drier is in raised position.
The outer or freeends of the elements I'I an I 6 are supported by a respective cable 26 secured to an upper portion of the upright post I I, these cables also functioning to move the line supporting elements I1 and I8 when the drier is being collapsed.
To erect the drier, it is only necessary to exert an upward movement of the collar IS on the upright II, effecting movement of the arms 23 so as to extend the elements I? and i8 into endto end alignment, and in this position the sleeves ZI will engage the stop pins 25, and as may be seen in Figure 2, the collar I3 will have moved to a position above the horizontal plane of the line supporting elements I! and I 8 and is thus fully supported withoutthe need for additional securing means.
To lower the drier, the collar I 3 is moved downwardly upon the post I! effecting movement of the elements I 1 and I8 through arms 23 and sliding sleeves 2I, as best seen in Figure 3, until all parts have moved into a vertical position with I respect to the upright post II.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of the device, this is by way of illustration only, and I consider as my own all such modifications in construction as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A collapsible clothes drier comprising an upright post, a collar slidably mounted on said post and having pairs of ears positioned upon opposite sides thereof, a support arm pivotally mounted between th ears of each pair, said support arms each having an outwardly opening channel memher at the end thereof, a pair of clothes line supporting elements arranged in aligned relation within each of said channel members and pivotally connected thereto, a sleeve slidably mounted 3 on each of said support arms, brace rods pivot- References Cited in the file of this patent ally mounted to said sleeves and extended diagon- UNITED STATES PATENTS ally therefrom at opposite sides and pivotally connected to respective clothes line supporting Number Name Date elements at points spaced a substantial distance 5 215,283 May 13, 1379 outwardly of said open channel members, stop 236,168 Lavlgne 1381 means on said support arms for limiting sliding 326623 Caldwell 1835 movement of said sleeves, and cable members 348,882 Bolton et a1 sept- 1386' connected between an upper portion of said up- 2,334,513 Tulmbun 1943 2,459,110 Midouhas Jan. 11, 1949 right post and outer ends of said clothes line 10 V supporting elements.
