It has been found that it is more convenient for the operator to feed small documents, such as checks, cards, etc, vertically into a station, whereas relatively long documents, such as legal papers, letters, etc. are fed more conveniently if inserted horizontally into the machine. Also, when various sized documents, checks, etc., are photocopied, it is essential that the receptacle for receiving the documents be adjustable with respect to the discharge exit so as to stack the documents properly. It is also essential that the means provided for moving the documents through the machine be of such arrangement and design so that all lengths of document can be moved through the machine from the point of insertion to that of discharge with the same case.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for handling and photographically copying records or documents and more particularly to an efi'icient arrangement for delivering the records or documents to the photographing station and then discharging them into a suitable receptacle.
As is well known in the photocopying art, photocopying machines have been designed in which the documents are fed either horizontally or vertically into the machine. It has been found that it is more convenient for the operator to feed small documents, such as checks, cards, etc, vertically into a station, whereas relatively long documents, such as legal papers, letters, etc. are fed more conveniently if inserted horizontally into the machine. Also, when various sized documents, checks, etc., are photocopied, it is essential that the receptacle for receiving the documents be adjustable with respect to the discharge exit so as to stack the documents properly. It is also essential that the means provided for moving the documents through the machine be of such arrangement and design so that all lengths of document can be moved through the machine from the point of insertion to that of discharge with the same case. To these ends the present invention satisfies the need for a versatile machine in which two sta-' tions are provided for inserting documents either horizontally or vertically into a common guideway in the machine and so arranged that documents can be alternately inserted into either station; in which a drive means for moving the documents through the machine is capable of handling a small card or a long document; and in which a receptacle is provided which can be adjusted with respect to a discharge exit in the machine for providing proper stacking of the documents in accordance with their size.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of a document handling and photographic copying machine adapted to receive documents inserted either horizontally or vertically into said machine for delivery through the photographing station to a discharge exit and a receptacle for the documents.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a document handling and copying apparatus having a station for normally inserting documents vertically into the machine and a second station for inserting documents horizontally into the machine.
A further object is the provision of a document handling and copying machine having a portion of the top wall of the machine slidably mounted 2 I so as to support the second station when docu-- ments are inserted horizontally into the machine and to cover the secondstation when it is placed in its inoperative position within the machine.
Still another object is the provision in a docu-; ment handling and copying machine of a drive means comprising a plurality of operatively connected driven and idler rolls on each side of the photographing station for moving the document therethrough and to a discharggexit, a drive means for one group of rolls, and an inter-, mediate drive means for operatively connecting the drive means from the group of rolls on one side of the photographing station to the rolls on the other side of the photographing station. 7
A still further object is the provision in a document handling and copying machine of a means for receiving the documents discharged from the machine and which is adjustable with respect to the discharge exit and comprises a document receiving portion and a document stacking portion.
Other and still further objects of the invention will be suggested to those skilled in the art by the following description. The aforementioned and other objects of the invention are embodied in a, document handling and photographic copying apparatus which comprises generally a casing having a recess and a portion of its top wall slidably mounted for movement to an opened and a closed position, a station for feeding documents vertically into the machine, a second station for inserting documents horizontally into the machine and supported inposition by the slidable'portion of the top wall, a guideway common to both stations, a photographing station, a drive means for moving the documents into and past the photographing station and through a second guideway to a discharge exit for disposal into a document receptacle located in the recess in the casing. The vertical feeding station is mountedon the top Wall and terminates in a guideway for directing the documents into the drive means for moving the documents through the machine. The second station for feeding documents horizontally into the machine is pivotally mounted on the casing and is adapted to be moved from an inoperative position within the casing to an operative position on top of the casing where it is supported by the sliding portion of the top wall for receiving documents inserted therein. The guideway common to both stations comprises members forming a V-shaped throat for directing documents to the drive means and has a guide member pivotally mounted on the first station which blocks the entrance into the guideway for documents inserted horizontally into the machine when the second station is in the inoperative position. When the second station is moved to the operative position, the guide member is moved from its blocking. position to a position for directing the documents inserted horizontally into the machine into the common guideway for pick-up by the drive means. The

A motor connected through a plurality of belts and pulleys provides the drive 'means for the first pluralityof rolls, and an intermediate drive means, which is located adjacent one end of the photographing station, operatively connects the first plurality of rolls with the second plurality of rolls for moving the document through the second guideway: The second guideway comprises two spacedapart plates mounted between walls provided in the casing and having one end of the plates adjacent the glass guides for receiving the documents' from the photographing station and the other end providing a discharge exit which terminates in the recess of the casing. The receptacle comprises a document receiving portion and a stacking portion, the receptacle being mounted on support members which engage a guideway in the recess for adjusting the receptacle with respect to the discharge exit and which is clamped in position by: apair of locking members which engage the guideway and which are carried by arms pivotally mounted on the support members for the receptacle.- While the invention is illustrated and described with respect to a machine for the handling and photographing of documents, records, checks, or the like, it should be understood that the invention is equally applicable to many other types. of machines in which documents and the like are handled.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the photocopying machine comprises a casing Ill of the form and. shape similar to that of a desk and having a top wall H and a recess or knee hole I2. The; top wall. H is provided with a portion l3 which is movable to, an opened and closed position, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. The top wall H has also mounted thereon a feeding station, designated broadly by the numeral I4, into which documents or the like are inserted in a vertical direction for photocopying within the machine.
