Be it known that I, FRANK GALIK, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Fairgrove, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michi' gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Vtardrobes and Beds, of which the following is a speciliczu tion.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined wardrobes and beds wherein a structure embodying hinged sections is adapted to function as a wardrobe when in a set up vertical position and is adapted to be moved on its hinge connection for assuming a horizontal position for use as a bed.

A further object of theinvention is to provide a combined wardrobe and bed embodying a base structure having a sliding drawer therein and an upper structure hinged to the base structure with a central longitudinal partition dividing the upper section into a front wardrobe compartment and a rear compartment containing a bed spring with an upper front decorative panel board for the upper section hinge-ally mounted thereon and adapted to be moved to a position as a support for the outer end of the upper section when moved 011 its hinge connection with the base section.

With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

or screen with supporting roller for covering the rear side of the structure when set up as a wardrobe and shown in Fig. 2.

The device embodies a base structure having a bottom wall 1, end walls 2, a front wall 3 and a relatively high rear wall 4 that constitutes a head board when the device is set up in position as a bed. The front wall 3 of the base structure has an opening therein for the sliding reception of the drawer 5 while a transverse bar 6 extends between the end walls 2 and overlies the drawer when in a closed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 6.

The upper structure is hinged to the forward upper edge of the base structure and includes side walls 7 connected by a bottom wall 8 and an upper wall 9 and a front wall 10. The lower end of the front wall 10 is hinged at 11 to the upper front edge of the base structure and the entire upper structure of the device swings forwardly on its hinge mounting as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4:.

A longitudinally extending vertical partition 12 extends between the bottom and top walls 8 and 9 to divide the upper structure into a forward wardrobe compartment and a rear bed spring and mattress compartment. Hinged doors 13 are carried by the front wall 10 and terminate at their upper ends adjacent the transverse partition shelf 14 extending between the side walls 7, the partition 12 forming an upper compartment 15 and a lower compartment 16, the partition wall 12 carrying clothes hooks 17 adjacent to and beneath the partition 14: as shown in Fig. 4. The closure for the upper compartment 15 is in the form of a panel board 18 hinged as at 19- to the forward edge of the upper wall 9 and carries an upper extension 18 extending above the upper wall 9 as shown in Fig. 2.

A bed spring supporting frame including side rails 20 and transverse end bars 21 and 22 supports a metallic spring 23 with the forward transverse bar 22 secured as at 2 1 to the side walls 7 adjacent the upper wall 9 of the upper structure rearwardly of the partition 12 with the other transverse bar 21 positioned below the bottom wall 8 of the upper structure and between lower end extensions 7 of the side walls 7. The side rails 20 rest upon the rear face of the partition 12 when the device is set up as a bed as shown in 4, and is disposed in the compartment 25 rearwardly of the partition 12. The low-er face of the upper wall 9 adacent the rear edge thereof carries a plurality of eye bolts 26 by which a mattress may be" supported when the upper structure is vertically positioned as a wardrobe as shown in Figs. 1 and 2;

\Vhen it is desired to convert the device from the wardrobe position shown in rig. 2 to the bed position shown in Fig. 3, the curtain 29 is disengaged from the hook 31 and wound upon the roller 28 and the up per structure moved on its hinge connection 11 with the base structure to a horizontal position. The panel board 18 is also moved upon its hinge mounting 19 with the extension 18 thereof engaging the upper face ofthe uper wall 9 as shown in Figs. 3 ands while the lower edge of the panel board 18 constitutes a foot support for the outer free swinging end of the upper structure, the

panel board being'retained in this position by the hook 32 securedat one endas at 33 in the compartment 15. with the, hook end thereofengaging the eyeSs-carried by the inner face of the panel board '18. A pillow board 35 'is hinged as at 36 to the'inner face of the rear wall t'of the base structure and is moved forwardly with the rear wall 4 of the base structure and when the upper structure is lowered the forwardly beveled edge of thepillo-w board rests upon the beveled edge of the adjacent transverse bar 21 of the bed spring frame. The relative positions of the pillow board 35 and the transverse bar 21 of the spring frame, when'the upper structure is raised,- areshown in igure 6, the ad acent contact edges of the transverse bar 21 and pillow board 35 being beveled, auton'iati'c tipping of the board to the position shown in Figure 6 isaccomplished when the spring frame is elevated. When the free edge of the board passes beyond the transverse bar, the same engages the spring bottom 23 and is moved thereover upon continued movement of the upper structure to be displaced as shown and not to interfere with the upward movement of the upper structure. It will therefore be seen that movement of the pillow board is secondary in operation to the movement of the upper structure and is gravitationally restored to its operative horizontal position when-the upper structure is lowered. A rigid bedstrueture is thus provided, the panel board 18 offering a rigid support for the free swinging end of the upper structure wh le the board 15 properly supports a pillow in con junction with the mattress mounted upon the spring 23. 1

While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is v In a combined wardrobe and bed, a base structure, an upper structure hinged thereto in the form of a combined wardrobe and bed, the upper structure supportinga bed springha-ving transverse end rails with the upper edge of the rail ad1acent thebase being bevelled, and a pillow board hinged to the base and having a forward bevelled edge supported on the bevelled edge of the bed rail when the bed is lowered the bevels being so arranged that the upward folding movement of the bed displaces the pillow board from the bed rail and folds it upwardly.
