SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,408, dated July 18, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT W. TURNER, of Kosse, in the county'of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Head-Protector; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the invention applied to the head of the wearer. Fig. 2 is adetailof oneof theextensible joints.

My invention relates to an improved headprotector or skeleton mask, which is designed to be covered with netting and to be worn as a protection against mosquitoes and other poisonous insects, and whichis also applicable to bee-keepers use, thrashers, gunners, railroad-brakemen, &c.

The invention consists in the improved construction of said skeleton mask and in the means for adjusting it to different sizes of heads, as hereinafter fully described.

In the drawings,A represents a more orless circular rim or head-band, which is arranged in horizontal position; andB G are two crownpieces connected to the head-band at their ends, and rising therefrom and crossing each other at the top, at which point they are connected to each other.

D is the brim, which is bent in the form of a U-shaped loop and connected at its ends to the head-band. This brim-piece is stayed by a brace, E, to the top of the crown-piece, and this brim, with the pieces B and U and the head-band A, constitutes a cap, which may be covered with other substance than netting and used independently of the other parts, if desired. To this cap portion is detachably fastened a skeleton face-mask composed of pieces F G H.

F goes under'the chin, and has its two upper ends adjustably connected to pieces 0 of the crown by sliding connections d (I.

G is connected to the piece F at the throat, and, rising and projecting in front of the face, is attached adj ustably to the front crown-piece by a sliding connection, b.

' H H are horizontal stay-pieces connected in the middle to the PIGCBVG" and at their ends'sc to the chin-piece F, and forming in connection with these parts a skeleton mask for the face, which, by reason of its sliding connections at b and 01, may be slid up orpulled down to adapt it to the size of the wearersface, or may be entirely detached.

I is a circular piece, which is connected at its lower end to the chin-piece at a, and at its npperend is fastened to the back of the headband at c. This piece I occupies a positio'n 6o just behind the ears. J J are twin loops, also connected to the head-band A and the piece I at the point 0, which twin loops are made in one piece, and extend respectively over each shoulder to hold the netting away from the neck.

The material of which each of the members of the skeleton frame is composed is preferably thin strips of spring-steel, like that used in hoop-skirts but any other material may be used, if desired.

In modifying my invention I may not make the attachment of the mask portion to the cap portion adjustable, as shown at b d, but may connect all the parts permanently together.

In distinguishing my invention from what has been done before in this line,-I would state that I am aware that face-masks for the use of baseball players have heretofore been con- 8c structed of skeleton wires and secured to the head by independent fastenings, and I lay no claim to the mask separately considered. When combined with the cap portion, as shown by me, it holds the mask in place and dispenses with the necessity for any other hat, as the cap portion is designed to be covered with some closely-woven material. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is-- 1.
