T. 0. POTTER.
BUGKLE.
Nd. 263,807. Patented sept. 5, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS O. POTTER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,807, dated September 5, 1882.
' Application filed J une 29, 1882. (No model.)
To alt whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS O. POTTER, of Boston, in the county ot Suffolk and State ot' Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, haveinventedanew and usel'ullinprovementin Buckles, ot' which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in explaining its nature, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion ot a pair of Suspenders with the buckles thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line :c x of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one end of the blankfronn which the buckle is formed, and Fig. 4 represents a moditied form of construction.
IThis invention consists in providing the pivot ends of a buckle-tongue with a double bearing, whereby the buckle-back may be made of thinner metal than is now employed and still a sufficient bearing for the tongue be provided, because double the thickness of metal is utilized in forming the bearing.
Referring to the drawings, a is the tongue or jaw; a', the pivot ends thereof; b, the blank for the buckle back or frame. This back or frame has the wings c and the ears c', which form a part of the blank, and which are bent upward at right angles thereto and on line with the wings. Both the portions c and the` parts c have the bearing-holes d for the pivot ends of the tongue, and the pivot ends of course are made long enough to pass through the iuner bearing and into the outerbearing, but not necessarily beyond the outer bearing.` lf, however, it is so desired, the outer bearing may be extended outwardly by forming therein a socket which shall be ot' the sauie size as the remainder of the bearing. This construction is shown in Fig. 2. The two bearings, wings, or projections may be closedtogether, as shown in Fig. 2, or they may be separated, yas shown in Fig. ,4.
The advantages of this invention consist principally in the providing of two bearings for each pivot end of the tongue, and in the eheapness of manufacture, which arises from the ability to use thinner metal than has heretofore been employed, while at the same time a'stronger construction is obtained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 'of the United States 1. A buckle having double bearings d for the pivot ends a of the buckle tongue or jaw.
2. The combination, in a buckle, ot' the projections c and win gs c, formed from the buckleblank, as described, and provided with the bearing-holes d, with the tongue or jaw a, having pivots a', all substantially as and for the purposes described.
THOMAS O. POTTER. Witnesses:
