MOP HAVING A COMPACT HEAD Raymond E. ChalfanafBineBluyArk.
Application July 1, 1949, Serial No. 102,646
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in mops, and the principal object of the invention is to provide .a mop of the character herein described, which is extremely simple in construction, durable, convenient to manufacture and to assemble, and economical to produce in large or small quantities.
In particular, the invention concerns itself with the provision of means for attaching the mop head to the mop handle, while another feature of the invention resides in the construction of the mop head per se.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational View of the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure l;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3--3 in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a plan view of a head support used in the invention; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the head support in position on the mop handle.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a mop designated generally by the reference character I0, the same embodying in its construction a mop handle I2 having an end portion provided at diametrically opposite sides thereof with transverse keeper notches I4.
A mop head support designated generally by the reference character I6 consists of an elongated, endless band I8, preferably formed from wire and providing a pair of closely spaced side members 20 which are joined at the ends thereof by arcuate connecting portions 22, this band being positionable transversely on the handle I2 by spreading apart intermediate portions of the side members 20 and pressing them into the notches I4 so that they constitute a pair of keeper elements 24, whereby the entire head support I6 may be mounted on the handle I2, as shown in Figure 5.
The mop head 26 simply consists of a set of flexible elements such as the cords 28, and when the invention is being assembled, end portions of these elements are passed inwardly over the side members`20 and the support I6 is applied to the handle I2 as already described, after which the portions 24 are pressed into the notches I4. The end portions 30 of the cords 28 are frictionally clamped between the side members 2li, and cords are, of course, also provided between the elements 24 of the side members 20 and the handle,
in which instance the free end portions of the cords are clamped in the notches I4 as indicated at 32 in Figure 2.
Additional means are provided for firmly retaining the mop head elements 23 on the support I6, these last-mentioned means involving the provision of an elongated cap 34 which is attached to the handle I2 by suitable screws or nails 3B and frictionally engages portions of the elements 28 which are disposed between the side members I8 and the cap 34, as will be clearly apparent. Needless to say, in addition to its primary purpose of assisting to retain the mop head elements 28 on the support I6, the cap or cover 34 also serves to conceal the support and thereby substantially improves the appearance of the mop as a whole.
It is to be noted that although the invention is primarily intended to pertain to the construction of mops, the teachings of the invention may also be applied to the construction of brooms etc., in which instance broom corn is, of course, substituted for the mop head cords, as will be clearly apparent.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing disclosure and, accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a mop, the combination of a head support comprising a flat elongated endless band providing a pair of closely spaced side members, a head mounted on said support and consisting of a set of flexible elements extending upwardly and inwardly over said side members and having free end portions thereof frictionally retained between REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the 15 file of this patent:
