4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for printing erected cartons.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a machine for printing erected cartons which may be used in connection with a machine for erecting cartons to indicate contents, dating or the like as they are conveyed from the erecting machine.
Second, to provide a machine having these advantages which is simple and compact and enables the rapid changing of type for printing the desired indicia on a carton to indicate its contents.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is automatic in its operation, all that is required of the operator is the changing of typeas desired and adjustment of the type holder and inking pad for particular type used.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated-in the accompanying dfrawings, in which:

The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a suitable frame designated generally by the numeral I. The conveyor, only portions of which are illustrated, comprises way members22 disposed in spaced relation to provide a longitudinal slot 3. The way is provided with a rear side member 4 and front side member 5, the front side member having an opening 6 therein. In the embodiment illustrated the way and side members are formed of angle members facing inwardly and upwardly. The cartons designated generally by the numeral 1 are translated along the conveyor by means of flights 8 carried by the chain 9, the operative reach of which is supported by the bar It. The details of the conveyor form no part of my present invention and are therefore not further illustrated.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is adapted for use in connection with a carton erecting machine, not illustrated, which erects the cartons to the position shown in Fig. 6 with the cover open and delivers the cartons to the conveyor which is driven with a step by step movement. This driving means is not illustrated but a suitable step by step movement may be provided by an interposition of a Geneva gear in the driving connections.
The contents of the cartons may vary, for example the pies in a days run or production may have several kinds of fillers and the cartons cannot practically be previously printed to indicate such fillers. The same is true as to the character of cakes and other goods that may be packaged. To meet this condition I provide a type holder or printing element 5 2 adapted to receive a printing block l2. The holder H is pivotally mounted at I3 on the swinging end of the arm M which is pivotally mounted at 55 and provided with a lateral extension It to which the link [7 is pivotally connected.
The link I! is pivotally connected to the rocker arm l8 which is in turn pivoted at is and provided with a roller follower 2i coacting with the cam 21 on the driving shaft 22. The driving means for this shaft are not illustrated. The conveyor is preferably driven from this same shaft. The arm M carries a threaded stop 23 with which the type holder coacts when the type holder is in printing position as shown in Fig. 4. The coil spring 2% is connected to the type holder below its pivot and acts to bias the type holder against this stop and also against the cam 25 which is positioned to engage the holder when it is in retracted position to present the type to the inking pad 26. The holder is provided with a cam portion 21 coacting with the cam 25. With this arrangement as the type holder is carried rearwardly by the supporting arm Hi it is brought into engagement with the cam 25 which tilts or swings it upwardly against the tension of the spring 24 and into engagement with the inking pad. As the arm swings forwardly the spring 24 swings the holder against the stop 23 to printing position.
The pad 25 is desirably cylindrical as illustrated and is mounted on a spindle 28 for rotative adjustment thereon, being secured in its adjusted positions by means of the thumbscrew 29. The spindle has an eccentric portion 30 engaged in the supporting bracket 3! which is split and provided with a clamping screw 32 for securing the spindle in its adjusted position. With this arrangement the inking pad may be adjusted to properly coact with the particular type mounted in the holder and to present all the surface thereof.
To support the Wall of the carton while being printed I provide the platen 33 carried by the angled arm 34 pivoted at 35 on the bracket 3! and with its angled portion projecting downwardly and offset at 3B, the platen being mounted on the offset which permits the platen being swun into and out of the carton as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 3. The platen carrying arm 34 is connected by the link 3'! to the rocker arm 33 pivoted at 39 and provided with a cam follower 40 coacting with the cam ll on the shaft 7 22. The cams 2| and H are designed to simultaneously actuate the platen and the type holder to printing position. The single spring d2 connecting the rocker arms 88 and 38 urges their followers against their actuating cams.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is a highly practical commercial embodiment and as stated is designed to be used in ccnnection with a box setting up machine.
I have not attempted to illustrate and describe other embodiments or adaptations of my invention as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters l-atent is:
1. The combination with a conveyor comprising a slideway provided with side members, the front I side member having an opening therein, means for translating cartons along the way to successively position the cartons opposite said opening, a type holder, an arm having a fixed pivotal mounting at the front of said slideway and swingable in a plane normal to said opening and on the swingin end of which said type holder is pivotally mounted, an adjustable stop carried by the inner side of arm relative to said slideway to coaot with said type holder, a spring acting to bias said type holder towards said stop, an inking pad positioned in radially spaced relation to the swinging end of said arm, a fixed cam positioned to engage said type holder on the retracting stroke of said holder supporting arm whereby the holder is swan outwardly of the arm and the type carried by the holder is presented to the inking pad, a platen, a swingably mounted supporting arm for said platen pivoted in a transverse plane alongside of said slideway and having a hooked end on which said platen is carried and adapted to position platen on the inner side of the wall of a carton in opposition to the said opening in the conveyor side member, the type holder being positioned to present type through said openin in opposition to the platen, and means for actuating said type holder and platen arms in synchrcnism.
2. The combination with a conveyor comprising a slideway provided with side members, the front side member having an opening therein, means 150! translating cartons alone the way to successively position the cartons opposite said opening, a type holder, an arm having a fixed pivotal mounting at the front of said slideway and swingable in a plane normal to said opening and on the swinging end of which said type holder is pivotally mounted, a spring acting to bias said type holder towards the inner side of said stop relative to said slideway, an inking pad positioned in radially spaced relation to the swinging end of said arm, a fixed cam positioned to engage said type holder on theretracting stroke of said holder supporting arm whereby the holder is swung outwardly of the arm and the type carried by the holder is presented to the inking pad, a
platen, a swingably mounted supporting arm for said platen pivoted in a transverse plane alongside of said slideway and having a hooked end on which said platen is carried and adapted to position the platen on the inner side of the wall of a carton inopposition to the said opening in the conveyor side member, the type holder being positioned to present type through said opening in opposition to the platen, and means for actuating said type holder and platen arms in synchronism.
3. The combination with a conveyor comprising a slideway provided with side members, the front side'member havin an opening therein, means for translating cartons along the way to successively position the cartons opposite said opening, a type holder, an arm having a fixed pivotal mounting at the front of said slideway and swingable in a plane normal to said opening and on the swinging end of which said type holder is pivotally mounted, an adjustable stop carried by said arm to coact with said type holder, a spring acting to bias said type holder towards said stop, an inking pad positioned in radially spaced relation to the swinging end of said arm, a fixed cam positioned to engage said type holder on the retracting stroke of said holder supporting arm whereby the holder is swung outwardly of the arm and the type carried by the holder is presented to the inking pad.
4-. The combination of a slideway adapted to have cartons translated therealong, a type holder, an arm having a fixed pivotal mounting at the front of said slideway and swingable in a plane normal thereto and on which said type holder is pivotally mounted to present type carried thereby to a side of said cartons, a spring acting to bias said type holder towards said an inking pad positioned in radially spaced relation to the swinging end of said arm, a cam positioned to engage said type holder on the retracting stroke of said holder supporting arm whereby the holder is swung outwardly of the arm and the type carried by the holder is presented to the inking pad, a platen, an angled supporting arm pivoted in a transverse plane alongside of said slideway and terminating in a forwardly offset portion at its swingin end to which said platen is secured to facilitate the platen entering an open carton and engaging the inside of the front wall thereof in opposition to the type holder, and means for actuating said type holder and platen arms in synchronism.
