IMPROVEMENT IN BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,040, dated February 27, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Brooms, invented by ROBERT F. DoBsoN, of Darlington, in the county of Lafayette and State of Wisconsin.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of brooms, whereby they are made stronger and more durable than brooms of ordinary construction; and it consists in the construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of a broom constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. l, taken on the line wf Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the brush of the broom. B is the handle. C and D are Wire bands around the brush. The band G is made of sufcient size to inclose the requisite quantity of corn for a broom, and approximating to the desired shape of the broom. The corn, with the band, is then compressed by thepress seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The band is suciently stiff to retain the shape given it by the press, the jaws of which are grooved so as to leave the center of the broom sufciently thick to admit the handle. The handle is sharpened and driven in, as seen in Fig. l. The band D is put on while the broom is in the press. A hook is formed on the ends of the wire which forms the bands, and they are hooked together as seen in the drawing. When the press is removed the corn expands, so that the bands tightly compress it and make a very strong and durable broom. The handle is secured in place by a nail through hook-fastening of the upper band, as seen at E.
I do not broadly claim a Wire band around a broom.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a broom composed of the brush A, handle B, bands C and D, and nail E, when the same are combined and arranged as and for the purposes described. l
