This invention relates in general to devices for treating the hair and, more particularly, to a hal ringlet holder. I v

Numerous types of womens coiifures incorporate in varying number ringlets or curls for enhancing the attractiveness of a particular hair style. For forming these ringlets it is necessary to maintain the hair by various holding means in ringlet formation for limited periods of time until the hair sets or dries, as the case may be,'after which such holding means as may have been employed may be removed. The most common methodof maintaining the ringlets in shape until setting is the use of bobby pins whereby the user must insert a plurality of such pins, usually more than three, in intersecting relationship upon the ringlet to assure appropriate clamping or gripping action. This procedure is tedious, involving several operations which perforce consume a substantial amount of time and consistently cause difiiculty.

Therefore, it is the primary object of the present invention to provide a hair ringlet holder which integrally incorporates means for tightly gripping the ringlet at a plurality of spaced points; and which may be applied to the ringlet in a single operation in minimum time and with maximum ease.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a hair ringlet holder integrally provided be economically manufactured; which is highly.

durable in usage; and which may be made highly ornamental in appearance.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring now by reference characters to the drawing, A designates a hair'ringlet holder comprising a central clamp or pin member I and a pair of companion clamp or pin members 2, 3, presented on opposite sides of the central clamp member I. Said clamp or pin members I, 2, 3, are each fabricated of a single length of, preferably die-cut, sheet material of substantial resiliency and are each bent back upon themselves to provide respectively a pair of opposed normally outer and inner legs or prongs 4,4, 5, 5', 6, 6'. 5', 5, 6, 6, of the companion clamp members 2, 3, are free at their end extremities remote from their associated loop '5 and are aligned, whereas the free end extremities of the leg 4 of the central clamp I terminates short of the end of the leg 4' and is turned outwardly at an angle to the plane of the leg 4 to define therewith a funnellike entrance construction 8 to the space between the legs 4, 4'. The free ends of the legs 5, 6, of the clamp members 2, 3, are pivotally secured in superimposed relation by a rivet 9 upon the outwardly presented face of the leg l of the clamp member 1 adjacent the out-turned end thereof, and similarly, the free ends of the legs 5, 6', of the members 2, 3, are pivotally secured as by a rivet 10 in superimposed relation on the outer surface of the leg 4' of the clamp member I, with' the rivets 9, ll], being axially aligned.

Thus, the companion clamp members 2, 3, may be independently swung about their pivot points toward and away from the central clamp member I in arc-defining paths. Since the various legs of the members I, 2, 3, are in immediate surface abutting relation at their point of mutual attachment, sufiicient friction is developed between the contacting surfaces so that the clamp members 2, 3, will each be substantially stable in any selected position with reference to the central clamp member I. It will therefore be seen that by the securement of the clamp members I, 2, 3, to each other the spaces between the respective legs thereof will be coincident in the vicinity of the point of mutual attachment so that relative movement of hair into the space between the legs of any one of the clamp members I, 2, 3, will effect facile entrance of the hair into the space between the legs of the other clamp members.

In usage, the clamp members 2, 3, may be preferably swung inwardly against the central clamp member I, and the legs 4, 4', of the said central clamp member I may be then pried apart or separated at the entrance 8 to allow the holder A to be slipped in poised-clamping position upon a ringlet of hair, which is held in shape by the users other hand. The funnel-shaped entrance 8 facilitates the separation of the legs 4, 4', as well as the disposition of the holder A upon the hair ringlet as it serves to avoid any unauthorized disturbing contact with, or pulling of, the hair during insertion of the holder A. After the holder A is in position on the ringlet, the legs 4, 4, will be released by the user to permit return thereof, through their inherent resiliency, to clamping relationship for tightly gripping the ringlet therebetween. With the central member I thus in position, the clamp members 2, 3, may then be swung away from the central memher I sufficient distances to grip the ringlet or curl at any desired spaced points for supporting the ringlet in its designed configuration. It is, of course, apparent that if the ringlet is of substantially small diameter, the clamp members 2, 3, would be swung through a shorter are from the central member I than if the ringlet has an increased diameter. The application of the holder A is accomplished by a single insertion and hence does not necessitate a plurality of inserting operations, as is currently required with bobby pins. Furthermore, with the legs 4, 4, in clamping position, the legs of the companion clamp members 2, 3, are automatically positioned on the ringlet so that they may be readily moved to the desired points of support. The procedure for removing the holder A after the ringlet has been fully formed is performed most effectively by reversing the steps for insertion. However, mere separation of the legs 4, 4, will allow the holder A to be removed without previous swinging of the companion clamp members 2, 3, since the separation of the legs 4, 4', will coincidentally effect a similar separation of the legs of the clamp members 2, 3, so that the holder A can be removed without disturbing the formed ringlet.

