UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH S. GOODMAN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
OV'ERA-LLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,599, dated July 25, 1882.
Application filed one 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvements, showing the cords or straps attached to apair of overalls and the sliding hooks attached tothe rings of the suspenders which support the pantaloons; and Fig.2 is a detached view of one of the cords and its sliding hooks.
The inconvenience and annoyance to which workmen are subjected who find it necessary to wear overalls in order to preserve their pantaloonsand keep them from being soiled through not having facilities for comfortably and expeditiously supporting their overalls are well known.
The object of thepresent invention is to provide the overalls with cords or straps, which are suitably attached or secured to the overalls at both ends, each of which has two slid ing hooks which can be hooked onto the ordinary metallic rings or loops of the suspenders which support the pantaloons.
My invention consists of one or more cords or straps'secured at both ends to a pair of overalls, and each provided with two sliding hooks, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I employ three cords-two in front and one behind-each of which is sewed or otherwise secured to the overalls, having been first provided with two hooks, which will be hereinafter more fully described. The upper end of each hook is bent at right angles to the lower end, which is secured to the cord, and outwardly from its mate 011 the same cord. The upper ends of the hooks, which may be spring-hooks,'if desired, hook onto the rings of the suspenders, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The cords, with the hooks, are made with the overalls at the factory, whereby the overalls are sold in a condition which permits of their being put on at once and secured in place.
In the drawings, A represents a pair of suspen ders having rings a and straps to, by which they are attached to a pair of pantaloons, B.
(J are cords or straps secured at both ends to the overalls D, and provided with sliding hooks c. r
Changes in construction can be made without departing from the principle of my invention-as, for instance, instead of the cords or straps being made separately from the overalls and secured thereto by any suitable means, they can be made in one piece with the overalls.
It will be remarked that each cord being attached to the ring by two hooks, the legs of the cords are of equal length, and two frictional bearing-surfaces are provided, whereby the cord moves freely through the hooks.
Having thus full y described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cord or strap attached to a pair of overalls at both ends, in combination with two sliding books, as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pair of overalls having a series of cords or straps attached thereto or formed in one piece therewith, each cord having two sliding hooks, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A cord or strap attached to a pair of overalls at both ends, in combination with two hooks, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH S. GOODMAN.