The feeding station I4 comprises a formed metal plate i5, of the shapev bestv shownin Figs. 7 and S. which. is secured to the. flange. 16; on. the topv wall H. The plates, i5 and H are inclined towards each other to form a throat for directing the documents to the drive means within the casing. The caps I9 which are similar in shape to the section formed by the. plates. I5 and: H are provided with. a formed-up lug 20 and have secured thereto a disc 2| provided with a tapped hole for the stud 22. The. stud 22 projects through a horizontal longitudinal slot 23 in the plate 49 and permits movement of the caps l9 along the plates is and H to vary the width of the aperture in accordance with the size of the documents being photocopied. By turning the stud 22 into the disc 2|, the cap I9 is clamped in position on the plate 49 by the lug 20.
The second station 24 for inserting documents horizontally into the machine comprises a formed plate 25 having. downwardly extending flanges 26 which are adapted to be pivotally connected to the frame members 21 at 28. The adjustable members 29 are mounted on the top surface of the plate and clamped in position by means of the studs 30 in accordance with the width of the document being photocopied. The members 29 are provided with vertical flanges 3| and formed over flanges 32 to form a throat for receiving and directing the documents into the guideway 33. The rear portion of the plate 25 has a formed-up portion 34 to which the cover plate 35 is secured, the end 36 of which extends below the plate 25, see Figs. 3 and 4.
The slidable portion I3 of the top wall I I is slidably mounted on the casing II by means of the inverted U-shaped members 3'1 which are secured to the slide flanges 38 on the portion I3 and which engage similar members 39 secured to the flanges 49 on the top wall II, see Fig. 5. The portion I3 is held in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 4, by the leaf spring 4I fixed thereto which engages the edge of the well 42 formed in the front wall 43 of the casing I I. As shown in Fig. 4, the horizontal station 24 is covered by the portion I3 when it is in the inoperative position Within the casing Ii. To be moved to an operative position, the portion I3 must be moved to a position, as in Fig. 3, where the second station 24 will be uncovered so that the operator may move it about the pivot 28 to a position where the end 345 of plate 35 will engage the lip 44 formed in the inner flange 45 of the portion is. An aperture 46 is provided in the plate 25 to facilitate the raising and lowering of the second station into position. To move the horizontal station into its inoperative position, the plate 25 is raised until the end 38 will permit the portion is to be moved away therefrom, the station can then be lowered into the casing I I until the flanges 26 abut the pins 41 on the frame members 21.
The guideway 33 is formed by the plates 48 and 49 fixed to the frame members 21 and the plates I5 and I! for directing the documents toward the photographing station. The plate 48 is formed and mounted between the frame members 2! so as to provide in coniunction with the plate 25 a continuous path for directing the documents into the photographing station. The curved flange I8 has secured thereto a hinge 50 having one portion secured to the fiange and the other portion secured to a curved plate 5!. The plate 5i serves as a guide member for the documents inserted into the station 24, the curved portion 52 of the plate '5I serving to defiect the document downwardly toward the photographing station, see Figs. 3 and '7. The plate 5| is held in this directing position when the station 24 is in the operative position by the actuating member 53 which is adjustably mounted on the plate 25. When the station 25 is moved to its inoperative position within the casing II, the plate 5| drops against the guide plate 48 to block the opening formed by the plates I1 and 48 to form one side of the guideway 33 for directing the documents inserted into the station I4 toward the photographing station. It will be noted from Figs. 3 and '7, that the curved plate 5I in its directing position does not contact the plate 49 to block documents inserted into the station I4. This arrangement permits the operator to insert short documents into station I4 between long documents which are being fed into station 24.
The photographing station comprises two spaced-apart glass guides 55 between which the document is moved and which are in the photo-- graphic field of a film unit which by means of a system of mirrors, not shown, will photograph both sides of the document simultaneously. The glass guides 55 are adapted to be readily removed from the casing for the purpose of cleaning and replacement.
