The guide opening between the bars 21 and also between the guide plates -27 is divided by a partition v28 into two sep arate passages 27 and 27 as shown more clearly in Figures 1 and 7, the leftha-nd passage being adapted to receive the type carrier 20-, Figure 10, while the righthand passage serves to receive the type carrier -2l, Figure 11. I
The lefthand passage 27 is open at the bottom to permit the passage of the lower end of the type carrier 20* therethrough but the passage 27" for the carrier -21- is preferably closed at the bottom to form astop 29- for engaging the lower end of thecarrier 21 and limiting the downward movement thereof, see F igure, 11.
This stop 29 is formed by uniting the lower edges of the guide plates 27 across the intervening passage 27". The upper end of the partition 2 8 is secured to T and between the guide rods 24l' and-ex-- tends downwardly therefrom to a point slightly above the stop 29 shown in Figure 7, and also assists in guiding the type plate ,20 in its vertical movement.
A similar partition or outer end guide 28" is secured at its upperend to the guide rods24 to extend downwardly therefrom between the guide plates *27 and together with the partition .28 assist in guiding f the carrier v-21 infits vertical movements inthe passage 27-. 7 Q 7.
The guide passage 2 for the type carrier 20 is of approximately the same width as the portion of the type carrier passtherethrough while the passage 27 for thetype carrier 21 is considerably wider-than the passage '27 and corresponds approximately to thewidth ofthe carrier ,21 which, in this instance, is of about the same width as the cards -a and '-'a to be printed for convenience-of manufacture of the cards andcarrier 2l.
The lid 2 is provided with additional guic le members 30,secured toand projecting upwardlyfroni the upper face of the lid in spaced relation to the lefthand end bracket 25 a distance corresponding approximately to the width of the cards a and -a to be printed, said guide members being located at the outer sides of and adjacent the guide rods 2 lto cooperate with the lefthand bracket 25, Figure 1, for guiding the cards a and a' in their vertical movements through the corresponding portion of the guide opening -26, said cards being inserted through the openings across the outer faces of the rods -24- as shown in Figures 10 and 11.
The type carrier 20 is preferably made of sheet metal and is provided with a length wise o enin 22 therethrou h ofwith P e g plate will beengaged with a stop shoulder 22, Figure 7 to cooperate with the upper wall ofthe opening -22- for holding the type plates against vertical displacement.
These type plates are preferably made of thin type meta-l having date type embossed thereon for making corresponding impressions upon the cards 'a and a when the latter are placed in position for printing and the jaws -7 and 7- are brought to their printing positions, said type plates being sufficiently resilient to permit the lower plate to be sprung out of engagement with the stop 22 when it is desired to remove the plates from the guides 31 by endwise displacement after which the removed plates may be replaced by other type plates bearing different dates.
In order that both cards a and a may be printed simultaneously each type plate -22- is provided with two'rows of similar type, one above the other and enibossed in opposite directions so that when the jaws 7- and -7 are brought to their printing positions corresponding impressions will be made upon outer faces of both cards.
The type plate 23 of the carrier 21 is made of thin type metal and secured in an opening in said carrier in a manner somewhat similar to that shown in my pending applieation,.Serial Nd 394,530, filed September 23, 1929, said plate 23 being provided with two rows of type arranged one above the other and embossed in opposite directions sso'asyto produce simultaneous impressions to their printing positions, these latter im presslons bein g I made "simultaneously with i those from the type plate -22f during :th

