Description

T. BOYKO HAIR CURLER Nov. 18, 1952 1 Filed March 6, 1952 y MK y m 24 NA m T Patented Nov. 18, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR CURLER Theodore Boyko, Bronx, N. Y. Application March 6, 1952, Serial No. 275,099 I 3 Claims. (01. 1325-41) The present invention relates to improvements in curling devices and, more specifically, to a new and improved device for making permanent waves.
One object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which substantially reduces the time of treatment, so that an average permanent wave job which hitherto required three to four hours can be performed in about one hour, which greatly simplifies the making of permanent waves, and which keeps the locks all around the head until the entire job has been completed.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which allows to set the hair while at the same time and with the same process the permanent wave job is being carried out, and which causes the curls always to look like natural curls.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is easy to apply and to take off, which is light in weight, of a small size, and simple in construction, but which is also durable, sturdy and well adapted for long continued use.
,With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventionconsists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, itbeing understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figur 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 showing the device open.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral 2 denotes a locket casing whose top and bottom portions are formed by plates 4 and 6, which preferably are substantially circular and made of plastic material or the like. The plate 4 has at opposite peripheral sections a pair of recessed outwardly flanged portions 8 adapted for being engaged by a pair of finger members I0, which are provided with knurled or serrated surface portions H and are rightangularly disposed to and extended from margina1 portions of the plate 6. The plates 4 and 6 are connected to each other by any suitable hinging means, preferably by means of a strip I2 of rubber or the like, one end of which is se cured to the plate 4 while its other end is secured to the plate 6 (Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5). From one edge section of the plate 4 intermediate the members In, and pointing in the same direction as the members Ill, there are extended several lug portions 14, which are in spaced relation to each other as well as to the members Ill. Lug portions it, which are rightangularly disposed to the surface of the plate 6 are extended from an edge section of the plate 6 and are adapted for interdigitating engagement with the lug sections I4, when the plates 4 and 6 are in the closed position shown in Figs. 1 to 4. A serrated arcuate member 18 is extended from an edge portion of the plate 4 intermediate the recessed portions 8 and are rightangularly disposed to the surface thereof. That segmental portion of the plate 6 which is opposite the member I8 when the locket 2 is closed is provided with open slots so as to form a row of comb-like teeth portions 20, and a tubular member 22 extends from the center of the plate 6 through an aperture in the plate 4 (Figs. 1 to 3) when the locket 2 is closed. The plate 4 preferably is provided with perforations surrounding said aperture, as may be seen in Fig. 2.
My new and improved device is used in the following manner:
First the hair is wetted with a curling solution in the usual manner. Then strands of hair 28 are curled with the fingers of the operator, or on a stick 24 which has a reduced end portion 26; the latter is inserted into the member 22, which preferably is provided with perforations 30, after the locket 2 has been opened, as shown in Fig. 5. Then the curled hair 28 is pushed from the stick 24 upon the tubular member 22, the hair portion nearest the scalp is passed through the device between the teeth portions 20, and the locket 2 is closed. Since the members H] are somewhat resilient they will engage firmly with their knurled portions II the recessed portions 8, so that the locket 2 will remain closed safely, The hair is left undisturbed in the locket 2 for a period of time as long as the processing solution calls for. Thereafter, and while the hair is still in the locket 2, the hiair is rinsed with water or with a neutralizer, and then the person operated on is placed under a hair drier. When the hair is dry the locket 2 is taken off, and the hair is combed, The
various perforations and openings on the device facilitate a rapid penetration of the hair by water or the neutralizer as well as by the heat during the drying process.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying? drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the followin claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope ofthe invention which as a' matter of language might" be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