The means for moving the documents comprises a plurality of rolls located between the common guideway 33 and the photographing station and a second plurality of rolls between the photographing station and discharge exit for the documents, see Figs. 7, 8 and 9. The first plurality of rolls comprises two groups of rolls, the first group containing the driven rolls 6!! which are secured to the shaft BI which is journalled in the frame members 2?, and a single roll 62 which is carried by the shaft 63 and in conjunction With rolls 59 serves as a straightening roll for the documents and as a double sheet stop which through the linkage '64- and the microswitch 6-5 will shut oif the machine if more than one document is inserted in the machine at a time. The structure and operation of this set of contacting rolls is similar in function and operation to the disclosures made in the U. S. Patents 1,908,845, issued to Roy S. Hopkins on May 16, 193-3, and 2,196,741, issued to Alvin E. Schubert on April 9, 1940, and entitled Apparatus for Handling Discrete Documents and Double Sheet Stop, respectively. The second group of rolls, which are adjacent the photographing station for directing the document between the glass flats 55, includes the driven rolls 66 which are mounted on the shaft BI journalled in the frame member 21 and the idler rolls 58 which are mounted on the shaft I69 journalled in the brackets I9. The brackets ID are pivotally mounted on the frame members 21 and maintained in contact with the driven rolls '56 by means of the springs II which have one end secured to pins 12 on the brackets I9 and the other end secured to the pins It on the members 21.
The drive means, see Fig. 3, for the driven rolls iii! and 56 comprises a motor I4 which is connected by means of a pulley I5 and a belt I6 to the pulley TI loosely mounted on the shaft I8. The pulley IT has fixed thereto a pulley I9 which is connected by means of the belt 89 to a pulley 8! loosely mounted on the shaft 82. The pulley has fixed thereto a pulley 83 which is connected by means of a belt 84 to the pulley 85 loosely mounted on the shaft I8 and having fixed thereto the 131711183 3 5. The pulley 86 by means of the belt 8? drives the pulley 89 which is keyed to the shaft 82 thereby driving the sprocket 89 which is also keyed to the shaft 82. The sprocket 8'9 drives the sprockets '29 and 9| fixed to the shafts BI and 61, respectively, by means of the endless chain or drive 9'2, see Figs. 3, 7 and 8. Since all the rolls are rubber covered, the rolls B3 and 58, which are driven, tend to drive the rolls I52 and 69, respectively, for moving the document therebetween into the photographing station.
The second plurality of rolls comprise driven rolls 95, 96, 97 and 98 which are secured to the shafts 99, I 99, It! and I92, respectively, which are journalled in the frame members .21. The idler rolls I93, I94, I and I96 are mounted on the shafts I97, I99, I99 and :59, respectively, which are journalled in the brackets III which are pivotally mounted to the frame members 21. The idler rolls are resiliently held in contact '2"v with. thedriven rolls by the springs; II2v fixed. to the. brackets. III and theframe members 21, see Figs], 8and 9.
The second guideway comprises the plates I I5 and II6- which are formed over at one end III adjacent the. photographing station to provide an entering aperture for the documents and at the other end provides a discharge exit II8 for the documents. The plates H5 and II6 are provided withv aligned apertures IIQ through which a po-rtionof the peripheries of the driven rolls 95, 55, 91 and 98and. the idler rolls I53, I04, I05 and I06 extend so that the point of contact or the rolls is substantially central with respect to the spaced. between the plates. The plates. I I 5 and. I are held in position between the frame members 21 by means of the rightangle brackets I which have one, leg fixed to the plates and the other leg fixed to the frame member 21.
The. intermediate drive means which is arranged around and adjacent to one end of the photographing station comprises the drive sprocket I23 fixed to one end of the shaft 67, an idler sprocket I24 loosely mounted on the shaft I25 mounted on the right frame member 27, a driven sprocket I 26 on the shaft 33, an endless drive member or chain I21 encircling the sprockets I23, I24 and I25, a drive sprocket I28 keyed to the sprocket I24 and adapted to turn therewith, a driven sprocket I29 on the shaft I50, and an endless chain I30 encircling the sprockets I28 and I29. The sprocket I 3I which is also keyed to the shaft I05 drives the shaft I flI by means of the endless chain I32 which encircles the sprocket I3I and the sprocket I33 fixed to the shaft IGI. In a like manner, the chain I34 encircles the sprocket I35 on the shaft I01 and the sprocket I36 which is keyed to the shaft I02 to drive the rolls 98. With this arrangement, the second plurality of rolls are operatively connected by means of the chains I32 and I-34, and the chains I27 and I3!) provide an intermediate drive means for operatively connecting the drive means for the first plurality ofrolls to the second plurality of rolls. Further, by arranging the intermediate drive around the end of the photographing station, the glass guides 55 can be readily removed and replaced with. no interference. This arrangement also provides and allows the first group of rolls, namely 95 and I03, to be placed close to the photographing station so that the leading edge of the document canbe grasped by the rolls in order to maintain. the; document smooth and flat as it passes through the photographic field of the film unit.