6? through the opening-16 in thejlid -2- vO'ar/r'distop and 201M072, mechanism The cards a and .a" are fed by hand into "the machine from the stop downwardly until their lower edges engage an abutment l6 onthe inner end of a plunger 4:7 which is reciprocally movable in a guide opening -48 in the block 34.- transversely of the path of movement of the cards by and against the action of a retracting spring 49 shown more clearly in Figure 8, the abutment 4E6 being formed by cutting away the upper portion of the inner end of the plunger &7- thereby forming what may be termed a punch member 50 adapted to cut away corresponding portions of the lower lefthand edge of the cards at each inward movement of the plunger to enable the "cards to be advanced one type line space after each punching operation on the same -co-action in removing the adjacent parts of the cards.
The punching operation of the plunger -4:7- is preferably controlled by one of the platen jaws as 7 and for this purpose said plunger normally extends rearward-1y beyond the block 3& and is adapted to be engaged by a roller i7" on the upper rear edge of the jaw 7- so that at each forward movement of the j aw 7 to its printing position a corresponding movement will be transmitted by said roller 47 to the plunger 47 for effecting the cutting of the adjacent portions of the cards aand a-, the roller -47 being shown by full lines in Figure 8 and by dotted lines in Figures 5 ,and9.
The rear endof the plunger 4c7. isprovided with an upwardly extending radial pin 4 8 having its upper end adapted tointermittingly and automatically operate a feeding mechanism for the inking ribbon at each outward movement of the plunger in a manner hereinafter more fully described.
This punch and die 51 are located ad'- j acent the lefthand edges of the cards so that when the cards are punched the remaining portions thereof will be free to move down wardly at the inside of the punch and die as requiredvfor eifecting successive removals of portions of the adjacent edges of the cards in orderto permit'successive impressions of the type of both of the carriers -20 and 21 to be made simultaneously on the cards in transverse alinement and in sequence from the bottom upwardly.

A holding pawl 68 is mounted upon a relatively short post 69e-on the lid 2 for engaging the teeth ofthe ratchet wheel and holding the latter against reverse movement. In order thatthe cards and amaybe properly alined with the printing mechanism wheninserted in-themachine the lefthand edges of said cards are yielding-1y held against the correspondingguide mem bers 25' by yieldingabutinents l iadaptedtoeng age the righthand edges of the cards as shown more clearly in Figures 5 a and 6, each abutment being provided with an outwardly projecting stem 75', guided 1n stop openings in a-housing'76 which is secured to the undersideofi the -lid%2 springs 'Z7, surrounding their respective stems shown more clearly in Figure. 6. The guide v open ng for the plunger 47. is open at. its viipnt end t o-permit the dischargeof the punched out portion of the cards into a suitable receptacle which is mounted within the base -1 directly under the front end of the guide, opening as shown mor clearly in Figures 8, 9 and 10, said receptacle being removable to permit the waste to be dumped when desired.
Operation The operation briefly described is as follows v ti've positions after which the type carriers 20 and 2l will be placed in operative position within their respective guides, the
carrier 20 being in its extreme down position thereby" rocking the hand lever 37 to its extreme rearward position shown in Figure 1.
This latter operation brings the uppermost typeplate -22 into registration with the platens l1- while the type plates 23 on the carrier 2l will be registered with the platen sections l1.
The cards '-a and a are then inserted into the machine as illustrated in Figures 10 and 11 until limited by'the engagement of their-lower ends with the abutment '4-6 whereupon the hand lever 19 will be drawn forwardly and downwardly :tor bringing the platen jaws into printing co-action with said type plates for impressing the registering rows of type upon v said cards near the lower edges thereof and at the same time the forward movement of the jaw -7 will cause its roller -47 to engage and operate the plunger 47 for cutting away portions of the lower lefthand edges of the cards and permitting said cards to be advanced by hand into the machine a distance corresponding to the cut away por tions ready for another printing operation in a line directly above that'previously made.
These printing and cutting operations may be repeated as often as desired until practically one-half of the length of the card is printed after which the cards may be reversed end for end and the printing and cutting operations repeated on the remaining halves of the cards it being understood that each printing'operation impresses the iden V tificationcharacters and dates in ahnement upon corresponding portions of both cards.

This first dating impression made upon the cards maybethe date of issue or the date of return of the article to or from the borrower. a

7 When the carrier- 20 is withdrawn in the manner justj describedthe plates 22' may be removed from the bottom downwardly and replaced by other platesafter which the carrier +20+- with the other plates there in may be replaced withinthemachine by i simply pressing the same downwardly which will automatically return the lever +37 9 to its starting position, itbeing understood that when the lid is closed and the lever 3'? restored to its first position the lock- "ing member -44 will be adjusted in its keeper 6 to lock the lid against opening movement. V I V V The carrier 21 for the type plate 23-+"is preferablymade offcardboard of "about the same-size and form as the cards I 'a-" and a"' and-1s retained in the public library: for identification of a particular borrower to be used in the machine for impressing u'ponthe cards 'a and V-'ct "the identification character'of that particular borrower ,opposite the date of issue orireturn of the borrowed article.
That isythe public librarycarries in stock a'considerable number of different identifiration type plates 23 so that one may be issued foreachborrower to be retained in the library aft-erea chfluse.
Ittherefore follows that if the type plates '-23"are' made removable from the carrier; v -21 different type plates may be used with the same carrier while on theother hand if thetype plates are fastened permanentlyto the carrier a corresponding number o-fcarriers' 'will have to'be issued and retained-in.

