Obviously, this has been time consuming and uneconomical. e

Finally, on the right hand end 12 of the frame it there are two upstanding ears 31 and 32 between which is a slot 33 that receives an outstanding ear 640i the blade 16 and thus guides it downwardly.
The parts abovedescribed are generally similar in con struction and operation to the egg carton hand set-up machine described in Martin Burger Patent No. 2,668,- 482, issued Febraury 9, 1954. With such a machine, it is only necessary to open up an egg carton so that it is in generally tubular condition, with an upstanding, flap, and then to place this carton on the set-up machine 1 and pull the handle downwardly. This will cause a the swingable leaves to swing to upright position, and
to carryjtheegg carton cross partitions also into upright position. ,Also, the blade 16 will descend to tuck the bottom to form the well known \I-bottom carton. There after, upon release of the handle, the spring will return the parts into the rest position, which is the position shown in Fig; l.'
A printing attachment 40 comprises a frame 41 that is attached to an end 12 of the frame 11 of the set-up machine by a pair of bolts 42 that extend through the frame 41 on either side of the end 12 and are anchored in the bar 43. This construction is seen in Fig.2, where there may also be seen the edge of a plate'44 that may be integral with plate 41 and is positioned at right angles thereto, a plate 46 being in turn attached to the plate Patented :Aug. 2,; 1960' 44. Plate 44 carries a forwardly extending pin 47, and plate 46 has secured thereto a downwardly facing ink pad 48, two screws being used to secure the ink pad 48 to the plate 46.
Secured as by soldering or welding'to the frame 41 is a horizontal transversely extending tube 49, this tube serving as-a journal for a shaft 50. The tubed shaft 50 has at its front end an offset portion 51 on which is rotatably carried a type carrier 52 having an integral trip lever 53 that is furcated to provide the furcations 54 and 56 between which extends the pin 47.
In Fig. 5, there may be seen the end 12 of the frame 11, the coil spring 17 and the shaft 13 that is journalled in the end 12. There may also be seen the tube 49 and the back end of the shaft 50, this back end being angled.
Attached to the shaft 13 by an integral collar 57 that may be opened or closed by a wing nut 58 is a lever 59 that extends parallel to the shaft 13, thence outwardly, and finally parallel again to the shaft 13. This lever, which may be referred to as the operating lever, has connected to the free end thereof, 'a spring 55, the'other end of which is connected to the angled back end of the shaft 50. It will be understood that when shaft 13 is rotated, operating lever 59 will also be rotated so that its free end swings in an arc about the axis of the shaft 13.
In operation, and referring first to Figs. and 6, when the handle 21 is moved downwardly the shaft 13 will be rotated and this will move the blade 16 downwardly as well as cause swinging movement of the swingable leaves 28 by virtue of the actuation of lever 23 and cam 34. Simultaneously, operating lever 59 will be moved in an arc from the position shown in Fig. 5 torthat shown in Fig. 6, and it may be seen that once the free end of operating lever 59 has passed on the upper side of a line drawn from the connection of spring 55 with the back end of shaft 50, and the axis of shaft 50 in the tube 49, the pull of the spring can take effect on the left hand side of this line, as seen in Fig. 5, and it will cause the shaft 50 to turn clockwise as seen in Fig. 5 and to thus assume the position shown in Fig. 6.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, when the parts are in the rest position as shown in Fig. 3, the type in the type carrier 52 will be pressed against the ink pad48, and when the tubed shaft 50 is rotated as above described, the ofiset portion 51 will travel in a counterclockwise direction as seen in Figs. 3 and.4 through an arc about the axis of tubed shaft 50. It will be understood that the apparent differences in direction of rotation of tubed shaft 50 are due to the fact that the descriptions of this rotation have been taken from the back and front ends thereof respectively. As the type carrier 52 is moved downwardly and to the right, from the Fig. 3 to the Fig. 4 position, it will be caused to rotate on the oifset portion 51 because of the engage-- ment of the pin 47 with the furcations 54 and'56 of the trip lever 53; this will cause the plane of the type face to move from a position parallel to the surface of the ink pad 48 to a position in which it is parallel to the end cross partition of an egg carton positioned in the hand set-up machines, as is shown in Figs. 4 and 6.
Upon release of handle 21, the spring 17 will cause the shaft 13 to rotate back to the rest position, and this will in turn carry the operating lever 59 from the position shown in Fig. 6 back tothe position shown in Fig. 5, and during this movement the spring 55 will cause tubed shaft 59 to rotate in the opposite direction to that above described and this will in turn return the type carrier 52 to its rest position shown in Fig. 3 wherein the type comes into contact with the surface of ink pad 48 to receive ink therefrom and to thus be ready for the next operation.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided a printing attachment for an egg carton hand set-up machine that may readily be attached to the machine simply by attaching the operating lever 59 to shaft 13 by means of the easily handled collar 57 and wing nut 58, and by attaching the frame 41 by the bolts 42 and bar 43. It may also be seen that the printing attachment may readily use standard rubber type that is readily available and inexpensive and that the parts of the printing attachment are either readily procurable or are made from plates and rods that are readily shaped on a punch press or on a press brake. Hence, it will be understood that these parts are all relatively easy to make and are quite inexpensive. Also, it will be noted that the securing of the printing attachment to the egg carton hand set-up machine requires no modification whatsoever to the machine.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore the invention is not limited to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in-the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination; a machine having a frame, a longitudinally extending operating shaft journalled therein, and means to rotate said shaft including a hand manipulable operating handle; and a printing attachment for said machine comprising a frame secured to the frame of the machine, a tube carried by said frame and ex- 7 V tending transversely of said operating shaft, a shaft in W said tube having the back end thereof angled to form a lever, an operating lever attached at one end to the operating shaft and extending outwardly from said operating shaft and then parallel thereto, a spring connected to the free end of said operating lever and to the angled end of said tubed shaft, whereby upon movement of said handle said tubed shaft will be rotated, the front end of said tubed shaft being offset, a type carrier rotatably mounted on the offset portion of said tubed shaft 7 and having a furcated trip lever integral therewith, a
pin carried by said attachment frame and extending between the furcations of said lever, and an ink pad carried by said attachment frame, said type carrier being carried by said offset portion of said tubed shaft and rotated by said pin upon rotation of said tubed shaft from a rest position in which the type is against the ink pad to a printing position in said machine.