The document receptacle I45 comprises a receiving portion MI and a stacking portion I 42 which is mounted in the recess I2. The receiving portion plate I4I comprises a portion I43 which forms the bottom and sloping back wall of the stacking portion I42 and a portion I45 which extends into the casing I5 and which can be adjusted with respect to the discharge exit H8 in a manner about to be described. The stacking portion I42 comprises side walls I45 and, a front wall comprising two metal frames I41 and I48 which are secured to the bottom wall I43 and the side walls I45 and in which the transparent plastic windows I49 and I50, respectively, are supported for permitting the operator to view the stacking of the documents without having to remove the receptacle. The space; provided. between the frames I41 and I48.
and theslot I5I in the bottomwall I43 permits the operator to grasp the documents for removal from thereceptacle. The recess I2 has mounted along itsside walls I52 a guideway I53 comprisingtwo spaced-apart L-shaped members I54 and I55, see Fig. 14. The receiving portionv I4I has secured to the underside thereof support members I55, which are of the shape best shown in Fig. 14, provided with extending portions I51 and I58 for securing the member I55 to the receiving portion I4I and for supporting the receptacle on said guideway I53, respectively. The plates I54 and I55 are mounted at an angle on the walls I52in accordance with the, angle made by the portion I43 of plate I4I which forms the bottom and sloping back wall of the, stacking portion, I42.
The operating member I66 for the document receptacle comprises the arms IBI which are pivotally mounted on the support members I55 by means of the shaft I52 journalled in the members I55 and which extends across the back of the receptacle I45. A handle bar I53 is secured between the arms I5I and normally lies below the receptacle I45 in the position shown in Fig. 11. On each arm IIiI adjacent the shaft I62, looking or clamping members I64 are secured so that in the normal position, as shown in Figs. 11 and 1.4, the members I54 are in contact with the upper member I55 to clamp the receptacle 545 to the guideway I53. When the bar I53 is fully released, the turning moment about the shaft I52 caused by the weight of the handle bar I53 and the weight of the arms I6I is sufficient to cause the members I54 to frictionally engage the members I55 to clamp the receptacle I40 in position. In order to adjust the receptacle I45 along the guideways I53, the handle bar I53 is raised to the adjusting position shown in Fig. 12, in which the clamping members I54 are removed from the member I55, and the receptacle I45 is adjusted to any position along the guideway I53 in accordance with the size of the documents being inserted into the machine. When the handle bar I53 is lowered, it will again come to rest in the previous position to clamp the receptacle I55 to the guideway I53.
In Figs. 15 through 19, a second embodiment for a receptacle is disclosed in which the receptacle is displaced to one side in the recess I2 and is smaller than the one described heretofore. The receptacle I'IIJ comprises a receiving portion I 'II and a stacking portion I72, the receiving portion IlI being formed from the plate I73 which also forms the bottom wall of the stacking portion I'IZ. As in the previously described embodiment, the stacking portion comprises side walls II4 and a front wall comprising spaced frame members I'I5 and plastic windows I15. The receptacle IIZI has support members III secured thereto which in turn are secured to the carrier member I13, see Figs. 18 and 19. The carrier member I18 comprises a plate I19 having formed up ends I86 with extending portions I3I which engage theguideway I53 formed by the members I54 and I55 secured to the side walls I52 of the recess I2.
The operating member I55 comprises arms I 82 which are mounted on the ends of the shaft I83 journalled in the carrier member I13 and a handle bar I54 secured between the forward ends of the arms I82. The arms I 82 extend beyond the shaft I83 and have fixed thereto the clamping members I85, see Figs. 16 and 17. The clamping members I85 are provided with an arcuate face I86 which frictionally engages the under surface of the guideway member I54 to clamp the receptacle I'll) in position along the guideway I53 when the handle bar I84 and arms I82 are in the position shown in Fig. 16. To adjust the receptacle I along the guideway I53 with respect to the discharge exit lit, the handle bar I84 is raised to a position as shown in Fig. 17 in which position the arcuate face 188 is removed from the member I55 and the receptacle is free to be adjusted along the guideway. Where the handle is fully released, the turning moment about the shaft I83, due to the weight of the handle bar I83 and the arms I82, is sufficient to cause the arcuate faces I86 of the members I85 to frictionally engage the members I54 to clamp the receptacle I70 in position.
The position of either receptacle along the guideway with respect to the discharge exit H8 will be dependent upon the size of the document being imerted into the machine. If small documents, such as cards or checks are being photographed, the receiving portion will be moved into the machine so that the stacking portion will be relatively close to the discharge exit. On the other hand, if large documents, such as letters or legal documents are being photographed, the stacking portion will have to be moved farther away from the discharge exit with a large receiving portion adjacent the exit.
