r I ADJUSTABLE-UMBRELLA SUPPORT Filed March 1, 1948 INVENTOR, (175702 E. (7523002:
:provements. in adjustable .ur bjr fsur po relates .particularly to supports for the persons thereunder.
The 'principalobject of the present invention is the provision o f an umbrella support comprismg vposed in laterally offset relation: to the central rod ,of -.-an z'umbifiella, a connecting bar extending betWeen 'said-support staff and u mbrella rod, and adjustable means joiningsaid connecting bar respectively to said support-staff and said umbrella rod, whereby the elevation and angular-ity of the umbrella-relative to-sai'dsupport staff may be adjusted.
-An'ther object is-the provision'fin an -umbrella support of the class above described, of end-clamp members for said connecting bareach comprising a substantially U' shapedin'em'ber adapted to fit around the support staff or umbrellajrod for longitudinal sliding mOvementthereQma"boltinterconnecting opposite walls of said clamp and adapted to bring said clamp into gripping engagement with said support staif, said bolt also serving as a pivotal support for the adjacent end of said connecting rod, and a clamp bolt spaced apart from said first named bolt and extending through said connecting bar and through elongated slots formed therefor in said clamp walls.
Other objects are simplicity and economy of construction, ease and convenience of use, and adaptability to permit folding of the umbrella in the usual manner.
With these objects in View, as well as other objects which will become apparent in the course of the specification, reference will be hacl to the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is aside elevation, partially broken 'away, of a raised umbrella showing asupport embodying the present invention attached thereto.

Thu's when U a moved upwardlyrelative-to rad- 1a, r s dare extended'radially and theumbrella is ed The umbrella -may= be secured in the *by' means of a spring detent 2-8 [8" afid-adap'td-to extend 'Ollt- "carried by r wardly to engage; sleeve- 26. T" e su'pp'o't which'is the subject of this'invention comprises essentially a stafi 30 normally displaced laterally from rod [8, a connecting bar 32 extending between stafi 30 and rod I8, and two adjustable clamps 34 and 36 by means of which said connecting bar is respectively secured to stall 30 and to rod l8. Rod It! extends just beneath sleeve 26 and there terminates. Thus the area beneath the central part of the umbrella is left free for the occupancy of persons standing under the umbrella.
, Clamps 34 and 36 are substantially identical except that they are relatively inverted. Referring principally to clamp 34, it will be seen'that each clamp is formed from a sheet of metal bent to substantially U-shape, being'formed to present along its closed edge a channel 38 adapted to fit around staff 30 for longitudinal sliding movement thereon, and having a pair of substantially parallel side walls 40 extending outwardly from said staff.
Connecting bar 32 is tubular, and its end portions 42 are flattened to present a substantially rectangular cross-section, as best shown in Fig. 3. One of said end portions fits snugly between side walls 40 of clamp 34, and is pivotallyconnected therebetween by bolt 44, which extends through said side wallsand through a hole 46 provided therefor in connecting bar end section 42. Said end section 42 is sufiiciently yielding that when bolt 44 is tightened, side walls 40 of clamp 34 will be drawn together to clamp channel portion 38 of the clamp 34 firmly on staff 30.
When the bolts 44 and 48 are loosened, stafl 391.
scribed having astafijlaterally oilset frcm the] A bolt 48 passes through a hole M provided therefor in connecting bar 32, and through arouately elongated slots 52 formed in side walls 4| oi the clamp. These slots are centered on bolt 44, and permit the connecting bar to pivot 5 through a limited are on bolt 44. The connecting: bar may be fixed relative to the clamps by tightening bolts 48. Clamp 36 is identical with clamp 34, except that it is relatively inverted and the" channel portion 38 thereof fits around central rod I8 01 the umbrella.
Thus by loosening bolts 44 and 48, the elevation of umbrella in may be varied simply by changing"""' and connecting bar 32 may be brought into ap'-"-- proximate axial alignment with umbrella rod [8, i as shown in Fi 2, and hence the support does}; not interfere substantially with the normal fold-,
ing of the umbrella as shown.
What'I claim is: I {3 i. In an umbrellasupport of'the'classdecentral rod of an'umbrella and a connecting ba extending betweensaid staff and umbrella rod a clamp member adapted to secure one end said connecting barto. said stafi, said clamp corn prising a sheet of metal formed to substantially; U -shap.e formin'ga channel adapted to fit slidably and rotatably on said staifand substantially; parallel side walls extending outwardly from said? stair, said side walls being adapted to receive the end portion of U said connecting. bar pivotally therebetween, meansfondrawing said side walls 40 together whereby said staif and'connecting bar are dampingly ed therebetween. and a simi lar clamp member-whereby the opposite ,end of said connecting bar is adjustably secured to said umbrella rod.
2. In an umbrella support of the class described having a staff laterally ofiset from the central rod of an umbrella and a connecting bar extending between said staff and umbrella rod, a clamp member adapted to secure one end of said connecting bar to said stafi, said clamp comprising a sheet of metal formed to substantially U-shape forming a channel adapted to fit slidably and rotatably on said staff and substantially parallel side walls extending outwardly from said stafl, said side walls being adapted to receive the end portion of said connecting bar therebetween, a first bolt extending between said side walls adjacent said staff for pivotally supporting said connecting bar adjacent its end, a second bolt extending through said connecting bar in spaced relation to said first bolt and through arcuately elongated slots formed in said side Walls and cen- Date Number.
