, 1 Claim. (01. 24s- 44) This invention relates to Christmas tree stands or holders, the primary object of the invention being to provide a stand or holder embodying separable sections held together by an adjustable clamp, the clamp being so constructed and arranged that it will at the same time support the Christmas tree in an upright position, by clamping the Christmas tree to the stand.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a Christmas tree stand of this character which will support a Christmas tree in such a way that a pan containing water, may be positioned thereunder, in which the front end of the Christmas tree may rest, supplying the Christmas tree with moisture to condition the tree against drying rapidly, to cause the needles thereof to fall from the tree.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable clamp, so that the holder may be used in supporting trees of various diameters.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a Christmas tree stand which when dismantled, is capable of being arranged to provide a small and compact article to facilitate storing, when not in use as a Christmas tree stand.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is an elevational view, illustrating a Christmas tree stand or holder, constructed in accordance with the invention, one of the sections of the holder being shown in cross section.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder positioned over a pan containing water in which the butt end of the tree is disposed.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the Christmas tree stand or holder, comprises a pair of sections and 6, which sections have one of their respective edges cut away as at I providing a clearance, so that when the sections are assembled in a position to support a Christmas tree, the stand may be positioned over a pan, such as indicated at 8, in which Water may be maintained to supply the necessary moisture to the tree supported by the stand to prevent the tree from drying out prematurely.

As shown, the section 5 is provided with a notch extending upwardly from its lower edge,

the notch being disposed at a point spaced from a vertical line drawn through the center of the section 5.- The section 6 is also formed with a notch that extends inwardly from the upper edge thereof, the notch being indicated by the numera1 9, the sections being fitted together by interengaging the notched portions, as clearly shown by the drawing.

The section 5 is provided with an opening [0 formed therein, and this opening is designed to receive the offset end ll of the clamping arm l2, which clamping arm is of a length to extend to a point adjacent to the point of crossing between the sections 5 and 6, the free end of the clamp being extended slightly outwardly as at l3.

The clamp is constructed preferably of a length of metal, and is provided with a rectangular opening I 4 through which the rectangular shank l5 extends, the construction of the shank and opening being such as to prevent rotation of the shank IS with respect to the clamp. The shank I5 is formed with a threaded end that passes through the opening l6 formed in the section 5, where a nut I1 is provided which is threaded on the shank to adjust the shank within the opening. The reference character l8 indicates the lever forming a part of the shank, which is formed with cam surfaces I9 that engage the clamp I2 when the lever is swung downwardly to the osition as shown by Fig. 2, forcing the clamp into contact with the tree positioned between the sections 5 and 6 of the stand, forcing the tree into the space adjacent to the point of connection between the sections 5 and 6 to not only support the tree in an upright position, but at the same time set up a binding action between the sections 5 and 6 to hold them together and provide a rigid structure.

By adjusting the nut H, the bolt or shank l5 may be adjusted so that the clamp may be used in clamping tree trunks of various diameters in such a Way as to secure them in an upright position.

From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a Christmas tree stand which may be readily and easily positioned by persons unfamiliar with mechanics, and when a. Christmas tree is placed therein and clamped. by the device it not only holds the sections of the stand together, but insures the tree supported by the stand, being held in an upright position.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A tree stand for supporting a tree over a water receptacle, comprising a pair of wide sections arranged with their side faces disposed vertically, said sections having their lower edges cut away, providing a clearance for a receptacle positioned thereunder, said sections crossing each other and being disposed at right angles with respect to each other, said sections having slots extending inwardly from one of the longitudinal edges thereof, said sections being interlocked through the slots, holding said stand in an upright position, a clamp embodying a horizontally disposed lever pivot-ally mounted on one of the sections, said lever having a cam surface at one end thereof, an arm comprising a length of metal forming a part of the clamp, said arm having an opening, a bolt connected with the section supporting the arm, said bolt extending through the opening of said arm and to which said lever is pivotally connected, one end of said arm being offset and resting in an opening of one of the sections, the other end of said arm engaging :5: tree trunk po tio e twe n the adj cent sec ions in contact with the sections, and the cam of said lever being movable over said arm moving the arm to clamp said tree to the holder.
