April 28, 1953 H. DINSTMAN WATCHCASE WITH COVER Filed Feb. 15, 1951 IN V EN TOR. HXMAN Dms'r MA N Patented Apr. 28, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WATCHCASE WITH COVER Hyman Dinstman, New York, N. Y., assignor to I. D. Watch Case 00., Inc., New York, N. Y.
Application February 15, 1951, Serial No. 211,139
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in watch cases and, more particularly, to'an improved cover for watch faces.
One object of the invention is the provision of an improved watch case including a cover for the Watch face and unique, readily trippable latch means for said cover.
Another object of the invention is to construct and arrange the latching and tripping means in such manner that the latter includes a minimum of parts of which none are spring urged and yet are automatically re-set for re-use after an operation thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to construct the case and cover of the invention in such manner that the same is capable of being manufactured economically.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the watch case of the invention with the cover thereof in closed condition.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the case with the cover in open condition.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged plan view of the case with the cover in closed condition.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3 on a small scale and with the cover in open condition therefore not shown.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the cover illustrating the latching means therefor, certain parts being sectioned away to show the internal construction.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom view illustrating the cover hinge.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line of Fig. 2.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view on line 8-8 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, the means of the invention comprises a substantially rectangular metal casing 10 open at top and bottom. Mounted in the casing is a suitable watch II having a backing plate l2 which snaps into the bottom opening of case ill in the usual manner. A suitable hole is provided in one side wall of case 10 to accommodate the winding stem i3 of the watch. The upper edges of both side walls of casing 10 are convexly arcuate and have an arched, raised crystal I4 secured therebetween in the usual manner.
At either end of casing l0 there is provided a pair of projecting ears I5 which may be integral with the casing or may be welded thereto. The ears [5 are of the somewhat triangular shape shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the pair at one end of the casing have mounted between them a pivot rod l6 for a cover 11, see also Figs. 6 and 7. Mounted on pivot rod iii are a pair of sleeves l8 and a coiled spring having one end anchored to casing I0 and the other to cover I! in such manner as to tension said cover toward the open condition illustrated in Fig. 2. Cover I I is in the form of an arcuate metal sheet having one end welded to and bent around the sleeves [8 as at 2|, the said bent end abutting the end wall of casing ID to limit opening movements of the cover. The side edges of cover I! are bent over as at 22 to fit over the edges of crystal M as shown in Fig. 1.
The free end of cover I! is rolled as indicated at 23, to form a hollow rod-like member in which a pair of sleeves 24 are secured, see Fig. 5. slidably mounted in each sleeve 24 is a plunger 25 having a wide head 26 located between the sleeves. A spring 21 located between the plunger heads 26 acts to project the ends of said plungers out of the hollow rod-like member formed by roll 23. Preferably the ends of the plungers 25 are rounded and the ends of the under edge of roll 23 are beveled as shown in Fig. 2. In order to lock cover I! in the closed position of Fig. 1, the rounded ends of the plungers 25 engage in holes 28 in the adjacent ears [5. Referring to Figs. 3, 4 and 8 the upper edge of each of the ears l5 cooperating with the plungers is beveled as at 30 so that as the cover I! is moved to closed position the plungers 25 are cammed into the roll 23 against the tension of spring 21 until the plungers align with the holes 28 into which they snap.
The tripping means for disengaging the plungers 25 from the holes 28 comprises a pair of push buttons 3| secured on the ends of a pair of plungers 32 slidably mounted in reduced extensions of the holes 29 and having large rounded heads 33 situated in the holes 28 adjacent the ends of the plungers 25.
The construction is such that by pressing inwardly on the push buttons 3| the plungers 25 are disengaged from the holes 28 allowing cover I! to snap open. Push buttons 3| are re-set in position to be utilized again by the plungers 25 snapping into the holes 28.
If desired, the inner face of cover I! is provided with a spring clip frame 34 for a photograph 35 or the like.
right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of theinvention as de fined in the appended claims Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a watch case including a cover spring urged to open position, the combination of a pair of ears projecting from either end of the case, said cover being pivotally mounted between one pair of said ears, oppositely disposed holes in the other pair of said ears, a hollow rod-like member at the free end of the cover, a pair of sleeves in said hollow rod member, a pair of plungers slidably mounted in said sleeves and spring urged outward, said plungers having wide heads at their inner ends to abut the ends of the sleeves, said plungers engaging in said holes to lock the cover in closed position, bevels in said ears above said holes to cam the piungcrs, inward into the hollow rod member, push buttons freely slidably mounted in said holes to disengage the plungers therefrom.
2, In a watch case including a cover spring urged to open position, the combination of a pair or" ears projecting from either end of the case, said cover being pivotaiiy mounted between one pair of said ears, oppositely disposed holes in the other pair of said cars, a hollow rod-like member at the free end of the cover, a pair of sleeves fixed in said hollow rod member, a pair of plungers slidably mounted in said sleeves and spring urged outward, said plungers having wide heads at their inner ends to abut the ends of the sleeves, said piungers engaging in said holes to lock the cover in closed position, bevels in said ears above said holes to earn the plungers inward into the hollow rod member, reduced portions on said ears at the outer ends of said holes, plungers freely slidably mounted in said reduced portions and having wide rounded heads adapted to engage the first said plungers and move them out of the holes, and push buttons secured on the outer ends of the second said plungers.
3. In av watch case including a cover spring urged to open position, the combination of a pair of ears projecting from either end of the case, said cover being pivotally mounted between one pair of said ears, oppositely disposed holes in the other pair of said ears, a hollow rod-like member at'the free end of the cover, a pair of sleeves h red in said hollow rod member, a pair of plungers slidably mounted in said sleeves and spring urged outward, said plungers having wide heads at their inner ends to abut the ends of the sleeves, said plungers engaging in said holes to lock the cover in closed position, bevels in said ears above said holes to cam the plungers' inward into the hollow rod member, reduced por tions on said ears at the outer ends of said holes, plungers freely slidably mounted in said reduced portions and having wide rounded heads adapted to engage the first said plungers and move them out of the holes, and push buttons secured on the outer ends of the second said plungers, said push buttons being pressed inwardly manually to open the cover and being moved outwardly as the cover is closed by the said spring acting through the first said plungers.
I-IYMAN DINSTMAN.
