Description
Oct. 1952 E. c. PETERSON REPAIR MEMBER FOR BQTTLE CASES Filed March 15, 1948 INVENTOR.
n w r e d P C m .n I E BY 2mm Patented Oct. 21, 1952 Unites? STATES Y pepsin-MEMBER FOR BOTTLE CASES Einan-C. Peterson; Mitchell, Sdlakv; assignor, of I This invention relatessto new and useful. improvements and structural refinements in bottle cases, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate a convenient repair of such-cases, when the partitions thereof become damaged, broken or otherwise mutilated.
This object is achieved by the provision of a repair member which may be firmly and securely attached to unbroken portions of the bottle case in a superimposed relation to the broken partition, the repair member thus installed functioning in the'manner of the original partition, so that the conventional procedure of dismantling and rebuilding the case in order to repair the broken partitions is eliminated.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of a repair member assuming the form of a strip having reinforcing flanges provided on this intermediate portion While its end portions are securable to the case, the reinforcing fianges substantially enhancing the rigidity and sturdiness, not only of the repair member itself, but of the case as a Whole.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a repair member which is simple in construciton, which Will readily lend itself toeconomical manufacture, and which, as aforesaid, may be quickly and easily installed.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View showing a portion of a bottle case with a broken partition repaired in accordance with the teachings of the invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the subject shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3' is a cross sectional View, taken sub-' stantially in the plane of the line 33 in Figure 2; and,
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the severalviews.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the reference character I 2 designates partitions of a bottle case of a conventional type, one of these partitions, indicated at l4, having been broken as at I6.
Normally, this broken partition could be reone-third to :Richard P.-Ellwein.;and one-third"- to Wilford L.;Johnson, both of Mitchell, S Dak.
, p l "ation Maren--15, 1948, Se1fial-No. 14,887
'* 1c1aimr'*(c1. 217519) pairedsby dismantling ithezentire case, inserting-a new partition and thereafter reassembling the case, which obviously is a tedious procedure.
Therefore, the instant invention contemplates the provision of a repair member designated generally by the reference character l8, the same preferably assuming the form of a metallic strip 20 having a pair of flat end portions 22 formed with apertures to receive suitable fastening elements, such as for example, nails 24, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
For purposes of reinforcement, the longitudinal edge portions of the intermediate portion of the strip 20 are downwardly angulated to provide a pair of spaced parallel reinforcing flanges 26, whereby the intermediate portion of the strip assumes an inverted U-shaped cross sectional configuration, as is best shown in Figure 4.
Moreover, for purposes of reinforcement the intermediate portion of the strip 20 may also be provided with a longitudinally extending, centrally disposed groove 23, substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings.
When the invention is placed in use, such as .for example, in repairing the case after a partition 14 has been broken, the member I8 is positioned on the case so that the fiat end portions 22 thereof rest upon a pair of the partitions l2 at each end of the broken partition l4,-to which surrounding partitions, so to speak, the member I8 is rigidly secured by means of the fastening elements 24.
The member l8 should be secured in such manner that it is disposed in superimposed relation with respect to the broken partition l4, whereby the repair member will assume the function of the broken partition itself. It is to be noted that by virtue of the reinforcements 26, 28, the rigidity of the member itself will not only be increased, but the sturdiness of the entire bottle case willbe substantially enhanced.
Moreover, by assuming th function of the broken partition, the member [8 will effectively separate the individual bottles in the case, thereby preventing such bottles from coming in contact and possibly becoming broken.
It may also be added that the repair member may be quickly and easily installed by simply employing a hammer'for driving the fastening elements or nails 24 into the unbroken partitions, so that complicated machinery is unnecessary in order to properly and adequately repair the case.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention Will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and, accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: r
In combination with a bottle carrying case having crossed partitions therein forming separate cells, a U-shaped member adapted to be, inverted upon the position of a broken partition as a replacement of a missing part thereof, the yoke portion of said member lying substantially in line with the tops of all of the named partitions, the cheeks of said member depending a considerable distance into a cell along said partition and spanning the space between two adjacent partitions between which the first named partition lies, extensions on the yoke portion by which to aflix the latter to each of two spaced partitions, and a flange at the end of each cheek for attachment to said two adjacent partitions.
