UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH K. ALTERS, OF MAIDEN ROCK, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 6F ONE- HALF TO JOHN H. BRASINGTON, OF SAME PLACE.
MOP-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,801, dated July 25, 1882. Application filed May 8,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOSEPH K. ALTERS, of
' Maiden Rock, in the county of Pierce and State'of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mop-head, showing the clamping-frame open for the insertion of the mop-rag or rope ends; and Fig. 2' is a side elevation of the head with the mop-rag inserted and ready for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Myinvention contemplates an improved con;
' struction ofthatclass of mop-heads which consist of a clamp of wire affixed to a suitable handle or holder; and my improvement consists iirthe detailed construction and combination of parts of the wire clamp, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
My improved wire mop-head is composed of three parts-via, a frame, A, of malleable iron or iron wire, which has a shank, a, for its attachment to'the end of the mop-handle; an inside wire frame, B, the arms of which are bent to form eyes or hinges b b, by which said inner frame is hinged to the top part of the outer frame, A; and a spring-wire latch or catch, 0, which is attached to the top part of the inner frame, and is bent at its free ends to form S-shaped hooks c c, which clasp and interlock the sides of the wire frames B and A. The bottom cross-bar'of the iron frame A is arched, as shown at A, which gives it sufficient spring to hold the mop-rag, which is clamped between it and the inner frame, B, firmly in place. The wire latch is bent or curved so as to form loops, (shown at 0 0,) in which the fingers may be placed when itis desired to release the latch from its hold upon the sides of frame A.
The advantages of my improved mop-head are its cheapness and durability, and convenience in opening and closing for the insertion and removal of the mop-rag, which may be removed or replaced in a moments time.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim V and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The improved mop-head herein shown and described, composed of the frame A, arched at A and having shank a, hinged wire frame B, and wire spring-latch O, constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I'claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH KESSLER ALTERS.
