CANCEISING AND DATING DEVICE: John H. Koifski, Chisholm, Minn. Application October 26, 19:49,; SeriaItNo. 122,561:
2 Claims. (01.. 101-329) This invention relates to. cancelling and dating devices, and more particularly to a. hand operated roller stamp for cancelling postage stamps and the/like.
An object of this invention is to provide a roller stamp for cancelling postage stamps by the printing of" date marks and other indicia thereon which has convenient means for readily emplacing interchangeable type thereim A further object of the invention is to provide a cancelling and dating device which will carry its own inking supply.
These, together with the various ancillary objects of the invention which will become ap-' parent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this cancelling and dating device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the cancelling and dating device;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view as taken along line 33 in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an exploded view showing the various elements of the printing means included in the present invention;
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view as taken along line 5--5 in Figure 3.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, It] generally indicates the cancelling and dating device comprising the present invention. This roller stamp includes a substantially U-shaped frame having an upper central portion I2 with a pair of substantially parallel legs l4 and I6 secured thereto by welding or other convenient means.
Each of the legs l4 and I6 are provided with a substantially U-shaped aperture I8. The pin 26 having an enlarged head 22 and an aperture in its tail end for reception of a cotter pin 24 or like;
stop means that is inserted through the apertures I8 in the legs I4 and I6. Surrounding the pin '26 is a sleeve 26 to which is secured a pair of coil springs 28 which urge the sleeve 26 and thusly the pin 26 toward the top central portion l2.
Connected to the pin are a pair of parallelly extending arms 30 and 32 which are provided with substantially L-shaped slots 34 at the free end for reception of the headed portions 36 of shaft 38 which is rounded and tapered adjacent one end as at 39. Each of the legs l4 and I6 are provided with corresponding L-shaped slots 46 for 2. selective reception: of the-head. 3,6 of the shaft 38., which hasiflange- 4t secured at, itsother end,
The: hollow cylinder 4.2. having a; plurality of annularly spaced). slots; 44 open atone endiof the cylinder: and having; dovetaile. retaining shoulders as at 46 is secured. upon the. shaft 38.. Aplu-rality of type members, 48, of such. shape as to be adapted to fit snugly within the. apertures 44 and havin a coneave'inner. surface 56.- with, printing bers to hold them rigidly and firmly in place.
Journalled between the legs l4 and I6 is another shaft 54 having an inking roller 56 secured thereto.
When the cancelling and dating device is in the operating position as is shown by solid lines in Figure 2, the springs 28 pull the pin 20 and consequently the arms 30 and 32 upwards forcing the shaft 38, more particularly the headed portion 36 to engagement with the upper portions of the L-shaped slots 46 in the legs [4 and [6. At the same time, the legs of the shaft 36 are forced downward to the reverse L-shaped slots 34 in the arms 30 and 32 so as to be securely engaged therein. To use the device, the operator need but apply pressure tangentially of the cylinder 42 so as to cause it to rotate. The letters 52 of the type 48 touch the inking roller 56 and are provided with a suitable coating of ink which they then apply on the article to be marked. The tangential force is easily applied through the wooden handle 58 which is secured to the central portion [2 by means of screw 66. In order to enhance the appearance of the device a collar 62 of suitable design is secured between the handle 58 and the central portion l2.
When it is desired to change the marks of indicia retained within the slots 44 of the cylinder 42, the headed portion 36 of the shaft 38 are merely pulled downwardly and outwardly through shaft 40 to the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 2. Then the entire shaft and cylinder may be lifted out from the arms 36, the shaft may beremoved from the cylinder 42 allowing the type members 38 to fall free. Other type members as desired may be substituted, the shaft replaced in the cylinder 42, the heads of the shafts locked in the L-shaped slots 34 and the shaft rotated back to the position as shown by solid lines in Figure 2. Obviously, the shaft 26 is rotated throughout the length of the arcuate slot 3 l8 to the positions shown by the dotted and solid lines in Figure 2.
Since from the foregoing, the construction and advantages of this cancelling and dating device are clearly apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to which lie within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A cancelling and dating device comprising a substantially U-shaped frame including a web and spaced parallel flanges extending from said web, said flanges having aligned arcuate shaped slots havingvertically elongated sections in their central portions adjacent the web, said flanges having further, aligned open end bayonet slots in their side edges adjacent their free ends, said bayonet slots terminating in vertical alignment with the vertical elongated sections of said arouate shaped slots, a pin rotatably mounted in and extending between said arcuate shaped slots, a pair of parallel arms mounted on'said pin, a shaft secured to and extending between the free ends of said arms, printing means journaled on said shaft, the ends of said shaft being seated in said bayonet slots and spring means between said web and said pin to yieldingly urge said pin into the elongated sections of said arcuate-shaped slots and thus urge said shaft into seating engagement in said bayonet slots.
2. The combination of claim 1 including a second shaft mounted on said flanges between said pin and said first mentioned shaft and being or!- set therefrom, and an ink roller journaled on said second shaft, said spring means urging said printing means into engagement with said ink roller.