If desired, a modified form of ringlet holder A may be provided as shown in Figure 4 which comprises a central clamp member II and companion clamp members I2, I3, the latter being similar in all respects to the clamp members 2, 3, above described in connection with the ringlet holder A. The central clamp member II, is of the same size and configuration as the companion clamp members I2, I3, and is secured at its free end pivotally to the free ends of the clamp members I2, I3. Thus, the clamp member I I is not provided with extended leg portions as is the case of the clamp member I above described. Therefore, their modified structure would permit a conservation of metal in periods of metal shortage.

If desired, a further modified ringlet-holder B comprising a central clamp member I4 similar in all respects to the central clamp member I above described in connection with the ringlet holder A, and a pair of companion clamp members I5, I6, may be provided. The said clamp members I 5, I6, are integral since they may be formed from a single piece of metal b bent upon itself and cut to provide a V-shaped design, and are fixedly secured as by soldering to the legs of. the central clamp member I4 at the apex of the V and at a point spaced from the entrance-forming ends of the clamp member I4. It will thus be seen in this embodiment that the clamp members I4, I5,. I 6, have aligned points on their looped or folded ends whereas in the ringlet holder A above described the folded ends of the clamp members I, 2, 3, lie on an arc. The ringlet holder B is applied to the hair by separation of the legs of the central clamp member I4, which perforce causes a separation of the companion clamp members I5, I6, so that the ringlet may move relatively in a smooth manner within the spaces intermediate the legs of the clamp members I4, I5, I6. It is apparent that the holder B could be readily ornamented surfacewise or in other respects to provide an article of adornment which would be of considerable attractiveness.

If desired, a still further modified form of ringlet .holder B could be provided having companion clamp members II, I8, similar in all respects and details as the companion members I5, I6, described in connection with the ringlet holder B, and a central clamp member I9 being rigidly ailixed to the companion members I'I, I8, at the extremities of its legs. Thus, this embodiment differs from the ringlet holder B in that there are no extensions of the legs of the central clamp member I9 beyond the point of attachment to the companion clamp members I'I, I8.

While there are above disclosed but a limited number of embodiments of the structure and product of the invention herein presented, it is possible to produce still other embodiments with out departing from the inventive concept herein disclosed, and it is desired therefore that only such limitations be imposed on the appended claims as are stated therein, or required by the prior art.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device for fashioning hair ringlets by retentively holding same at three spaced points during the formative period comprising a main clamp member and two companion clamps members, each of said clamp members having opposed, normally inner and outer gripping legs connected 7 at corresponding ends by a resilient loop and being free at their opposite ends, the outer gripping legs of said companion clamp members being pivotally secured in superimposed relation to the outer leg of the main clamp member adjacent their free ends and the inner gripping legs of said companion clamp members being pivotally secured in superimposed relation to the inner gripping leg of the main clamp member adjacent their free ends, the gripping legs of the main clamp member extending beyond the point of attachment to the gripping legs of the companion clamp members, the extended portion of the gripping legs of the main clamp member being formed to provide a widened entrance to the space between the gripping legs.

2. A device for fashioning hair ringlets by retentively holding same at three spaced points during the formative period comprising a main clamp member and two companion clamp members, each of said clamp members having a pair of fiat opposed gripping legs in normally close relationship for defining a space therebetween the gripping legs of each pair being connected at corresponding ends by a resilient loop and being free at their opposite ends, the corresponding gripping legs of the companion clamp members being pivotally secured to each other and to the related gripping leg of the main clamp member adjacent the free ends of the companion clamp members for swingable movement with relation to each other whereby the spaces intermediate each set of legs is coincidental in the region of securement of the legs, the gripping legs of the main clamp member extending beyond the point of attachment to the gripping legs of the companion clamp members, the extended portion of the gripping legs of the main clamp member being formed to provide a widened entrance to the space between the gripping legs.

3. A device for fashioning hair ringlets by retentively holding same at three spaced points during the formative period comprising a central and two lateral clamp members, each of said clamp members having a pair of normally inner and outer fiat, opposed gripping legs connected at corresponding ends by a bulge-forming resilient loop, the legs of each pair being immediately proximate adjacent the loop and thence diverging outwardly toward their opposite, free ends to define a space therebetween, the inner and outer legs of the lateral clamp members being respectively secured adjacent their free ends in superimposed relation to the corresponding legs of the central clamp member for pivotal movement whereby said lateral clamp members may be swung for selective spacing from said central clamp member in order to provide appropriate retention of ringlets of varying size, said lateral clamp members being so secured as to present their loop ends spacedly from the loop end of the central clamp member and on opposite sides thereof.

4. A device as described in claim 3 wherein the end surfaces of the loops of said clamp members define an arc.
