UNITED G. W. R. BAYLEY, or BRAsHEAR, Louismiia".` `3
HOOK-BEADED SPIKE Specification of Letters Patent No.` 26,343, dated December `13,",18519".@gli
To all whom 'it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, G. W. R. BAYLEY, of
Brashear, in the parish of St. Mary and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Hook- Headed Spike for `Railway- Rails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view of my spike showing its application to, holding down my improved brace bearing piece, a portion `of which is shown in red lines. Fig. 2, is a top view of the same. Fig. 3, is a bottom view of my spike.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the three figures. i
My invention consists in forming on a rail spike head of a peculiar shape, a supplemental lip projecting ont behind itshead for allowing the insertion under it of an edged crow bar for drawing out the spike; and in so forming the head of the spike that `it will keep the nut guards in place and sev `the peculiar shaped head given to my rail spike is much stronger and will adapt itself" to all the various requirements of the ordi o nary hold-down spikes.
\ out bending or twisting the shank, as is invariably the case in the usual method of drawing common rail spikes, and frequently these spikes are so bent and injured in drawing as tol render them useless.` "With the supplemental lip a, as shown in the drawings, the spikes can be drawn out vertically and without bending or injuring them, therefore they can be used again. t
The head of my improved rail s ike, has its sides b, b, and front of the hea beveled downward and inward, but convex. This using them.
conti uration of the headts into a` correspon ing recess or beveled sided holeinfthe i nut fastening which is used to lock the nuts` ,j L p of rail bolts, `describedlby me in a former` application, and prevent the nut fastenings" i from becoming loose` in; consequence?,ofthey2"i` I passing and repassing of trains over the rail l 1 and also serves as a hold-downfspike" tose-f cure therail to the crosstie. 3" 1 o L. ,d In my articial base piece,or brace bear` ing, a spike of this description ,isveryneces-` Il sary for keeping said piecein` a firm `and i fixed position against the outside face of the rail, and preventing` it from getting loose, for in `this case the base piece would `bein-` efcient and rendereduseless. Thel brackets, i"
base bearing pieces and all `those `parts in H` which a spike can be; used advantageously are recessed to correspond with the` under w convex surface of the lspike head,` andfthe` spikes will in every `instance hold` dowmasl` well as sidewise, these pieces andprevent the possibility of their getting looseor escap`-j1 ing in any direction. 1. i i A i These spikes are specially adaptediand particularly `useful for` my improvements inf M rails, rail-supports andifastenings andlthefzl" nut fastenings for rail.. bolts, `still theyiwill. be found equally if not moreellicient than the ordinary railroadfspike, as aholdfdown spike; and the supplementallip in the rear of the spike head, ifyladded `orattachecil" to the heads of the common "orordinary pat`` terns of railroad spikes, oritoial spikes of any pattern, will, by facilitatingftheir quick` and easy withdrawahffwithoutinjury to the spike by bending or twisting the same, jre, sult in great economyito railway companies I I do not wish to confine myself Ato the :use of the supplementallip"to:spikes offgmy peculiar'pattern of spike headhbut` I` desire `1,00 j also to cla-im the saidsupplemental lip when` attached or added tdfspike heads ofany i pattern or form whatever. i. f` f3 l.
What I claim as my invention and desire] ,j to secure by Letters Batent,is,f d 10.5
The improved railrgoald spike having the sides and front of its headbeveleddown"` ward and inward but convex` and having ,o the peculiar projectingflip'or hook behind for facilitating its easylwithdrawal,
new article of manufacture.`
