INVENTOR. WM
A. C. FREY GARBAGE CAN SAFETY LOCK Flled Sept 11 1951 April 28, 1953 Patented Apr. 28, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARBAGE CAN SAFETY LOCK Andrew C. Frey, Jackson, Mich.
Application September 11, 1951, Serial No. 246,037
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to a garbage can safety lock and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements or" parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a garbage can safety lock which may be quickly and easily attached to the conventional garbage can to thereby maintain the cover thereof upon such can despite the manipulations of dogs, cats or the weather.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and ellicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel garbage can lock having simple means for attaching and detaching the same from a conventional garbage can.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the follow ing specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the invention shown attached to a conventional garbage can,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a safety hoolt forming a part of the invention,
Figure 3 is an exploded elevational view of a spring forming part of the invention, and
Figure 4 is an elevational View of a permanent fastening device which forms a part of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a device of the character set forth which consists of a permanent fastening member generally indicated at it and which is substantially triangular in form and which is formed of a single piece oi wire whose free ends form a gap H in the one side of the triangular structure, the free ends being indicated at l2.
To the apex portion of the fastener ill there is connected one end of a tension spring It the other end being connected to an eye it of a safety lock generally indicated at 15. The lock (5 is formed of a single piece of wire having the eye it at one end and a hook I 6 at the other end while midway of the lock it there is provided an integrally formed outwardly extending handle l1.
There is also illustrated in Figure l of the drawing a garbage can It provided with a bail It mounted in conventional bail ears 2%. A cover 221 is provided for the can it and has centrally mounted atop thereof a handle it.
In operation two of the devices forming the present invention are utilized and each is at- 2 tached to the garbage can by extending the member it through the handle 22 and thereafter bringing the ends it of the member it together beneath the handle 22 to securely hold the same upon such handle. The spring l3 interconnects the member it and the lock ill by being engaged with the eye it of the loci: It. The hook it of the lock structure it extends beneath the ends of the bail is adjacent the bail cars :26 and it will be apparent that when it is desired to engage or disengage the hook it from its respective portion of the bail it, it is only necessary to manipulate the handle ll thereof either upwardly or downwardly to engage or disengage the hook it as aforesaid. When the devices are mounted upon the garbage can structure as illustrated in Figure 1, it will be seen that the springs act to securely maintain the cover it upon the can it to thus foil the attempts of dogs, cats and other animals or the actions of the weather to remove the cover 25 from such can it.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety device for garbage cans and the like comprising in combination with a garbage can provided with a cover, a handle centrally affixed to said cover, a pair of bail ears disposed at opposite sides of said can near the top edge thereof and a bail adapted to engage in said cars, a pair of complementary fastening mem: bers triangular in form and having a gap in one side thereof, said members adapted to removably engage with said handle by means of said gap and having the apex opposite the said gap positioned outwardly, a pair of safety locks having their end portions bent downwardly in hooklike form and an integrally formed outwardly extending handle portion midway of the length thereof, means for connecting the said fastening members with the said lock means, and means for connecting said lock means with said bail.
2. A safety device for garbage cans or the like as described in the foregoing claim 1, wherein said means for connecting the said fastening means with the said lock means comprises a complementary pair of yieldable members each adapted to have one thereof removably attached to the apex of said fastening member and th opposite end removably attached to the upper end of said locking member, and the free end of the said locking member removably at- Number tached in the eye of the said bail end. 1,488,700 ANDREW C.
