TOY MARBLE-SHOOTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,644, dated August 15, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES F. GoNNELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of and Means for Projecting Marbles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable to others skilled in the art to which it appertains 2 5 trated, and finally embodied in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pistol embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of a detached portion; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of 0 the clamp, spring, &c.

In carrying out my invention I construct a spring-clamp, A, of round or flat wire, pro- 3 5 vided with fingers B to receive and hold the marble, the normal tendency of which is to elose gently upon the marble when it is inserted therein, as indicated in Fig. 3.

The body of the spring-clamp is encircled by 0a coiled spring, 0, one end of which presses against a slotted or recessed disk, b, secured in positionat the base of the fingers B by means of a pin, 0, or by any other appropriate means, and the other end against the rear ex- 5 tremity or end, d, of the cylinder D, which incloses said clamp and spring, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. The-said rear end, d, of the cylinder is provided with an aperture or apertures to admit of the free working therethrough of the said clamp, and the latter is provided with a suitable loop or finger piece, a, and a plate, f, rigidly secured therein, having a re-' cess or perforation, s, (see Figs. 1 and 3,) for the purpose hereinafter stated. Said cylinder is secured by means of a band, 01, upon a suitable stock, A, which is provided with a trigger composed of a lever, h, sliding bolt 9, and spring i, clearly shown in Fig. 1. The said bolt is provided with a beveled end, which is arranged to project upward through the stock and engage with the perforation s in the plate f at the proper time, for the purpose hereinafter stated.

The springe' is arranged to encircle said bolt and to be secured thereto at the upper end of the recess in the stock, which forms the housing therefor, the opposite end being supported by suitable pins or projections, 0, whereby the normal tendency of said spring is to hold the bolt into engagement with the said plate f until it is released by pulling back upon the lever h, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. V

The device isdesigned and arranged to operate as follows: A marble is first inserted or pressed between the fingers of the clamp, which is then, with the marble, drawn backward by means of the finger-piece until the perforation or recess in the rigid plate engages with the bolt. The player then takes his aim and pulls the lever, thereby releasing and projecting the marble from the fingers with considerable force.

The clamp, spring, and cylinder may be used independently of the stock and trigger, or the clamp, spring, and parts I) and (1 may be used independently of either the stock, trigger, or cylinder, as will be manifest.

What I claim is- 1. In a marble-projector, the combination, with the hollow cylinder D and stock A, of the sliding clamp A, provided with fingers B, recess or perforation s, finger-piece e, and disk or seat b, a spring, 0, adapted to operate in conjunction with said cylinder and clamp, as described, and the trigger composed of a bolt, lever, and spring, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A marble-projector consisting of a stock, A, cylinder 1), clamp A, provided with seat I), finger-piece e, recess or perforation s, and fingers B, adapted to automatically grasp a marble, a spring, 0, adapted to operate in coned to allow the clamp to be drawn back preparatory to the process of projecting the marble, all substantially as herein set forth.
