p ns w g y ApplicationAugust 1, 1950, Serial No.176,972'
In Great Britain September 17, 1949 2 Claims. (o1; iii-67 Key locked slidable bolt fastenings for travel goods to which the invention relates comprise a co-operative bolt member and hasp member, and the invention lies in the construction and operation of the bolt member adapted for being key locked.
There are two well known types of key locked bolt members, the one a button type in which the key application is through the casing away from the button, and the other a nozzle type in which the key application is through the nozzle, and the invention relates only to the button type. a
Travel goods fitted with such bolt members are exposed to all kinds of weather and rough usage and it frequently happens that, in consequence,
the action of the bolt spring becomes jammed or inoperative by breakage or disconnection.
The invention provides a button type of key locked bolt member by a combination of parts having for its essential features a ring-like bolt shooting and locking member provided internally with key stumps and externally with a bolt shooting and locking nose and stop shoulders, which engage a seating in the back plate of the casing for anchorage and which member is adapted for part revolution only within the seating by key operation of the ring-like member to shoot and lock simultaneously the bolt if in any way fixed or held in retracted position. The bolt and the button slide together, but the key peg and the ring-like member do not slide, the member only 43d, the features of said back plate 4| being that it has as parts of it a circular seating Me and a central key peg Md and also a rigid stop lug Me. 'The ring boss 43b fits rotatably the seating Me which is of a depth sufficient to rotatably anchor the locking member 43 to the casing to revolve about the stop lug 4le.
The slidable bolt 42 is dished by a boundary flange 42a and has a central and forward abutpartly revolving within the seating of the back 7 plate of the casing and the key peg being stationery with the casing.
The combination of parts hereinafter partic ularly stated in the following claims and clearly described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawing includes other features connected with the slidable bolt and its spring whereby the action of the various movable and immovable parts are arranged to operate upon a medial line longitudinal of the bolt member.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a front View of the bolt member.
Fig. 2 shows the parts separated and in longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is the bolt and its spring, separately.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the bolt-shooting andlocking member, separately. v
Fig. 5 shows the back plate of the casing, separately. b
Fig. 6 shows the front plate of the casing, separately.
The key application is through the casing away ment lug 42c andthe spring 44 of the bolt 42, which'also operates against the locking member 43, is safely located between the flanging 42a and the abutment lug 42c. Said bolt also has a clearance opening 42d and attachment openings 420 through its side walls, the one opening for ing and locking abutment if the action of the bolt spring 44 is inoperative for any reason.
Instead of a circular seating in the back plate 4| a hole in a separate plate contained in the box formation of the back plate may be substituted as an anchorage to the casing for the ring-like revoluble bolt shooting and locking member 43.
It will be appreciated that the abutment lug 42c and the revoluble ring-like member 43 are disposed on a medial line longitudinally of the fastener.
Only a key can lock and unlock the fastener,
but the key can shoot and lock the bolt simultaneously if the spring breaks or the action of the bolt becomes rusted up or normally inoperative.
What I claim is: 1. A button type bolt fastening of the kind described, comprising a casing consisting of front and back plates rigidly connected, said front plate having a key opening and a hasp opening and said back plate having a stationary key peg, a
circular Seating concentric with said peg and a rear stop lug at the boundary of said seating, a bolt slidable within said casing, a button slidably mounted on the face of said casing and connected to said bolt through openings in said face, said bolt having a boundary flange and a central, forward abutment lug and being formed with a clearance opening for the passage of a key to engage said key peg, a spring carried by said bolt and disposed between; said boundary flange and said abutment lu a rotary key operated with stops to co-operate with said stop lug on said back plate to limit the revolution of said locking member in its locking and unlocking positions.
2. Fastening according to claim 1, and in which the said abutment lug on said bolt, said locking member and said stop lug are arranged on a medial line extending longitudinally of the fastening.
