standard helmet and a range of headbands.
According to the invention, a helmet comprises an outer shell and automatically adjustable means for supporting headbands of different sizes.
The means for supporting the headband advantageously consist of a plurality of strips of a resilient material that are secured to the outer shell at one end and at their other end are provided with means for detachably connecting them to the outer face of the headband. Suitable connecting means consist of press-stud fasteners, one part of the fasteners being secured to the end of the strips and the other part to the outer face of the headband. With he largest size of headband, the strips will lie close between the headband and the outer shell, while as the size of the headband decreases, the strips will move increasingly inward of the shell at their outer ends when connected to the headband.
The supporting strips or other supporting means need not beconnected directly to the outer shell but to the inner frame which is often provided in such helmets, particularly where the helmet does not conform in shape to the contour of the head.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the inside of the helmet with the headband removed,
Figure 2 shows the headband, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the inside of the helmet with the headband in posi-- tion.
Six resilient strips l9 are mounted inside the crown ll of the helmet adjacent the rim l2. The strips Ill are secured at one end to the crown by means of rivets l3 and the ends of the strips carry fabric strips M which are connected at their other ends to form an inner frame within the crown. At their free ends, the strips l9 carry the socket portions l5 of press stud fasteners, the stud portions N5 of the fasteners being secured to the outer face of the headband IT.
The headband is mounted in position by engaging the press stud fasteners, the resilient strips I0 automatically adjusting themselves to the size of the headband.
I claim:
1. A helmet comprisingan outer shell, 2. plurality of elongated resilient strips located within the shell, each of said strips having an end secured. to the shell and a free end, and extending circumferentially and uni-directionally around the shell, and said strips together covering approximately the whole of the circumference of the shell, a head-band located within the shell, and means for detachably connecting the free ends of said strips to the head-band.
2. A helmet according to claim 1, wherein said connecting means consist of press-stud fasteners, one part of the fasteners being secured to the ends of the strips and the other part to the outer face of the headband.
THOMAS TRAILL MACLEAN.
