Description

Oct. 7, 1952 w. w. USRY HOLDING MEANS FOR LOOM BUSHINGS Filed June 20, 1951 INVENTOR r LA.-
ATTORNEY VVoomeow VVL (JCS/Ev;
Patented Oct. 7, 1952 i UNITED STATES PA ENT TOFFICE 1 My invention relates to improvementsin picker mechanism for looms; and more particular to the holding means for the bushing which receives the guide rod or spindle f or the picker.
In at least one type of automatic loom'for the 5 weaving of textile fabrics, the picker is slidable on a guiding rod ors plndle one end of which is supported in a bushing-which is screwed into a threaded opening in the lay end-plate of they loom, In the operation of the loom the vib-ration and the shock incident to boxingof the shuttle, causes the externally screw threaded bushing for the picker rod to work loose .and thereby interfere with the proper guiding of the picker and the shuttle. The vibration is such that the screw threads in the hole of the lay endplate wear to such an extent that the plate must be replaced by a new one as often as twice a year. That, of course, means not only the substantial cost of the new lay end-plates and the cost of replacement laboigbut also the loss due to the loom being out of service Various attempts have been made to overcome this trouble but they have not been entirely"satisiacto1'y; and
the loom manufacturer has continued to use these troublesome threaded bushings without any looking or holding means therefor. After considerable study and experimental work with, different means for holding the threaded bushing,
I have thoroughly tested the one herein disclosed and have found it to be entirely efiective and satisfactory. The principal object of the invention is, therefore, to provide an improved holder or look for the screw threaded bushing which holds oneend of the picker guiding rod or splndle of a loom.
Such threaded bushings are provided with hexagonal wrench-engaging heads to permit them to be screwed into the threaded holes in the lay end-plates, and it is another object of the invention to provide a holding or locking device which may be applied to the bushing head in any of the various positions it may be in when it is tightened in its threaded hole in the lay end-plate.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple, effective and relatively inexpensive, and which may be quickly and easily applied.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts and the novel features of construction hereinafter de-. scribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show the present preferred embodiment of the invention.
2 Claims. (Cl. 139-158) 2v In the drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 are perspective views of the oppqsitesides of parts of a well known type of loom to illustrate the application of the invention;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the outer face orside I of a lay end-plate showing my locking or holding device applied thereto and to the head of the bushing, the picker guide rod being also shown and apart of the end-plate being broken away;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on line i'l ofFig.3,and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the new bushing holding or locking member. r
In Figs. 1 and 2 are shown parts of the well known 0-6 automatic textile fabric weaving loom marketed by Crompton & Knowles Loom Works of Worcester, Massachusetts, Fig. 1 showing my bushing holding member applied to the lay endplate I'D. Thisplate I0 is removably fixed to the end of the frame work I I of the lay andis formed 1 with a screw threaded hole l2 which receives the bushing I3.
The plate i0 is also formed with vertically extending slots 14, one above and the other below the hole I2 as seen in Fig. 3. The bushing I3 is in the form of a cylindrical sleeve with an enlarged hexagonal or other flat faced head l5 at one end to Which a wrench may be applied. The exterior of the sleeve or body is screw threaded from its head to its opposite end for engagement with the threads in the hole [2. The cylindrical bore I5 through the bushing is of a diameter to snugly receive end of the guide rod or spindle I! for the slidable picker, the rod 11 also passing through a hole in a part of the lay frame II, as seen in Fig. 4. The other end portion of the rod or spindle I! which carries the usual buirer I8 for the picker stick is suitably supported and held against rotary and endwise movement on the lay frame. The above described parts are all old in the above identified loom.
My invention comprises a bushing engaging and holding member or plate 25 and means for adjustably fastening it to the lay end-plate It. The member 25 may be cast or otherwise formed of suitable metal, and it is preferably in the form of a substantially fiat elongated plate, one end portion 26 of which may be of substantially cirbe of generally segmental shape. Formed centrallyin the smaller end 26 is a flat walled hole or opening 28 shaped to snugly receive the head [5 of the bushing, such head being usually of hexagonal shape. The larger end 21 is formed 1 with an arcuate slot 29 which is concentric with and support one.
the center of the hole 28 and hence with the bore 16 of the bushing l3 when the end 26 is seated on the head l5 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The size and proportions of the locking member or plate 25 are such that when it is applied to the bushing the slot 29 may be disposed across either of the slots M in the lay end-plate, and hence a clamping bolt 30 disposed in the intersecting slots may be used to securely fasten th'e'device to the lay end-plate. The head of the bolt may engage the outer face of the portion 21 and on the screw threaded end of the bolt there are applied an ordinary washer 3|, a lock washer 32 and a nut 33, as seen in Fig. 4. The provision of the slot 29 in connection with the hexagonal hole 28 is important since it permits a portion of the slot 29 to intersect one or the other of the slots M without regard to the position of the head I5 when the bushing is screwed tight in the hole l2.
When the bolt 30 is tightened to rigidly clamp the device against the lay end-plate the bushing 13 will be rigidly held even though the threads in the hole l2 have been worn because hole 28 is of a size to snugly fit the head l5. An extended test of the device has shown that it will effectively prevent the loosening of the bushing and wear of the threads in the hole l2 so that the life of the lay end-plate is greatly 'extended' The use of the device therefore saves considerable expense in the operation of a loom.
In the drawing the spindle or rod I1 is shown as terminating at the outer face of the bushing head l5 but in practice it projects beyond said outer face. In some looms such projecting end carries a small oil or grease box to lubricate the spindle. Also in some looms a metal strip bears against such projecting end of the spindle to prevent end-wise movement of the latter. These 0ld parts are not illustrated, but their use does not interfere with the application of my invention since the plate 25 lies in the plane of the head l5, The slots M in the lay end-plate receive bolts for fastening the latter to the lay frame I I. One of these bolts may be the bolt 30 which is in such case made a little longer than the bolt (not shown) in the other slot i4.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made of a guiding spindle for a picker, the bushing having a flat faced wrench-engaging head, said means comprising a substantially flat and elongated plate having at one end a flat-walled opening shaped to fit the head of the bushin and at its other end an arcuate slot concentric with said opening and disposable in intersecting relation with the slot in the lay end-plate, and a screw threaded fastening to be positioned in the intersecting slots for clamping said plate against the lay end-plate.
2. The combination of a lay end-plate having a screw threaded hole and a slot adjacent said hole, a bushing to hold one end of a picker guiding spindle, said bushin having a flat-faced head at one end, its other end having external screw threads to engage the threads in said hole, a bushing-holding plate having a flat walled opening to fit said head of the bushing and an arcuate slot concentric with said flat-walled opening and disposed in intersecting relation to said slot in the lay end-plate, and a screw threaded fastening in said intersecting slots to clamp said holding plate against said lay end-plate, p
