2 Claims.
The invention'relates to bed springs comprising spaced rows of vertical coiled springs of which in a double bedthere are usually nine longitudinal rows. Applicant has had much trouble in sleeping comfortably in a double bed with another occupant much heavier than he is and an object of the invention is to provide means for simultaneously adjusting the tension of all of the vertical coiled springs related to any desired longitudinal area of the bed spring. Another object is to provide such means having a common operating shaft operable from the side of the bed without removal of the bed spring therefrom.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a section on the line |-l, Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the invention as applied, parts being broken away.
Figure 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3, Figure 1, on a larger scale, parts being broken away.
Figure 4 is a detail section on the line 4-4, Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the detachable crank for the operating shafts, one of said operating shafts being shown, partly broken away.
In these drawings, the bed spring is shown as comprising a horizontal rectangular bottom frame I having spaced transverse bars 2 connecting the side rails thereof; a horizontal rectangular top frame 4; a vertically yieldable platform to 5 having spring connections 6 with the side and end rails of said top frame I, and a plurality of spaced longitudinal rows of vertical coiled springs 3 located between said platform top and the transverse bars 2 of said bottom frame, said springs bearing at their upper ends against said platform top 5, all of which is known construction.
The top rectangular frame 4 of the bed spring and the platform top are both supported upon said coiled springs 3. This platform top may consist of a. plurality of longitudinal and transverse spaced bands 5 crossing one another at right angles.
Means are provided for simultaneously adjusting the tension of all of the vertical coiled springs 3 related to any desired longitudinal area of the bed spring comprising a longitudinal bar 1 underlying each longitudinal row of said springs and to which the lower ends of aid springs are connected by engaging perforations thereof and means comprising a plurality of sets of worm gearing supported upon the transverse bars: 2 of said bottom frame and having a common operating shaft for vertically adjusting each longitudinal bar 1. j j
The worm wheel 9 of each set of worm gearing i provided with a central threaded aperture with which a threaded standard 8 is engaged, said standard at its upper end engaging the longi tudinal bar 1. All of the worms II of the plurality of sets of worm gearing for vertically adjusting each longitudinal bar I are provided with a common operating shaft l0 journaled in the end rails of said bottom frame I As shown, a set of worm gearing is provided beneath each vertical coiled spring 3 of the bed spring. It is obvious that the longitudinal bar I underlying each longitudinal row of the vertical coiled springs 3 is capable of being vertically adjusted by the threaded standards 8 related to a lesser number of sets of worm gearing, one set of worm gearing located at each end and one set of worm gearing located in the middle of and below each longitudinal bar being sufficient.
A detachable crank 14 may be used for engagement with the squared ends [5 of any one or' more of the operating shafts [0.
Any suitable means may be provided to limit the adjustment of the vertical coiled springs 3 toward said platform top 5 and to prevent sidesway.
In order to facilitate the use of the operating crank M for rotatably adjusting the shafts [0, any suitable means may be used for raising the foot end portion of a mattress used upon the bed spring and upholding said foot end portion of the mattress out of way while the operating crank I4 is being used. The invention is subject to modifications coming within the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a bed spring having a horizontal rectangular bottom frame provided with spaced transverse bars connecting the side rails thereof, a horizontal rectangular top frame, a vertically yieldable platform top having spring connections with said top frame, and a plurality of spaced longitudinal rows of vertical coiled springs located between said platform top and said transverse bars of the bottom frame and hearing at their upper ends against said platform top; means for simultaneously adjusting the tension of all of the vertical coiled springs related to any desired longitudinal area of the bed spring comprising a longitudinal bar underlying each longitudinal row of said springs and to which the lower ends of said springs are connected, and means comprising a plurality of sets of worm gearing supported upon said transverse bars of the bottom frame and having a common operating shaft for vertically adjusting each longitudinal bar.
2. In bed spring having a horizontal rectangular bottom frame provided with spaced transverse bars connecting the side rails thereof, a horizontal rectangular top frame, a vertically yieldable platform top having spring connections with said top frame, and a plurality of spaced longitudinal rows of ertical coiled springs located between said platform top and said transverse bars of the bottom frame and bearing at their upper ends against said platform top; means for simultaneously adjusting the tension of all of the vertical coiled springs related to any desired longitudinal area of the bed spring comprising a longitudinal bar underlying each longitudinal row of said springs and to which the lower ends of said springs are connected, and means comprising a plurality of sets of worm gearing supported upon said transverse bars of the bottom frame for vertically adjusting each longitudinal bar, the worm wheel of each of said sets having a central threaded aperture, and a 4 threaded standard engaging said aperture, said standard at its upper end engaging said longitudinal bar, all of the worms of said plurality of sets of worm gearing for vertically adjusting each longitudinal bar having a common operating shaft.
CLYDE B. REESE.