Other advantages of the film handling and photography apparatus disclosed herein will be obvious to those skilled in the art and modifications of the various elements disclosed to obtain the same advantages will also be apparent. Therefore, the present disclosure is to be construed only in an illustrative sense, and the scope of the invention is defined in the claims which follow.
We claim:
1. A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess with a discharge exit for said documents therein and including a top Wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a photographic station for said documents within said casing, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically into said station and for directing said documents towards said photographic station, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within said casing to an operative position for receiving documents inserted horizontally into said second station and for directing said documents toward said photographic station, a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted when said portion is in the opened position to support said second station in its operative position, a drive means including a plurality of driven rolls and idler rolls between said first and second stations and said photographic station for moving said documents into said photographic station, a drive means for said driven rolls, a guideway for receiving and directing said documents from said photographic station to said discharge exit, a second group of driven rolls and idler rolls for moving said documents through said second guideway, an intermediate drive means for operatively connecting the drive means of said first group of driven rolls to said second group of driven rolls, a document receptacle mounted Within said recess for receiving said discharged documents and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit, support members secured to said document receptacle, a guideway within said recess for receiving and supporting said support member and document receptacle, and a member pivotally mounted on said support member for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit.
2. A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein and including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically therein, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position to an operative position for receiving documents inserted horizontally therein, a guideway common to both the first and second station'and for receiving documents inserted either vertically or horizontally into said respective stations, a document guide member pivotally mount ed on said first station and adapted to be moved to a position for directing documents into said common guideway when said second station is in the operative position and to a, blocking position when said second station is in the inoperative position, an actuating means on said second sta tion for moving said document guide member to its directing position when said second station is moved to its operative position, a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its op erative posit1on, a photographing station Within said casing for said documents including glass flats adapted to be removed from said station, a plurality of rolls adjacent said photographing station for moving said documents from said guideway into said photographing station, a drive means for said rolls, a second guideway provided with a plurality of apertures therein and a discharge exit and for receiving and directing said documents from said photographing station to said discharge exit, a second plurality of rolls having a portion of the peripheries thereof extending through the apertures in said second guideway for contacting and moving said documents through said second guideway, an intermediate drive means arranged around and adjacent one end of said photographing station to permit removal of said glass Ilats and for operatively connecting the drive means for the first plurality of rolls to said second plurality of rolls, a document receptacle including a receiving portion for documents discharged from said exit and a stacking portion for sa1d documents, said receptacle being mounted Within said recess and adJustaple with respect to said discharge exit, support members secured to said document receptacle, a receptacle guideway within said recess for receiving and supporting said support member and receptacle, and an operating member pivotally mounted on said support members for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit.
3. A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein and including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a station on said top wall for accents receiving documents inserted vertically therein, adjustable members on said station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the width of said documents, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within said casing to an operative position for receiving documents inserted horizontally therein, adjustable members on said second station for varying the width of the station in accordance with the width of said documents, a guideway common to both the first and the second stations and for receiving documents inserted either vertically or horizontally into said respective stations, a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its operative position, a photographing station for said vdocuments including glass guides adapted to be removed from said station, a plurality of rolls adjacent said photographing station for moving said documents from said common guideway into said photographing station, a drive means for said rolls, a second guideway provided with a plurality of apertures therein and a discharge exit and for receiving and directing said documents from said photographing station to said discharge exit, a second plurality of rolls having a portion of the peripheries thereof extending through the apertures in said second guideway for contacting and moving said documents through said guideway, an intermediate drive means arranged around and adjacent one end of said photographing station to permit the removal of said glass guides and for operatively connecting the drive means for the first plurality of rolls to said second plurality of rolls, a document receptacle including a receiving portion and a stacking portion for documents discharged from said exit, said receptacle being mounted within said recess and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit, a support member having extending portions thereon and secured to said receptacle, a guideway within said recess for said receptacle including spaced-apart plates adapted to receive the extending portions of said members therebetween, an operating member for said receptacle including arms pivotally connected to said support members With a handle portion therebetween and movable from a clamping, position to an adjusting position, clamping members secured to said arms and adapted to engage said guideway to clamp said receptacle when said operating member is in the clamping position and to be disengaged from said guideway to permit adjustment of said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit when said operating member is in the adjusting position.
