2 Claims.
This invention relates to containers having a body section comprising a bottom panel and side walls and a cover section of similar construction hinged to one wall of the body section, and relates specifically to means for locking the cover to the body.
The principal object of the present `invention is to provide a container comprising a body section with bottom and side walls, and a cover member of similar constructionhinged vtoene of the walls 4of the body section, at least one wall of the cover member being provided with a locking tab, preferably `T-shaped, adapted to be inserted in a recess of similar shape in corresponding walls of the body section, the lower edges of the walls of the cover member being disposed in edgewise abutting relation to the upper edges of the corresponding body section walls, providing walls whose outer faces are in flush alignment in closed and locked position of the box.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lock for a container having a hinged cover with an inverted T-shaped tab depending from the lower edge of an inwardly folded flap of the cover section and overhanging the body section of the container, said tab'being designed to be inserted in a recess of a corresponding T-shape formed and folded over flap of the end wall of the body section and to lie in flush relation to said folded fiap.
vThis container comprises a body section having end walls with recesses therein and a cover section having end walls with tabs thereon which cooperate with said recesses when the cover section is in a closed position.
The invention also consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying my invention with the sections thereof in a partially opened position, and
Fig. 2 is a reduced plan View of the scored die cut blank from which the container is folded.
The body section A comprises a bottom panel I having side walls 2 folded upwardly therefrom along the scores 3, said side Walls 2 having end extensions 4 secured thereto and being adapted to be folded inwardly along the scores 5 so that the ends thereof are in substantially abutting relationship to form an intermediate end wall, and end walls 6 having upper marginal aps 'I thereon, said end Walls 6 being adapted to be folded upwardly along the scores 8 .to liehagainst the outer faces of the end extensions `,Said end wail flaps 1 being adapted ,to `be folded .downf wardly about double scores v9 -,to lie ,flatwise against the inner faces of said end extensions 1i, the free edges I of theend wallflaps 'I being in frictional engagement with the uppersurface of thebottom panel I.
T-shaped recesses orcutouts Ij ,arestrtlckjrgin the upstanding end walls 5. The bases I2 of said T-shaped recesses II extend through the doll-.ble scores ls. Preferably, the recesses LI :have linger notches I3 therein as illustrated in ,the Ydrawings., `but .these notches 1.3 are AQptional and een be Omitted.
The slits I4 and .score I5 divide the plank into two sections of substantially similar .shape `The cover section B `ishineed along A.the .scelte L5 to the body section A. 'Its Yconstructioiiis -subfstantially a counterpart of the hereinbefore v described body section A: `that is, the cover sectipp B comprises a top panel AI6 lhaving side walls ,Ijl folded downwardly therefrom along the lscores I8, said side walls `Il 4having end extensions L9 secured thereto and Vbeing adapted to vbe jfolded inwardly along the scores 20 so that the ends thereof are rin substantially abutting Vvrelationship to form an intermediate end wall, and end walls 2I havinglower Amarginal flaps '22 thereon, vsaid end Walls 2| Vbeing nadapted to lbe folded downwardly along -the scores v23 to Vlie against -the outer faces of the end extensions I9, said end wall flaps 22 being adapted to be folded upwardly about double scores 2B to lie against the inner faces of said end extensions I9, the free edges 25 of the end wall aps 22 being in frictional engagement with the lower surface of the top panel I6.
Inverted T-shaped tabs 25 are struck from the end wall flaps 22 on the cover section B. The bases 2l of said tabs 28 extend through the double scores 253, said tabs 26 being in registering relationship with the T-shaped recesses I I in the body section A. Upon closing the cover section B over the body section A, the tabs 28 snap into the recesses II in flush relation to the outer faces of the end walls 6, thereby locking the cover section B to the body section A and forming a continuous and smooth outer side wall face. Preferably, the rounded portions of the T-shaped tabs 2% have finger notches 28 therein as illustrated in the drawings for convenience in releasing said tabs 25 from their locked position, but these notches 222 are optional and can be omitted.
An inner liner D may be inserted in the body section A if desired to hold the end wall aps 1 and 22 in place latwise against the end extensions 4 and I9 of the body and cover section A and cover section B. The liner D adds strength to the container and serves to mask the areas cut out in the end wall aps 22 of the cover section B, thus providing a uniform interior surface free of recesses.
When the package is closed and locked a strip of transparent pressure sensitive or other type of tape may be placed over the tabs 26 if desired.
The container has many practical advantages. It is attractive in appearance, rigid and especially adapted as a gift package for marketing bathtowel sets, blankets, textile specialties, silverware and a variety of other commodities demanding attractive packaging. It is inexpensive, being made from a single blank and is easily and quickly assembled.
The locking device is simple in construction, may be readily released and is effective for packaging materials of the class described. When in locked position the locking tabs 26 are flush with the exterior end walls 6 so that the entire package has a smooth unobstructed exterior face.
The hereinbefore described gift package obviously admits of considerable modification without departing from the scope of the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise arrangements of parts shown and described.
What I claim is:
1. A one-piece folded blank container having flush, unobstructed exterior and interior faces, said container comprising a body section having a rectangular bottom panel with front, back and multi-ply end walls of substantially equal height extending upwardly therefrom and a cover section hinged to the upper edge of the back wall of the body section, said cover section having a cover panel of substantially counterpart dimensions to said bottom panel with front, back, and multi-ply end walls of substantially equal height extending downwardly therefrom, said cover walls being coextensive in length with the corresponding body walls, said front and back walls of the body and cover sections each having end extensions folded inwardly flush with the inner faces of the end walls of the body and cover sections respectively, each of said end walls having upper marginal flaps coextensive in length thereto, said flaps being folded inwardly and downwardly over said front and back wall extensions in flatwise relation thereto with their free edges abutting the bottom and top panels respectively, said outermost ply of one of the end walls of the body section having an inverted rounded T-shaped recess therein extending through the fold of the marginal ap at the upper edge thereof, and said innermost ply of the corresponding end wall of the cover section having struck therefrom a locking tab of similar shape to said recess, said tab being hinged from the lower edge of the outermost ply and adapted to be folded outwardly in parallel relation to said cover end wall and to extend into and substantially fill said recess in said body end wall and releasably lock said cover to said body and thereby form a smooth exterior surface when said container is closed, the edges of the front and end walls of the cover section abutting the edges of the corresponding body walls in the closed position of the container.
2. The combination set forth in claim 1 wherein said container is provided with a rectangular liner in the body section, said liner being in fiatwise relation to the four walls of said body section, the height of said liner being equal to the combined interior depth of the body and cover sections, the free bottom edges of the liner being in abutting relation with the inner face of the body panel and the free top edges thereof being in abutting relation with the inner face of the cover panel in the closed position of the container, said liner forming a smooth unbroken interior surface.
