This invention relates to a clip preferably for use in fastening clothes on a line or the like, and more particularly to the manner of forming such clip.
The main object of this invention is to provide a clip for the aforesaid purpose, formed by a single piece of wire.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood and readily carried out, a preferred embodiment thereof has been illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the clip of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof and Fig. 4 is a plan view of said clip, extended on a plane surface, in one of the manufacturing steps prior to the formation of the jaws thereof.
The same reference characters are used to indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
As shown in the drawings, the clip of this invention is formed by two arms a, and 22 arranged to intersect each other, two ends of said arms forming a pair of jaws a and b respectively, yieldingly pressed against each other by means of a spring c joining together the other two ends of the arms a and b.
The assembly of the components mentioned above, 1. e., the arms a and b and the spring are all formed of a single piece of resilient steel Wire. The intermediate portion of said wire is wound into a coil l constituting the spring c, whereas one of the end portions thereof forms the arm a and the other end portion forms the arm b. The end portion forming the arm a is shaped into a rectangle the major sides 2a of which are perpendicular to the axis of said coil 1, constituting the sides of the arm a, while the minor side 3a remote from the spring 0 forms the end of said arm, extending transversely between the sides 2a. The free end of said end portion of the wire corresponding to the arm forms the minor side to of the rectangle and is arranged longitudinally within the spring 0, entering same through the end opposite that from which said wire end portion extends.
The arm I) is formed in the same manner as the arm a, excepting that the width thereof is not uniform throughout its length. In fact, near the spring 0 each of the sides 2b thereof forms a double right-angled elbow 2b the two elbows being opposite each other, whereby the spacing between the sides 2b from the end 3b of the arm to said elbows will be smaller than the separation between the latter and the spring c, and also smaller than the spacing from the sides 2 a of arm a, so that the arm b may be arranged across and through the latter, between the sides 2a thereof (see Figs. 1 to 3).
The arm b extends through the arm a between the sides 2a of the latter, with the end portion of the former comprising the end 31) and the ends of the sides 22) adjacent the latter, curved with the concavity facing the end portion of arm a, which end portion of arm a is formed in the same manner as that of arm b, but bent at right angle towards the latter (see Fig. 3) so as to face same. The said end portions of arms a and b constitute the jaws a and b respectively, which through the action of said spring 0 and due to the arrangement described above of one arm with respect to the other, are yieldingly pressed towards each other.
In order to open said jaws, the portion of arm 22 adjacent the spring c is curved in a direction opposite that of the curve at the end portion thereof, with the concavity thereof facing the arm a, thereby providing a space capable of allowing the movement of one arm towards the other by pressing simultaneously on both in opposite directions and against the action of spring 0, as indicated by arrows A, so as to move the jaws away from each other and allow the insertion between said jaws of the article to be gripped thereby.
It is obvious that the shape of the end portions of arms a and b forming the jaws a and b may vary widely, depending on the use for which the clip is intended.
It is also evident that in carrying out this invention, several modifications, changes and/or alterations will occur to those skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the invention as clearly set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A clip formed of spring wire and comprising a helical spring, first and second arms extending divergingly from said spring and being urged angularly apart by the latter, said first arm being longer than said second arm and curved longitudinally with its concavity facing toward said second arm to intersect and extend through the latter adjacent its free end, and laterally bent jaws formed on the free ends of said first and second arms and extending toward each other to be urged together by the resilient spreading apart of said arms, said jaws being disposed in confronting relationship to maintain the free end portions of said arms in intersecting relationship and for gripping cloth therebetween.
