  • My invention relates to such advertisements or advertising-bills as have been heretofore distributed on the streets by persons throwing the same in the air. This method does not sufficiently separate the hills so that the wind can distribute them, nor does it especially attract the attention of passers-hy. I overcome these objections by the following device: Between two packages of advertising bills I place a fire-cracker or a package filled with explosive matters. I then bind the whole together by a thin band or string that is easily broken.

'ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,240, dated August 8, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to such advertisements or advertising-bills as have been heretofore distributed on the streets by persons throwing the same in the air. This method does not sufficiently separate the hills so that the wind can distribute them, nor does it especially attract the attention of passers-hy. I overcome these objections by the following device: Between two packages of advertising bills I place a fire-cracker or a package filled with explosive matters. I then bind the whole together by a thin band or string that is easily broken. To give weight to the package in order to throw it high in the air, a stiff cover may be folded around package, or blocks may be placed between the advertising-packages, said blocks to consist either of two pieces about the size of the packages, with a groove to receive fire-crackers, as shown by Figure 2, or to be small blocks at each side of fire-crackers, as shown in Fig. 4. Another method is shown by Fig. 5, where the advertising-bills are simply wrapped around the fire-cracker and held together'by a thin band or string.
Fig. 3 shows a method of inclosing the firecracker and advertising-bills at two sides and one end by a stiff cover, which is fastened together at the other end by a thin band or string or any other manner of fastening that can be easily broken.
Inthe accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2, a vertical section through the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 show a few different ways of arrangin g the parts forming the device.

When the slow match is lighted and the package thrown in the air the explosion of the firecracker will distribute the advertisingbills, at the same time attracting the attention of passers-by.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