4. A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein and including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically therein, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within said casing when said slidable portion of said top wall is in its closed position to an operative position when said slidable portion of said top wall is in its opened position for receiving documents inserted horizontally therein, a guideway common to both the first and second stations and for receiving documents inserted either hori- 12 zontally or vertically into said respective stations, a document guide member pivotally mounted on said first station and adapted to be moved to a position for directing documents into said common guideway when said second station isin the operative position and to a blocking position when said second station is in the inoper ative position, an adjustable actuating means on said second station for moving said document guide member to its directing position when said second station is moved to its operative position; a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second "station in its operative position, a photographing station within said casing for said documents, a plurality of rolls adjacent and above said photographing station including driven rolls on one side of said guideway and idler rolls contacting said driven rolls on the other side of said guideway for moving said documents from said guideway into said photographing station, a drive means for said driven rolls, a second guideway having a discharge exit and for receiving and directing said documents from said photographing station to said discharge exit, a second plurality of rolls including groups of driven rolls operatively connected on one side of said guideway and groups of idler rolls contacting said driven rolls on the other side of said second guideway for moving said documents through said second guideway, an intermediate drive means arranged around and adjacent to one end of said photographing station for operatively connecting the drive means for said first plurality of driven rolls to said second plurality of driven rolls, a document receptacle including a receiving portion for documents discharged from said exit, said receptacle being mounted within said recess and adjustable with respect to said exit, support members having extending portions thereon and secured to said document receptacle, a guideway within said recess for said receptacle including spaced-apart plates adapted to receive the extending portions of said support members therebetween, and an operating member pivotally mounted on said support members for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit.
5. A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein and including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically therein, adjustable members slidably mounted on said station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the width of said documents, a second "station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position Within said casing when the slidable portion of said top wall is closed to an operative position when the slidable portion of said top wall is in itsopened position for receiving documents inserted horizontally into said second station, adjustable members slidably mounted on said second station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the width of said documents, a guideway common to both the first and second stations and for receiving documents inserted either vertically or horizontally into said respective stations, '2. document guide member pivotally mounted on said first station and adapted to be moved to a position for directing documents into said common guideway when said second station is in the operative position, an actuating means on said second station for moving said document guide member to its directing position when said second station is moved to its operative position, a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its operative position, a photographing station within said casing for said documents including glass guides adapted to be removed from said station, a plurality of rolls adjacent and above said photographing station including driven rolls on one side of said common guideway and idler rolls resiliently biased into contacting relationship with said driven rolls for moving said documents from said common guideway into said photographic station, a drive means for said driven rolls, a second guideway including two spaced-apart plates having an entrance and a discharge exit for said documents and provided with a plurality of aligned apertures in each plate and for receiving and directing said documents from said photographing station to said discharge exit, second plurality of rolls having a portion of the peripheries thereof extending through the apertures in said plates and including groups of driven rolls operatively connected on one side of said guideway and groups of idler rolls resiliently biased into contacting relationship with said driven rolls on the other side of said guideway for moving said documents between said plates to the discharge exit, an intermediate drive means arranged around and adjacent to one end of said photographing station and including a drive member located above said photographing station and integral with the driven rolls of the first plurality of rolls, an idler member and a second drive member mounted to one side of said photographing station, a driven member located below said photographing station and integral with the first driven group of said second plurality of rolls, an endless drive member encircling said first drive member, said idler member, and said driven member, a second driven member integral with the second group of said second plurality of rolls, a second endless drive member encircling said second drive member and said second driven member to permit removal of said glass guides and for operatively connecting the drive means for the first plurality of rolls to the second plurality of rolls, a document receptacle including a receiving portion and a stacking portion for documents discharged from said exit, said receptacle being mounted within said recess and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit, support members having extending portions thereon and secured to said document receptacle, a guideway within said recess including spaced-apart plates adapted to receive the extending portions of said support members thereb'etween, an operating member for said receptacle including arms pivotally connected to said support members with a handle portion therebetween and movable from a clamping position to an adjusting position, and clamping members secured to said arms and adapted to engage said guideway to clamp said receptacle when said operating member is in the clamping position and to be disengaged from said guideway to permit adjustment of said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit when said operating member is in the adjusting position.
6. A machine for handling documents comprising a casing for said machine and including a top wall having a document feeding station thereon and provided with a guideway for said documents, a photographing station within said casing for said documents, a plurality of rolls adjacent and above said photographing station including driven rolls on one side of said guideway and idler rolls contacting said driven rolls on the other side of said guideway for moving said documents from said guideway into said photographing station, a drive means for said driven rolls, a second guideway having a discharge exit and for receiving and directing said documents from said photographing station to said discharge exit, a second plurality of rolls including groups of driven rolls operatively connected on one side of said second guideway and groups of idler rolls contacting said driven rolls on the other side of said second guideway for moving said document through said second guideway, and an intermediate drive means arranged around and adjacent one end of said photographing station and in cluding a drive member located above said photographing station and integral with the driven rolls of the first plurality of rolls, an idler member and a second drive member mounted to one side of said photographing station, a driven member located below said photogr-aphing'station and integral with the first driven group of said second plurality of rolls, an endless drive member encircling said first drive member, said idler member, and said driven member, a second driven member integral with the second group of said second plurality of rolls, and a second endless drive member encircling said second drive member and said second driven member for operatively connecting the driving means for said first plurality of driven rolls to the second group of driven rolls in said second plurality of rolls.
