1 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pocket structure for attachment to a nurses uniform.
More specifically, the present invention proproses the construction of an improved pocket structure of the type disclosed which is constructed to include a main outer wall which when secured to the front of the uniform cornbines with the material of the uniform to provide a large main pocket for receiving pads, papers, handkerchiefs and similar articles and which has vertically extended minor pockets along its side edges for pens, scissors and similar elongated articles common to the nursing profession.
Still further, the present invention proposes the provision of an inner wall which is co-extensive with the main outer wall at the top thereof and positioned to the rear of the minor pockets to function as a guide `and for retaining articles placed within the large main pocket from slipping into position between the main outer wall and the minor pockets.
As a further object, the present invention proposes constructing a pocket structure of the type disclosed which is fashioned of six pieces joined together in such a manner that none of the joining stitches are visible from the outside ofthe pocket structure with the exception of those stitches which mount the main outer wall in position on the uniform.
Another object of the present invention proposes arranging the minor pockets to have mouth openings above the top edge of the main outer wall backed by upward extensions of their rear walls and the rear wall which is co-extensive with the top portion of the main outer wall to guide the articles being inserted into the minor pockets.
It is a further object of the present invention to construct a pocket structure which is simple and durable, which can be quickly and easily mounted in position on a nurses uniform and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
On the accompanying drawings forming a material part ofthe present inclosure:

Fig. 15 is a developed view showing a further step in the assembly of the pocket structure.
The pocket structure, according to the present invention, is constructed entirely of cloth material and is to be stitched to the front of a nurses uniform 20 at the usual location for a pcket. On the drawings, the uniform is only fragmentarily shown. Y
The pocket structure is constructed to include a main outer wall 2l which is shaped, as best shown in Fig. 8, to have its top corners cut off diagonally to provide downwardly and outwardly sloped top edge portions 22 and 2,3. Between the inner ends of the downwardly and outwardly sloped top edge portions 22 and 23, the main outer wall 2| has a reentrantly arranged V- shaped top edge portion 24. The side edges 25 and 26 of the main outer wall 2| are sloped or converged downward to a at horizontal bottom edge 27.
When the pocket structure is stitched to the uniform 29, as will be hereinafter described, the main outer wall 2| combines with the material of the uniform to provide a large main pocket 28 to receive a note pad, handkerchief and similar articles. In Fig. 1, a note pad 29 is shown in position within the main large pocket 29.
Extended vertically along the side edges and 2B of the main outer wall 2|, there are minor pockets 39 and 3|. The minor pocket 39 is provided for receiving a fountain pen 32 and the minor pocket is provided for receiving a pair of scissors 33, see Fig. 1.
Located behind the minor pockets -39 and 3| and co-extensive with the top portion of the main outer wall 2|, there is an inner wall 34, the shape of which is best shown in Fig. 13.A VThe inner walll 34 is conformed to the shape ofthe top portion of the main outer wall 2| except that the top corners of the inner Wall fare not cut away. Thus, the inner wall 34 has a reentrantly extended V- shaped YYtop edge 35 matching the formation of the V-shaped top edge portion 24 ofthe main outer wall. The ends of the `V-shaped top edge 35 Acontinue into downwardly converged side edges 36 and 31 matching the convergence of the side edges 25 and 2S of the main outer wall 2|. The inner wall 34 has a straight bottom edge 38 spaced some distance above the bottom edge 21 of the main outer wall 2|.k The bottom edge 38 of the inner wall 34 can be finished with a seam to prevent unravelling, if desired.
When the inner wall 34 is properly positioned behind the main outer wall 2|, the top corners of the inner wall will extend upward above the downwardly and outwardly sloped top edge portions 22 and 23 of the main outer wall. For guiding proper aligning of the walls 2| and 34, the side edges 25 and 29 of the main outer wall 2| are formed with notches 25EL and 29a which are to be aligned with complementary notches 33a and 37@ formed in the vertical side edges 35 and 31 of the inner wall 34.
