UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA EMMERT, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,775, dated September 5, 1882. Application filed February 6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA Hammer, :1. citizen of the United States, residing at Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to fire-escapes, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the fire-escape as applied. Fig. 2 is a section, and Fig. 3 is a'modification.
A is, a flexible rubber disk, and is made pret erably oval in shape, as shown. Its lower side is constructed with projecting lugs a a, by which a groove, a, is formed between them, extending the length of the disk, as shown. To the back of the disk is attached a strap, (1 by which it is secured to the band.
B is a band buckled to the strap M, as shown, and attached to a strap, b, buckled around the wrist, asshown. In operation the hand is inserted under the strap a and the disk grasped. The rope G is then placed in the groove a and the descent commenced. The speed is regulated by the amount of pressure exerted by the hand upon the edges of thedisk, which operates to increase the pressure of the lugs a (4 upon the rope and to cause a consequent decrease in the speed.
I do not confine myself to the construction of a disk with the lugs a a, but provide that a flexible disk tapering toward each side and with a central groove, as shown in Fig. 3, may be used, if desired.
What I claim is- 1. A fire-escape consisting of a flexible rubber disk formed with lugs a a, grooves a, and provided with a strap, 0?, in combination with arope, arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
2. In a fireescape, the combination of the disk A, formed with lugs a a, groove to, and provided with a strap, M, with the strap B and wrist-strap b, all arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EZRA EMMERT.
