Description
JAMEsTsMiTm or New YORK, N. Y.
UMBRELLA- SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,606, dated August 29, 1882.
Application tiled July 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES T. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in lthe county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella and Canopy Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, strong, compact, and portable device for supporting artists sun-shades, umbrellas, and light canopies in desired positions; and it consists in certain features hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims. Figure l is an elevation of an umbrella or sun-shade supported by a device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of my device complete, and Fig. a plan of one of` its elements.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the iigures.
VThe device consists essentially of two clamps secured to each other adjustably, the one, A, being sufficiently large to permit of the introduction therein of a` projection on the other,
i B, as hereinafter described. The body porgow tion ot' the clamp A is provided with a broad l curved arm, a, and a narrow straight arm, a', and the latter has a thumb-screw, A', to the inner end of which is secured pivotally acurved bearing-plate, A3, the inner surface of which is corrugated, as shown at a2, to adapt it to firmlybind against any suitable standard or support, as G, when embraced by the arms a a and when` the screw A is tightened. The standard is shown in Fig. l as pointed (and it may be provided with a metal point) at c, whereby it can be readily driven i nto the ground. The body portions of the clamp are hollow, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and that o f the clamp B is provided with a hollow cylindrical projection, B3, circumferentially grooved at b, and havin giratchet-teeth b formed in the bed of the groove. rlhe projection B3 is fitted within the hollow body portion of the clamp A, so as to turn or revolve loosely therein, and is held in desired positions-that is, at any curing the clamp from further revolution in either direction.
It will be seen that the screw A:3 may be withdrawn from the ratchet-teeth and still remain within the groove 1),.thus preventing the withdrawal of the clamp B or its projection B3 from the clamp A, and that a further withdrawal of the screw permits a complete separation of the clamps.
The cla-mp B is also provided with a curved arm, b3, and a straight arm, b4, athumb-screw, B', and bearing-plate B2, and in each clamp the bearing-plate is secured to the screw pivotall y, a central longitudinal projectionon each of the screws being headed down loosely in a perforation in the bearing-plate. (See dotted lines of Fig. 3.)
It is apparent that the t-wo clamps as constructed are adapted to various uses other than that illustrated in Fig. 1-as, for example, the standard G may be removed and the clamp A secured to a buggy-seat at the front edge, where, by turning the clamp B a quarter-circle from the position shown in Fig. 2, it would be adapted to support an umbrella in an upright position. The clamps are also adapted to adjustably support a photographers head-rest or a head-rest in or on a barbers chair; but particular advantages attend its use as a support for artists sun-shades, as by' means of the rotation of clamp B in clamp A and the adaptation of the latter to be shifted about-'- that is, atany point around a suitable standard-any angle of inclination can be given to the shade. The clamps themselves are reduced in size and weight to the minimum, regard for 9o the necessary strength of the parts being had, and they can be conveniently carried in the pocket when not in actual use.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claini as new, and desire to sccure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hollow clamp A, provided. with the screw A3, in combination with clamp B, provided with the projection B3, having the groove b and ratchet-teeth bf in the bottom of the Ico groove, whereby the lclamp B may be secured handle `D, substantially as shown and dein desired positions and prevented from Withscribed. 1ov
drawal from the clamp A when being rotated In testimony whereof I affix my signature in therein, substantially as shown and described. presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 2. The combination of the hollow clamp A, JAMES THOMAS SMITH.
having the screw A', corrugated pivotal plate Witnesses: A2, and screw A3 with the clamp B, having LEWIS LEFFER'rs,
the grooved projection B3, the standard C, and JOHN I?. DALTON.