7. A machine for handling documents comprising a casing for said machine and including a top wall having a document feeding station thereon and provided with a guideway for said documents, a photographing station within said casing for said documents including glass guides adapted to be removed from said station, a plurality of rolls adjacent and above said photographing station including driven rolls on one side of said guideway and idler rolls resiliently biased into contacting relationship with said driven rolls for driving said documents from said guideway into said photographing station, a drive means for said driven rolls, a second guideway including two spaced-apart plates having an entrance and discharge exit for said documents and provided with a plurality of aligned apertures in each plate and for receiving and directing said documents from said photographing station to said discharge exit, a second plurality of rolls having a portion of the peripheries thereof extending through the apertures in said plates and including groups of driven rolls operatively connected on one side of said second guideways and groups of idler rolls resiliently biased into contacting relationship with said driven rolls on the other side of said second guideway for moving said documents between said plates to the discharge exit, and an intermediate drive means arranged around and adjacent to one end of said photographing station and including a drive member located above said photographing station and integral with the driven rolls of the first plu-. rality of rolls, andidler. member and a second accents drive'member mounted to one side of saidp'hotographing station, a driven member located below said photographing station and integral with the first driven group of said second plurality of rolls, and end-less drive member encircling said first drive member, said idler member, and said d-r iven member, a second driven member integral with the second group of said second plurality of rolls, and a second endless drive member encircling said second drive member and said second driven member to permit removal of said g lass' guides and for operatively connecting the drive means for the first plurality of rolls to said second plurality'of rolls.

9. A mach'ine for handlingand photographing documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a station on said top Wall for receiving documents inserted vertically therein, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within said casing to an operative position and for receiving documents inserted horizontally therein, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said *sli-dable portion to support said second station in its operative position.
10. A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically therein, a secondstation pivotally mounted on said casing for'movemen't from aninoperative position within said casing when said slidable portion of said top wall is :in its closed position to an operative position when. said slidable portion of said top wall is .in its. opened position and for receiving documents inserted horizontally therein, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and, adapted in the opened position of said slida'ble portion to support said second station inits operative position.

A machine forhandling and photographing documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a station on said top Wall for receiving documents inserted vertically therein, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position to an operative position and for receiving documents inserted horizontally therein, a document guide member pivotally mounted on said first station and adapted to be moved to a position for directing documents when said second station is in the operative position and to ale-locking position when said second station is in the inoperative position, and actuating means on said second-station for moving said document guide member to its directing position when said second station is moved 'to its operative position, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its'operative position.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, :a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically therein, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within "said casing when said slidable portion of said top Wall is'in its closed position to an operative position when said slidable portion of said top Wall is in its opened position and for receiving documents inserted horizontally therein, a document guide member pivotally mounted on said first station and adapted to be moved to a position for directing documents when said second station is in the operative position and to a blocking position When said second station is in the inoperative position, an adjustable actuating means on said second station for moving said document guide member to its directing position when said second station is moved to its operative position, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its operative position.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a photographing station for said documents within said casing, a drive means Within said casing for moving said documents past said photographing station, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted Vertically into said station and for directing said documents to said drive means, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position to an operative position and for receiving documents inserted horizontally into said station and for directing said documents to said drive means, and a support member on the sl-idabl'e portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its operative p0si tion.

A' machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing including a top" Wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a photographing station for said documents within said casing, a drive means Within said casing for moving said documents past said photographing station, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically into said station andfor directing said documents to said drive means, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within said casing to an operative position for receiving documents in sorted horizontally into said station and for directing said documents to said drive means, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a photographing station for said documents within said casing, a drive means Within said casing for moving said documents past said photographing station, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically into saidstation and for directing said documents to said drive means, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within said casing when said slidable portion of said top Wall is closed to an operative position when said slidable portion of said top Wall is in its opened posi tion for receiving documents inserted horizontally into said second station and for directing said documents to said drive means, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top wall and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its-operative position.

