My present invention relates to awnings for windows and more particularly to awnings which may be attached to window screen frames and left thereon when the screens are taken down for the winter. Among the objects of this invention are the provision of an inexpensive awning of the type indicated; the provision of an awning which can be easily and inexpensively fabricated; and such further objects, advantages, and capabilities as will hereafter appear and as are inherent in the construction disclosed herein. My invention further resides in the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and, while I have shown therein what is now regarded as the preferred embodiment of this invention, I desire the same to be understood as illustrative only and not to be interpreted in a limiting sense.
In the drawings annexed hereto and forming a part hereof,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of an awning in accordance with my present invention, the same being shown attached to the frame of a window screen;
Fig. 2 represents a sectional elevation substantially along the plane indicated by the line 2-2, F '1;
Fig. 3 represents a section approximately along the plane indicated by the line 2-2, Fig. 1, with the awning let down over the screen;
Fig. 4 represents a fragmentary portion of the structure shown in Fig. 2 on a larger scale; and
Fig. 5 represents a transverse section substantially along the plane indicated by the line 5-5, Fig. 3.
Reference will now be made in greater detail to the annexed drawings for a more complete description of this invention. This awning is adapted to be attached to the framework of a window screen and comprises a plurality of raft- .ers 2, metal slats 3, props 4, and brackets 5 and 8 which hold the body of the awning connected to the frame I. The rafters 2 and brackets 6 are pivotally connected, as shown at 1. By a comparison of Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that, when the brackets 5 are disconnected from the frame I and the props 4 are turned about their pivots B in a vertical direction, the body of the awning will no longer be held in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2, but can be dropped down into the position shown in Fig. 3. In this position, the screen, of which frame I forms a part, can be taken out and carried away to a storage space where it can be kept for the winter.
Fig. 4 shows in greater detail the construction of the awning body, and from this it will be seen that the slats '3 have wide flanges 9 formed along one longitudinal edge and narrow flanges I0 along the other longitudinal edge. The rafters 2 have notches formed therein for the reception of the flanges which are inserted into these notches in pairs, the narrow flange in any given notch occupying the lower and the wide flange the upper position in the notch. The result of this is that the upper surface of the awning has 2 a stepped appearance, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. Along the sides and bottom edge of the awning are scalloped strips of metal II which give an ornamental appearance to the awning.
It is of course understood that the specific description of structure set forth above may be departed from without departing from the spirit of this invention as disclosed in the foregoing specification and as defined in the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. A foldable awning construction for permanent association with a screen or other detachable frame, said awning construction comprising a pair of rafters, awning slats carried thereby, scalloped strips affixed in approximately vertically depending relation to each of said rafters and along the bottom edge of the awning, a pair of pivot brackets attachable to said detachable screen or frame, each including a portion extending laterally outwardly therefrom a substantial distance, means pivoting the upper ends of said rafters to the laterally outwardly extending portions of said brackets, a pair of props pivotally connected at their outer ends to the lower ends of said rafters, each prop being swingable upwardly into a position alongside its associated rafter, and means attachable to said screen or frame and carried by the inner ends of said props for holding the latter in position, said outwardly extending bracket portions being of sufficient length, relative to the width of said scalloped strips that, when said props are folded upwardly alongside of said rafters, the latter, together with said awning slats and said scalloped strips, may be folded substantially flat against said screen or frame without damage to said scalloped strips.
2. A foldable awning construction as defined by claim 1 in which the detachable means, receiving the inner ends of said props, comprise bracket means afiixed to the inner ends of said props and having such length that, when the awning is folded against said screen or frame, said prop brackets serve to hold the latter substantially alongside said rafters.