The minor pocket 39 for the fountain pen 32 is constructed of a -front Wall 39 and la rear wall 49. The front wallr39 and the rear wall 49 are alike in configuration except for the formation of their top edges. The front wall 39 has a top edge 4| matching -the formation of the downwardly sand outwardly sloped top edge portion 22 and the adjacent end or" the V-shaped top edge portion 24 of the main outer wall 2|. The rear wall 49 has a top edge 42 which is sloped downward and inwardmatching the slope of the adjacent end of the V-'shaped top edge 35 of the inner wall 34. The outer ends of the top edges 4| rand 42 of the walls 39 and 49 continue into downwardly and inwardly sloped outer side edges 43 and 44 matching kthe slope of the adjacent side edges 25 and 36 of the walls 2| and 34. The outer side edges 43 and 44 are formed with notches 434 and 44a, respectively, for insuring the proper alignment of thefwalls 39 and 49 and the proper alignment of the minor pocket 39 with the walls 2| and 34. The walls 39 and 49 of the minor pocket 39 have straight inner side edges 45 and 46 and straight horizontal bottom edges 41 and 48. The straight inner side edges 45 and 46 and the straight horizontal bottom edges 47 and 48 of the front and rear. walls of the minor pocket 30 are secured together by a line of stitches 49. From Figs. 1, 2 and 15, it will be noted that when the minor pocket 39 is mounted in position, the Walls 39 and .4 49 thereof are longer than the inner Wall 34 but shorter than the main outer wall 2|.
The minor pocket 3| which receives the scissors 33 is also constructed of a front wall 59 and a rear wall 5|, the shapes of which are best shown in Figs. 11 and 12. The walls 59 and 5| are of different lengths. The front wall 59 has a top edge 52 cut to match the formation of the downwardly and outwardlysloped top edge portion 23 and the adjacent end of the V-shaped top edge portion 24 of the front wall 2|. At its outer or low end, the top edge 52 continues into a downwardly and inwardly sloped outer side edge 53 which matches the slope of the outer side edge Zlof Athe main front wall 2|. At its inner end, the top edge 52 Vof the front wall 59 continues into a straight inner side edge 54. The bottom endsl of the side edges 53 and 54 are joined by a straight horizontal bottom edge 55. From Fig. 15, it will be noted that the front wall 59 of the minor pocket 33` is just slightly longer than the walls 39 and 49.
The rear wall 5| of the minor pocket 33 is of a length corresponding to the length of the main outer wall 2 That rear wall 5| has a downwardly and inwardly sloped top edge 56 matching the slope of the adjacent end of the V-shaped top edge 35 of the inner wall 34. outer end, the top edge 59 continues into an inwardly sloped outer side edge 57 which matches the inclination of the outer side edge 26 of the main outer wall 2 the outer side edge 31 of the inner wall-34 and the outer side edge 53 of the front wall 59 of the minor' pocket 33. At its low or inner end, the top edge 59 continues into a straight inner side edge 53 complementary to the inner side edge 54 of the front wall 59. Extended outward from the inner side edge 58, there is a straight horizontal bottom edge portion 59 complementary to thestraight bottom edge 27 of the main outer wall 2|. The outer side edge 5l and the horizontal bottom edge portion 59 are joined by an inclined bottom edge portion 99 arranged at an inclination to the horizontal bottom edge portion 59.
To insure proper matching of the front wall 59 and the rear wall 5i to form the minor pocket 33, the outer side edges 53 and 5'! of those walls are formed respectively with notches 53a and 53a. lWith the notches'53a and 57a aligned, the inner side edge 54 of the front wall 59 and the aligned portion of the inner sidev edge 53 of the rear wall 5| are joined by a vertically extended .line of stitches 9 To understand the inannerof assembling the six pieces just described to form the pocket structure of the present invention, reference will new be had to Figs. 14 and l5, To start the assembly, the main outer wall 2| is first rested down on a flat surface with its outer face facing upward. Next, the front wall 39 of the minor pocket 39 is rested on the main outer wall 2| with its outer side edge 43 flush with the side edge 25 of the main outer wall and with the notches 43a and 25a in alignment. The tcp edge 4| of the front wall 33 is then stitched to the downwardly and outwardly slope top edge portion 22 and the adjacent end of the V-shaped top edge portion 24 of the main outer wall 2| by a line of stitches 32. Then the front wall 59 of the minor pocket 3| is placed on the main outer wall 2| with its outer side edge 53 ush with the'side edge 36 of the main outer wall 2| and withthe notches '53L and 294 in alignment. The top`edge52 of the front wall 59 isthen secured to the downwardly and At its high or' aecomo outwardly sloped top edgeportion 23 andv fthe adjacent end of the V-shaped `top edge portion 2li of the main outer -wall 22| -bya line of'sti-tches 63. The main outer wall 2| -and the :front walls 39 and 5i), will then appear as show-n in F-ig.y14.
The walls 39 and 5l! are then swung over the top of the main outer wall -2| 4to depend along the inner face thereof and -to cause the :seams formed by the lines of stitches to Acome'between the 'adjacent .faces of the wall `2| and 4the walls 39 and 5t, see Figs. '3 and 4.
