It will be noted in Figure 7 that the member I6 at its free end is slitted along the apex of the dihedral between the two flanges, and that the top flange I9 is offset from the side flange to form a lug 22 parallel to the plane of said top -ange defining a slot ZI between said lug and the upper edge of said side flange. The slot I5 is made relatively wide so as to enable the memlber I6 of the rack to be inserted into the brackets through the slots I5, including the relatively wide ends of the members I6 created by the offset lug 22.
The inner end of the members I6 are within the channel members 9 and slide along the iioors of said channel members as the rack is raised towards a vertical plane or lowered into its fully collapsed position shown in Figure 7. Y
As the rack 6 approaches the vertical, the top flange comes out through the slot I5, until finally when the rack is in vertical position the entire Atopflange with the exception of the lug 22, lies outside of the face plate S, between said face plate and the tongue I2. When the rack reaches this position it is pushed in a downward direction,
which causes the lug 22 to come down behind the face plate 3, the lower part of said face plate designated as 23 being within the slot 2i. Through vthe interdigitation of the slotted ends of the side -members I6 with the lower parts 23 of the face plates, the rack is positively held rigidly in an upright or vertical position with its side members I6 and struts I8 contacting the down folded end 'of the bed spread at spaced points, as clearly .shown in Figures 1 and 2. When it is desired to collapse the rack, it is first pulled in an upward direction in order to disengage the slotted member I6 from the face plates, whereupon, it may be 'tilted and pushed back through the slots I4 and l5, the inner endl sliding upon the bottom of the channel member 9 in the manner already described.
When in fully collapsed position, only the top Vbar II projects, as shown in Figure '7, this being readily and completely concealed by the overhanging bedspread. l
Figure 5 shows that th'ediagonal struts I8 have an oiset portion 24, which enables the struts I8 :to clear the tongue I2 of the bracket 5.
It will be apparent from the above description that this rack attachment gives all the advantages of a footboard without'the unsightly `lines of one, in the daytime, to spoil the smoothness and compactness which characterizes the Holly- Y by those skilled in the art that the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts, as shown, are by way of example and not to be construed as limiting the scope of the invention.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An attachment for a Hollywood bed comprising a pair of similar brackets having means by which they may be respectively secured to the opposite legs at the foot of the bed, anda rack including side members and a top member 'convnected therebetween, said side members being 4 tiltably and slidably mounted in said brackets with a range of movement from an erect position at the foot of the bed predominantly on the outside of said brackets to a recumbent position predominantly on the inside of said brackets and beneath the bed.
2. An attachment for a Hollywood bed comprising a pair of brackets, each comprising a face plate having a tongue oiset from the plane of said face plate and delining with the edges of the opening from which it was struck, communicating slots through said face plate at the top and free side of said tongue, said brackets each including a perforated side plate to be secured to a leg of the bed adjacent the foot, each bracket having a channel member secured to said face plate below said slot, on the side opposite said tongue, having means adjacent the end remote from said face plate forsupporting it upon a longitudinal member of the bed, a rack comprising side members of right angular cross-section having top and side flanges, a transverse .top bar connected between said side members, the latter members being slidably and tiltably mounted in said brackets with their anges in the respective slots and with their lower ends within said channel members, said rack being movable from a recumbent position in which its side members are predominantly inside of said face plate and beneath the bed to an erect vposition at the foot of the bed in which it is predominantly inside of said face plates with a flange of each side member between the corresponding face plate and its tongue, the lower ends of said side members being slotted between their top and side flanges, to permit said flanges to embrace said face plates below said tongues for maintaining said rack erect.
3. An attachment for a Hollywood bed comprising brackets attachable to the opposite legs adjacent the foot of the bed, said brackets each having a guide member adapted to extend longitudinally of the bed and having means for supporting it upon a longitudinal member of the bed, Vand a rack including va pair of parallel side members and a connecting transverse member, said side members being tiltably and slidably mounted in said brackets with their lower ends engaging said guide means, said rack being movable from a recumbent position predominantly inside of said brackets and beneath the bed, to an erect position at the foot of .the bed predominantly outside of said brackets.
4. An attachment for a Hollywood bed as claimed in claim 3, said side members being provided with means engageable with said brackets when said side members are erect for maintaining them erect.
5. An attachment for a Hollywood bed comprising brackets attachable to the opposite legs adjacent the foot of the bed, said brackets each including a face plate anda tongue oiset from the plane of said face plate, each bracket having a guide member adapted to extend longitudi- -nally of the bed and having means :for supporting it upon a longitudinal member of the bed, and
a rack including a pair of parallel side mem- 5 the foot of the bed between said face plates and tongues.
6. An attachment for a Hollywood bed comprising a pair of similar brackets having means by which they may be secured at transversely spaced points to the bed adjacent the foot, and a rack including side members and a rtop member connected therebetween, said side members being tiltably and slidably mounted in said brackets with a range of movement from an erect position at the foot of the bed predominantly outside of said brackets to a recumbent position 6 predominantly beneath the bed inside of said brackets.