.means for operating said shaft; and a printing attachment for said machine comprising a frame secured to the frame of themachine, a tube carried by said attachment frame and extending transversely of said operating shaft, a shaft in said tube having the back end thereof angled to form a lever, an operating lever attached at one end to the operating shaft and extending outwardly from said operating shaft and then parallel thereto, a spring connected to the free end of said operating lever and to -the angled end of said tubed shaft, whereby upon rotation of said operating shaft said tubed shaft will be r0,- tated, the front end of said tubed shaft being offset, a type carrier rotatably mounted on the offset portion of said tubed shaft and having a furcated trip lever integral therewith, a pin carried by said attachment frame and extending between the furcations of said lever, and an ink pad carried by said attachment frame, said. type carrier being carried by said offset portion of said tubed shaft and rotated by said pin upon rotation of said tubed shaft from a rest position in which the type is against the ink pad to a printing position in which said type strikes against a work piece in positon on said machine.
3. In combination, .a machine having a frame, a longitudinally extending operating shaft journalledtherein;
means for operating said shaft; and a printing attach ment for said machine comprising a frame secured to the frame and extending transversely of said operating shaft, a shaft in said tube, means connected to said operating shaft and said tubed shaft for rotating said tubed shaft upon rotation of said operating. shaft, the front-end of said tubed shaft being offset, a type carrierrotatably mounted on the offset portion of said tubed shaft and having a furcated trip leverintegral therewith, a pin carried bysaid attachment frame and extending between the furcations of said lever, and an ink pad carried by said attachment frame, said type carrier being carried by said offset portion of said tubed shaft and rotated by said pin upon rotation of said tubed shaft from a rest position in which the type is against the ink pad to a printing position in which said type strikes against a work piece in position on said machine.

In combination, a machine having a frame, a longi frame transversely of said operating shaft, means connected to said shafts to cause said attachment shaft to rotate upon rotation of said operating shaft, the front end of said attachment shaft being offset, a type carrier rotatably mounted on the offset portion of said attachment shaft and having afurcated trip lever integral therewith, a pin carried by said attachment frame and extending between the furcations of said lever and an ink pad carried by said attachment frame, said type carrier being carried by said offset portion of said tubed shaft and rotated by said pin upon rotation of said tubed shaft from a rest position in which the type is against the ink pad to a printing position in which said type strikes against a work piece in position on said machine.

In combination; a machine having a frame, a longitudinally extending operating shaft journalled therein; means for operating said shaft; and a printing attachment for said machine comprising a frame secured to the frame of the machine, a tube carried by said attachment 'fra-me'andextending transversely of said operating shaft, a shaft in said tube, having the back end thereof angled to form a lever, an operating lever attached at one end to the operating shaft and extending outwardly from said operating shaft and then parallel thereto, a spring connected to the free end of said operating lever and to the angled endof said tubed shaft, whereby upon. rotation of said operating shaft said tubed shaft will be rotated, the front end of said tubed shaft being offset, a type carrier rotatably mounted on the offset portion of said tubed shaft, an 'ink pad carried by said attachment frame, and means operatively connected to said type carrier to cause said carrier to rotate from a rest position in which the type is against the ink pad to a printing position in which said type strikes against a work piece in position on said machine.

In combination, a machine having a frame, a longitudinally extending oscillatable operating shaft journalled therein; means for operating said shaft; and a printing attachment for said machine comprising a frame offset, a type carrier rotatably mounted on the offset portion of said attachment shaft, an ink pad carried by said attachment frame, and means operatively connected to said type carrier to cause said carrier to rotate from a rest position in which the type is against the ink pad to a printing position in which said type strikes against a work piece in position on said machine.

In combination; a machine having a frame, a longitudinally extending operating shaft journalled therein, and means to rotate said shaft including an operating handle; and a printing attachment for said machine comprising a frame secured to the frame of the machine, a tube carried by said frame and extending transversely of said operating shaft, a shaft in said tube having the back end thereof angled to form a lever, an operating lever attached by an integral split collar at one end thereof to the operating shaft and extending outwardly from said operating shaft and then parallel thereto, a spring connected to the free end of said operating lever and to the angled end of said tubed shaft, whereby upon movement of said handle said tubed shaft will be rotated,
thefront end of said tubed shaft being offset, a type 1 carrier rotatably mounted on the offset portion of said tubed shaft and having a furcated trip lever integral therewith,.a pin carried by said attachment frame and extending between the furcations of said lever, and an ink pad carried by said attachment frame, said type carrier being carried by said offset portion of said tubed shaft and rotated by said pin upon rotation of said tubed shaft from a rest position in which the type is against the ink pad to a printing position on said machine.