Upon the issue of the book to the borrower another card as 'a is stamped in the machine with the borrowers identification character and date of issueand then' placed in the pocket of the book to be retained therein until the return at which time it is again stamped with the date of return and'identificationcharacter' of that borrower to be used in the issue of otherbooksto the same'bon The operation of the fother parts of the,
machine havecbeen fully explained in the means for-guiding acardkto be printedbe tween the type of said carrier and one of the "platens a second type carrier slidable at will to and from aposition between said card and platens, and means for bringing the vplatens intoprinting co action with the type of both carriers for impressing saidftype upon the card".

5. .In a printing machine of the character described, a type carrier, a type-plate mounted on the carrier and provided with separate rows of type embossed therefrom in opposite directions, means for positioning separate cards to be printed across opposite faces of said type-plate to receive impressions of the type, and means for pressing said cards into printing co-action with the adjacent rows of type, said type carrier and cards being separately slidable at will to and from their printing positions,

In a printing machine of the character described, a type carrier, a type-plate mounted on the carrier and provided with separate rows of type embossed therefrom 1n opposite directions, means for positioning sepa-- rate cards to be printed across opposite faces of said type-plate to receive impressions of the type, means for pressing said cards into printing co-action with the adjacent rows of type, and means between oppositely embossed type andthe-adjacent cards for transferring impressions of the type onto thecorresponding cards. 7

In a printing machine of the character described, a housing comprising a base section, a lid section, cooperative platens mounted upon the base section in normally spaced relation, a type-plate carrier. mounted on the lid section and movable therewith into and independent movementof the carrier, means for guiding a card to be printed across the face of the type, and means for bringing the a position, and a lid-locking means controlled guides, each type-plate having embossed type projecting from opposite sides thereof in different lines,means for guiding cards to be printed across opposite faces of the typepl'ates, and means for bringing the cards and type-plates into pressing co-action with the type-plates.

In a print-ing'machine of the character descril' ed, a housing having a lid, a guide along which the card to be printed is adapted to be fed into the machine, means including a type carrier for makin impressions upon the card, said type carrier having a plurality of rows of type arranged in sequence lengthwise of the guide, means for adjusting said carrier to present different rows of type to the printing point, and means controlled by the carrier-adjustingmeans for locking and releasing the lid in and from its closed position. In a printing machine of the character described, a housing having a hinged lid adapted to be opened and closed, a typecarrier slidable in a guide opening in the lid and provided witha plurality of type-plates arranged edge to edge thereon, a platen movable into and out of printing co-action with the type of one of the plates, and means for adjusting the type-carrier along its guide to present different type-plates to the printing position, said lid having a card guide for directing the card to be printed between the type-plates and platen. 12. In a printing machine of the character described, a housing having a hinged lid adapted to be opened and closed, a typecarrier slidable in a guide opening in the lid and provided with a plurality of type-plates arranged edge to edge thereon, a platen movable into and out of printing co-action with the type of one of the plates, and means for adjusting the type-carrier along its guide to present different type-plates to the printing position, said lid having a card guide for directing the card to be printed between the type-plates and platen, and an additional type carrier slidable in a second guide opening in the lid and having its type in overlapping relation to the first-named card guide to cooperate with the platen for impressing its type upon the card.

In a printing machine of the character described, a housing having a hinged lid adapted to open and close, a printing couple including a type carrier slidable in a guide opening in the lid and having a plurality of type arranged in sequence thereon, means operable at will for adjusting the carrier endwise to bring different type to the printing housing having itstopfwall providedwith an additional guide openingfor 1 directing the :eard toi be; printed across the face of the type on said bar, a inovableplatenfor 1m pressing said oard against the; registering is? type on the bar and means for adjusting said bar endwise to bring different L type into registration With theplaten. y y