The .next step in assembly is -to lay the main outer wall 2i down fiat so that .the walls .39 and 5l) are exposed uppermost. Then the rear Wall itl of the minor pocket 4Till lis positioned `on the front wall 39 of that minor pocketso that the notches 3a and M of the outer side Aedges -43 and IM are aligned, see Fig. l15. The rinner side edges d'5 and it and the bottom edges lll and 4'8 are then joined by the line of stitches HB. Similarly, the rear wall 5i of the minor pocket 3| is positioned on the front 'wall 5'0 thereof with the notches 53e and Bla' of the outer sideedges iii-lI respective front walls '39 and 5B, the assembiy of the pocket structure is then completed by laying the inner wall 3d on a 'fiat surface with its outer face faced downward. The main outer wall `2l with the attached minor pockets '3U `and J3| .is then positioned on top of the inner wall .31| with the outer face of the main outer wall .facing down? ward and resting on the inner wall and with the minor pockets and 3| on top o'f the main outer wall, as shown in Fig. 1`5. At the one side, the notches e, 25e, 43a and 44a are -brought vinto perfect alignment and at the other side, the notches Sla ,26s, 53a and 57a are brought vinto 4perfect alignment. rIhe parts are then joined together by one continuous line of stitches B4 which extends from the top end of the 'inclined bottom edge portion 6G of the rear wall 5| of the minor pocket 3| upward along the right side of fthe structure, as viewed in Fig. 15, completely across the top thereof and then downward along fthe left side to the stitches 'Q9 along the bottom end of the minor pocket 3'0. In extending across the top of the structure, it will be noted that the stitches 6ft follow 'the V-shaped ltop edge portion Sii of the inner wall 34 and the aligned top edges 42 and te of the rear walls 4|] and 5|, respectively, of the minor pockets 30 and 3l. YFollowing the stitching dit, the inner wall Y3l! is then swung over the top of the main front wall 2| to depend downward along the rear faces of the rear walls and El of the minor pockets 3U and 3|, seeFig. 2 where the assembled 'pocket structure is illustrated as viewed from 'the rear and prior to attachment to the uniform 2li.
To mount the pocket structure on the uniform 26., the side ledges 'thereof beneath the bottom edge 3S of the inner wall 31| arebent inward along the lines 65 and 66 and .the bottom edge 2.1. of the outer wall '2| and the bottom edge portion 59 of the rear wall 5| of the minor pocket 3| are bent upward along the line 61 see Fig. 2. The pocket structure is then positioned against the uniform 2G at the desired location and stitched `i-n position by a continuous line of stiches 68 extended completely along the outer side edges and the bottom edge of the pocket struct-ure.
6 `From Fig. '4it wil be noted that the .line 4of stitches 68 where they vextend ralong the :bottom of the pocket structure valso rsecure the bottom edge portion 59of the rear wall 5| of the minor pocket. 3| in position. The vinclined .bottom edge portion 60 is provided to relieve the :bulk-mess of thejmaterial vin lthe -lower vleft-hand Icorner of :the pocket structure as -viewed in Fig. l. The 'minor pocket 3U is closed completely along its inner and bottom edges and is positioned on the 4pocket structure so that the top end ofthe fountain pen 32 inserted thereinto will project slightly from the top of that minor vpocket so that a grip may be had thereon for removing the pen when de* sired. On the other hand, the minor pocket `t!! opens to the intterior of the main large -pocketl below the bottom edge V'55 lof the .front wall 50 'of that pocket and along the lbottom portion of the inner side edge -58 of that pocket Aand below the line of stitches 6|. That opening is provided so that curved tip ends of certain surgical scissors can be projected into the large vmain pocket #2-8 at the bottom Yof the minor ,pocket -3 thus accommodating `such scissors without vundue strain on the seams ofthe minor pocket 3 `Referring to the left sideof Figs. .1 and 4, it will be noted that stitches 6ta are extended finward fromthe adjacent top end of 'the line ofA stitches t8 securing the top edge 56 of the rear wall 5| of the .minor pocket -3| and the adjacent end portion of the V-shaped top edge 35 of the inner wall 34 to the uniform V20. Those stitches 68a Aextend inward to the junction of the downwardly and outwardly Asloped top edge portion 23 with the adjacent end of the V-shaped top edge portion 24 of the front wall 2 lf. While the stitches 68a reduce the width of the mouth 'opening to the large main ,pocket28 they do provide additional support for the minor pocket 3| wh'ich'mustV cari-y the heavy surgical'scissors.
From the foregoing description, it will vbe vapparent that the present invention proposes a novel pocket structure for attachment to fnurses uniforms comprised of lsix simple cloth pieces and joined together and to the uniform insuch a way that'no stitchesshow with'the exception of those which mount the pocket structure in position onl is reserved to all changes and 'modifications coming lwithin the 'scope 'of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
