FLOOR-FASTENING.

lie it known that I, DIoN Knarn, a citizen of the llnited States, residing at \Valla Walla, in the county of W'alla lValla and State of li asl'iington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floorl astenings, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The fastening which is the subject matter of the present application for patent is designed for securing the floor timbers 0r planks of bridges, docks or similar structures.
it is the object of the invention to provide a fastening which facilitates the laying and securing in place of the flooring, and
which permits the ready removal ofsingle planks for the purpose of renewal, without rendering the fastening means unlit for fur ther use. i
The invention also has for its object to provide a fastening which is located on the under side of the planks, so that there is no chance of water getting around the same to rot the planks.
ln the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a. fragment of a bridge, dock or similar structure provided with the floor fastening which is the subject matter of the present application for patent; Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 22 of Fig. l: Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side o the structure, and Figs. 1, 5 and 6 are elevations of the fastening units.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 10 denotes a superstructure composed of L b aams, on which are laid stringers 11,which latter are also I-bcams. The floor planks 12 are laid on the stringers and secured thereto by the fastening devices to be hereinafter drscrilwd. At the edges of the flooring are the usual guard beams 13.
The fastening means for each plank 12 comprises three units, to wit--a series of clips in the shape of a hook 14 having a threaded shank 15; a pin 16 having a threaded portion 17, and a lock comprising a hook 18 having a threaded shank 19 and an offset -z tren1ity 20.
In laying the planks 12, a pin and a. lock are screwed into the under side of each plank, near one end thereof, so as to come on opposite sides of the stringer 11 at the corresponding end of the structure, and the clips are screwed into the under side of the plank to come on one side of the remaining stringers. The clips are positioned so that the hooks l lall point in one direction, in order that they may he slipped under the top flanges of the stringers on one side thereof. gage the top flange of the end stringer on the inner side thereof, and the lock is posi' tioned so that its oii'sct hook portion 20 may be swung under the top flange of the end stringer on the outer side thereof. After the fastening devices are properly positioned as statei'l, the plank is laid on the stringers and driven lengthwise to engage the hooks with the stringer flanges, the lock first being turned away front the end stringer in order to permit the plank to be driven as stated. The lock is then turned to engage the hook portion 20 with the end stringer flange, which looks the plank fast and solid. The hook portion 18 of the lock engages the under side of the plank. The next plank is laid with the fastening devices reversed, so that the whole forms a brare to the stringers from both sides, thus holding the same very rigid. As the fastening devices are all on the under side of the planks, there is no chance for water to get around the same to rot the planks.
If a plank gets worn or injured, necessitating renewal, it can be easily removed by raising the guard beam 13 and reaching around the end plank, and turning the lock out of engagement with the end stringer flange. 'ihe plank is then driven in a direction to disengage the hooks I L from the stringer flanges. after which the plank may be taken up. The fastening devices can be removed and placed on the new plank, which latter is secured as liereinbcfore described,
after which the guard beam is replaced. It
will thus be seen that the flooring can be readily repaired with a great saving in time, labor and expense.
I claim:
1. The combination with a flooring composed of indepeni'lent I'I'IGITlbQl'S, and string ers on which said members are laid and from which they are separately removable; of means for securing the flooring members to the stringers, said. means comprising hook-shaped clips mounted on the under side of the flooring members to engage one side of all the stringers except one of the end stringers, and a locking device carried by the flooring members at one end thereof The pin 16 positioned to enand engaging the side of the aforesaid end stringer, and being disengageable from said end stringer, the clips all pointing in one direction to permit removal of the flooring members individually from the stringers by shifting said members in the direction of their length when the locking devices are disengaged from the end stringer.
The combination With a flooring composed of independent members, and stringers on which said members are laid and from which they are separately removable; of means for securing the flooring members to the stringers, said means comprising hook-shaped clips and a locking device mounted on the under side of each flooring member, the clips engaging one side of the stringers, and the locking device engaging the opposite side of an end stringer and being disengageable therefrom, the clips and the locking devices of the respective flooring members engaging opposite sides of the stringers alternately.
3. The combination with a flooring composed of independent members and stringers on Which said members are laid and from Which they are separately removable; of means for securing the flooring members to the stringers, said means comprising wok-shaped clips and a locking device mounted on the under side of each flooring member, the hooks of the clips all pointing in one direction to engage one side of the stringers, and the locking device engaging the opposite side of an end stringer and being disengageable therefrom, said locking device having a hook Which engages the under side of the flooring member and has an offset stringer-engaging portion which points in the opposite direction from the hooks of the clips.