A :machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a photographing station for said documents within said casing, a drive means within said casing for moving said documents pasts-aid photographing station, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically into said station :and for directing said documents to said drive means, adjustable members on'said station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the width of said document, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position to an operative position for receiving documents inserted horizontally into said station and for directing said documents to said drive means, adjustable members on said second station for varying the Width of said station in accordance with the width of said document, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of :said slidable portion to support said second station in its operative position.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing including a top wall having a portion thereof slidably mounted on .said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a photographing station :for said documents within said casing, a drive means within said casing for moving said documents past said photographing station, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically into said station and for directingsaid documents to said drive means, adjustable members on said station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the width of said document, a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an "inoperative position within said casing when the slidable portion of said top wall is closed to an operative position when the slidable portion of'said top wall is in its opened position for receiving documents inserted horizontally into said second station and for directing said documents to said drive means, adjustable members on said second station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the width of said documents, and a support member on the slidable portion of ,said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to supp r-i sa d. se on s a ion i i s; pe a ive p s n drive means within said casing for moving said documents past said photographing station, a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically into said station and for directing said documents to said drive means, .a second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative to an operative position for receiving documents 'ins'erted horizontally into said station, a document guide member pivotally mounted on said first station and adapted to be moved to a position for directing documents to said drive means when said second station is in the operative poposition and to a blocking position when said second station is in the inoperative position, fan actuating means on said second station for moving said document guide member to its .dire'ct-' ing position when said second station is moved to its operative position, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support said second station in its operative" po sition.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing including atop wall having a portion thereof .slidably mounted on said casing for movement to a closed and an opened position, a photographing station for said documents within said casing, a drive means within said casing for moving said documents past said photographing station, .a station on said top wall for receiving documents inserted vertically into said station and for directing said documents to said drive means,-ad-
justable members slidably mounted on said station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the width of said documents, a
second station pivotally mounted on said casing for movement from an inoperative position within said casing when the slidable portion of said top Wall is closed to an operative position when the slidable portion of said top wall is in its opened position for receiving decuments inserted horizontally into said econd station, adjustable members slidably mounted on saidsecond station for varying the width of said station in accordance with the Width of :said documents, a document guide member pivotally, mounted to said first station and adapted to be moved to a position for directing document to said drive means when said second station is in the operative position and to a blocking position when said second station is in the inoperative position, an actuating means on said second station for moving said document guide member to its directing position when said second station is movedto its operative position, and a support member on the slidable portion of said top and adapted in the opened position of said slidable portion to support-said second station in its operative position.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein, a feeding means within said casing for "moving said documents and provided with an exit'for discha'r'gingsaid documents into said" recess, a; document recap: table mounted within said recess" for receiving 19 said discharged documents and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit, support members secured to said document receptacle, a guideway within said recess for receiving and supporting said support members and receptacle, and an operating member pivotally mounted on said support members for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein, a feeding means within said casing for moving said documents and provided with an exit for discharging said documents into said recess, a document receptacle including a receiving portion for documents discharged from said exit and a stackingportion for said documents, said receptacle being mounted within said recess and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit, support members secured to said document receptacle, a guideway within said recess for receiving and supporting said support members and receptacle, and an operating member pivotally mounted onsaid support members for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein, a feeding means within said casing for moving said documents and provided with an exit for discharging said documents into said recess, a document receptacle including a receiving portion for documents discharged from said exit and a stacking portion for said documents, said receptacle being mounted within said recess and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit, support members having extending portions thereon and secured to said document receptacle, a guideway within said recess for said receptacle including spaced apart plates adapted to receive the extending portions of said support members therebetween, and an operating member pivotally mounted on said supportmembers for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein, a feeding means within said casing for moving said documents and provided with an exit for discharging said documents into said recess, a document receptacle including a receiving portion for documents discharged from said exit and a stacking portion for said documents, said receptacle being mounted Within said recess and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit, support members having extending portions thereon and secured to said document receptacle, a guideway within said recess for said receptacle including spaced apart plates adapted to receive the extending portions of said support members therebetween, an operating member for said receptacle including-arms pivotally connected to said support members with a handle portion therebetween and movable from a clamping position to an adjusting position, clamping members secured to said arms and adapted to engage said guideway to clamp said receptacle when said operating member is inthe clamping position and to be disengaged fromsaidguideway to permit adjustment of said receptacle along said guideway with respect to said discharge exit when said operating member is in the adjusting position.

A machine for handling and photographing documents comprising a casing for said machine having a recess therein, a feeding means within said casing for moving said documents and provided with an exit for discharging said docu ments into said recess, a document receptacle mounted within said recess for receiving said d ischarged documents and adjustable with respect' to said discharge exit, a guideway within said recess for said receptacle, a carrier member for' said receptacle adapted to engage said guideway, support members for said receptacle se cured to said carrier member and to said receptacle, and an operating member pivotally mounted on said carrier member for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guide-' way with respect to said discharge exit.

A machine for handling and photographing i documents comprising a casing for saidmachine" having a recess therein, a feeding means within said casing for moving said documents and provided with an exit for discharging said documents into said recess, a document receptacle within said recess including a receiving portion for documents discharged from said exitand a stacking portion for said documents and adjustable with respect to said discharge exit,sup-
port members for said document receptacle secured to the receiving portion of said receptacle,
a carrier member for said support members and having extending portions thereon, a guidewaywithin said recess for said receptacle and including spaced-apart plates mounted on theside walls of said recess and adapted to receive-the extending portions of said carrier member therebetween, and an operating member for said receptacle pivotally mounted on said carrier mom-f ber for adjusting and clamping said receptacle along said guideway with respect to "said dis-" charge exit. 7
