HUNTERS GLOVE 0R MITTEN Filed Dec. 4, 1950 INVENTOR r, W (TTORNE Patented Sept. 9, 1952 UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE Aloysius L. Farrell, Bloomfield, Conn.
Application December 4, 1950, Serial No. 199,122
2 Claims.
This invention relates to hunters gloves or mittens and particularly to an improved form of glove or mitten in which provision is made for an opening in the palm portion to permit withdrawal of the index finger sufiieiently to discharge a firearm.
An object of the present invention is to provide a lined leather glove or mitten having aligned slits or openings cut through the lining and an outer layer usually of leather in the palm portion adjacent the position assumed by the index finger within the glove so that the finger may be thrust forwardly through the openings or slits in the lining and outer glove material far enough to reach the trigger of a firearm, the opening in the leather or other material of which the outer layer of the mitten is made having an inner fiap or extension stitched to the inner surface of the mitten material along one side of the slit, there being also a flap stitched partially about its periphery to the outer surface of the leather or other material of the mitten and overlapping the opening or slit in the leather.
One feature of advantage of the invention is that the inner flap is attached along one side of the opening or slit in the leather and on the under side thereof so that it may underlie the pposite side of the slit or opening in the leather or other material of which the mitten is made.
And finally it is an object of the invention to provide a relatively heavy and warm glove or mitten having its index finger opening maintained substantially closed by overlapping flaps but which may be opened by the index finger quickly and which after retracting the finger into the glove will cause the flaps to reassume their overlapped or closed positions.
With the above and other objects in view the 1 invention includes the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawing annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, I have shown the invention embodied in a lined leather mitten but it will be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a mitten made in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2' is a similar view of the mitten shown I I 2 in Fig. 1 showing the outer stitched along one of its sides, and 7 I Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the mitten shown in Figs. 1 and 2 taken on the plane of line 33 in Fig. 1.
In the above mentioned drawing, there has been shown but one embodiment of the invention which is now deemed preferable. but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring more in detail to the figures of the drawing it will be seen that there has been provided a form of mitten which has been provided with an overlying flap covering and normally concealing a slit or opening in the upper palm portion of the leather or other material of which the glove or mitten is made.
The body portion of the mitten may be of conventional form comprising palm and back panels Ill and I2 each of which panels is provided with a fabric lining 20. The thumb receiving portion 16 may also be of standard or usual construction and provided with a lining l8 similar to that of the body portion. As shown in Fig. 3, the lining may comprise a palm panel 20 and back panel 22 similar to and co-extensive with panels I0 and I2.
In the palm portion I 0 of the body material and lining 20 are provided slots 26 and 28 adjacent the position of the index finger when within the glove and long enough to permit easy withdrawal of the finger. On the inner face of the glove material 10 and stitched thereto alon one edge of the slit 26 is a small inner flap 30. This flap 30 lies between the glove material l0 and lining material 20 and underlies the slit 26 in the glove material.
On the outside surface of the palm portion In is a relatively large generally triangular fiap 32 of leather or other suitable material. the seams attaching one side of the flap to the glove may be that used for attaching the front and back panels l0 and I2 of the glove together. Another seam 34 preferably double stitched as shown attaches the lower portion of the flap 32 to the palm portion [0. The third side of the flap 32 is unstitched and permits the forefinger to pass through the slits 26 and 28 in the lining and glove material and between the outer flap 32 and the palm portion [0.
When the forefinger is retracted into the glove or mitten the inner flap 30, the glove material of the palm I0 and the outer flap 32 lie closely flap before being One of v 3 together so that the mitten is substantially as warm as one of conventional construction.
I claim as my invention:
1. A mitten comprising outer palm and back panels, a lining comprising co-extensive front and back panels, said outer palm panel and palm lining panel having aligned slits formed therein adjacent the forefinger of the wearer, an inner fiap attached to said outer palm panel adjacent the slit and extending between the outer panel and lining panel to cover the slit in the outer panel, and an outer flap extending from the seam connecting the palm and back panels of the mitten and extending over and covering" the slit in the palm panel. 7
2. A hunter's mitten comprising cuter palm and back panels, and a lining for saidpanels, said palm panel and palm lining having aligned slits formed therein adjacent the forefinger of the wearer, an inside flap attached to said palm panel adjacent its slit, andasubstantially triangular outside flap having aseamextending along one side of the flap across a portion of the palm REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
