This inventionrelates-to fountains and more particularly to fountains for the watering of chickens, animals, andthe like.
. Doublewalled fountains are desirableas providing better temperature control, tending-to preventexcessive heatingofthe liquid in summer as well as freezing in the winter. The present invention relates to such a double walled fountain .in-which the inner container is open at'its top and permanently secured. to the bottom or-pan with a valve being provided in the lower portion of the-side wall of said inner container which is normallybiased; towardclosed position. This permits easy filling of the inner containerand the carrying thereof .to thepoint of use without loss of 1 liquidfrom the fountain. The outer container or-cover when'placedin telescoping relation over the inner container is arranged to engage a valve actuatingvv member, thereby releasing the water and allowing it to flow into the pan. However the cover is entirely closed'except for its open bottom and is lower-edge extends below the rim of the flange of the pan; hence upon being locked in place onithe jinner container :11; forms. a siphon which prevents. lossof water but which maintainsja predetermined desired level inthepan for drinking purposes. 1
lt isinconvenient to have to fitthecover in place where that operation requiresthe threadingof pins and slots, such as in the case with a bayonet type of lock,'particularly inasmuch as this/engagement must .be effected in an area which is somewhat obstructed and difficult to observe. In accordance with the present-invention, afountain of this construction is provided which .does not require andinterfittingofpins andslots and in which thecover may be lowered into place in asimple way, with the assurance that it will find its proper position without the necessity for Jcareful guiding or indexing. Thereafter vit-may .belockediin place by a simple twisting motion which does not require the engaging of pins or slots. Furthermore the twist to produce-the locking action can be made in either direction relative to the inner'container, a plurality of spaced locking members being provided such that this easily and quickly detachable locking action can be readily obtained. the diameter of the cover being slightly greater than that of container so that it can be received in telescoping relation thereover. It will be evident from Fig. 1 that when so received and in operative position, the bead 36 extends into the pan below the level of the rim IT, thus forming a siphon controlling the level of the liquid in the annular drinking portion of the fountain. Except for its open bottom, the cover member 35 is entirely closed and sealed, having a conically shaped top portion 31 with an outer carrying handle 38 secured thereto by means of rivet 39 or the like.
On its inside top surface cover; member 35 carries a locking structure indicated generally at 40.- As shown in Fig. 5 this member is conveniently formed of a single piece of fiat sheet metal stamped to conform to the inner surface of the cover itself, and with attaching holes 41 to receive the rivets 39 by means of which it is held in. fixed relation within the cover. At each end the member is formed withv 9. depending portion 42 which carries outwardly extending hookshaped members 43, the top surfaces of which are 1 suitably curved as shown at M to con-form generally with the curvature of the under side of handle grip 32.
The operation of the fountain is as follows. With the cover removed the, inner container is first filled with water or other liquid as desired, the valve 21 remaining closed under the action of spring 22 and thus preventing, discharge of the liquid into the pan and making it possible to readily carry the filled container from place to place. When in its desired location the cover member 35 is merelyplaced'over the inner container and lowered into position thereon. Toward the end of the lowering movement the wall of the cover bears against the curved spring member 22 pressing the valve inwardly to-open position and allowing the liquid to flow outwardly into the annular drinking space of th pan. It will be evident that since cover 35 is completely sealed above its lower edge, the water level will be allowed to raise in the pan only to that point determined by the position of the lower bead 36 of the cover, thus maintaining the level in the fountain at a desired height.
With the cover so lowered it is conveniently locked in place merely by twisting the same relative to the inner container sufficiently to cause one or the other diagonally opposite pair of hookshaped members to engage beneath the handle grip 32. Such twist can never exceed a half revolution, and is usually somewhat less. Further the twist can be produced in either direction since either diagonally opposite pair of such hookshaped memb ers will produce the same mterfitting and locking action.
When so locked the fountain is ready for operation, and as will be evident it can also be transported from place to place. byflmeans of handle 3 B, if so desired. When refillin is desired, the cover can be detached readily bysimply reversing the twist and lifting the same away from the inner container.
The invention thus provides a simple, easily operated and highly satisfactory double walled fountain construction which can :be filled and used simply under all conditions.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited tothis precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A double walled fountain comprising an inner upright container having an open top and a closed bottom, a pan shaped portion extending outwardly of and substantially in the same plane with the bottom of said container, said pan shaped portion having an upwardly extending rim, a normally closed valve in the lower part of said container below said rim and having a part extending outwardly of the wall of said container, a handle adjacent the top of said inner container, an outer inverted cover open only at its bottom receivable in enclosing relation over said inner container and movable to an assembled position against 'a portion thereof in which position the lower edge of said cover is located above the bottom of said pan and below said rim with a portion of said outer cover in position to engage said valve to effect the opening thereof, and locking means carried on said cover member havingfin terlocking engagement with said handle on said inner container upon relative twisting of said cover with respect to said inner container to releasa'bly locksaid outer cover in said assembled position thereon.

A double walled fountain comprising anzmner upright container having anl open. top'an'd a closed bottom, a pan shaped portion extending outwardly of and substantially in the same plane with the bottom of said container said pan shaped portion having an upwardly extending rim, a normally closed. spring-pressed valve in the lower part of said container belowasald rim and having a part extending outwardly of the wall of saidcontainer, a handle adjacent'the top of said inner container, an outer inverted cover open only at its bottom receivable in enclosing relation over said inner container: and movable to an assembled position against the upper end thereof inwhich position the lower edg of said cover is located above'the bottom of said pan and below said-rim with the side of said outer cover in position to engag 'saidvalve to effect the opening thereof, and a plurality of spaced locking members carried on. the inside of said cover member having interlockingengagement with said handle on said inner container upon relative twisting of said cover with respect to said inner container to releasably lock said outer cover in said assembled position thereon.
