'I'his invention relates .improvements in` .diillcult to find room for as many coat or `garment `hangers as are needed to lproperly support th'ei clothing that must be stored in the closet. ,A large number of persons are touring the :country in automobiles and must carry `many 'articles of clothing. Automobiles are not well `suited for transporting clothing except in boites,
suitcases `'or trunks and tourists who stop fre- "quently -at hotels or tourist camps gprefer` to `transpori'f-the greater part of their clothing `suspended from garment hangers of the usual kind.
It is now customary to provide small double ended hooks of which one may be positioned on the top edge of each car window in the rear compartment. Such hooks are small and as a rule only a single hanger can be supported lfrom each window, which limits the capacity to carry garments suspended from hangers.
It is the object of this invention to produce a simple, inexpensive device that can be suspended from a hook, a bar, or from the upper edge of an automobile window and which shall be so constructed that it will support a plurality of coat vor garment hangers with garments thereon.
A further object is to produce a device for the purpose ydescribed that shall be so constructed that it may be supported from either end, one
end having means for attaching it to the top of an automobile window pane and the other Vend having means for effecting a supporting connection with a. hook or bar and which will also serve for a hand grip for carrying the device with the loaded hangers. to and from an automobile.
A still further object ,is to produce a device of the class specified, oi such a design that it can be constructed by simple tools and with a minimum amount of hand work.
The above and other objects that may become apparent as the description proceeds are obtained by means oi a construction that will now be described in detail and for this purpose reference will be had to the accompanying drawing in which the invention has been illustrated, and in which:
. Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing an automobile window, partly open, with an improved garment hanger support in operative position thereon;
geminis. (origin-4st) Figure 2 is a section taken on line :I+-2, Figure 1; e
Figure 3 is a side view showingl-the support device'suspended from a rod;
Figure 4 is a lfront elevation of the :device `shown in Figure 3,;
Figure 5 is a view showing agplurality of `coat hangers suspendedv from the support.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary section, similar to Figure 2 and shows the device supported from 4a door.; and
Figure 'I is a section similar to Figure Zand shows a modified form of hook thatcan be supported either froma window `or a--door. I
or window opening. rhis glass issosupported that the window may be opened or closed by moving the glass pane up or down by suitable mech anisms that have not been shown.
In Figure 1 the window has been shown slightly open and the supporting device that forms the subject of this invention has been shown in place thereon and supported from the upper edge of the pane by means of a hook Il whose construction will be hereinafter described in greater detail.
The supporting device itself in the form in which it is presently constructed, is made from a piece of thin rod or heavy wire that has been designated by reference numeral I2. This wire is provided at one end with a loop like that designated by reference numeral i3 to which the hook il is connected by an integral loop ii' in the manner quite clear from the drawings. The wire is then bent into a series of closed coils or rings I4. There may be as many coils as .desired, and the end of the wire opposite from hook Ii terminates in a hook i5 of sufilcient size to permit the device to be supported from a rodv like that indicated by i6 in Figures 3 and 4.
In Figure 2 a side elevation has been shown in which a number of ordinary coat or garment hangers of the type usually made from Wire have been indicated by dotted lines. the coat hangers being designated by reference numeral i1. It will be apparent from Figure 2 that as many coat hangers can be supported as there are coils or rings, for example, in the construction shown in Figures 1 to 4 in the drawing, there are five coils and therefore five coat hangers can be supported thereon.
In Figure 5 the support has been shown as held in a horizontal position with five coat "hangers and garments supported thereby. When either end is moved upwardly, the coat hangers space for all the clothes in closets and it is oftenI necessary to employ hooks fastened to the doors of the bedrooms. This invention, -by a' slight modification, can be adapted. for usewith either doors or windows. In Figure 6, the hook I l of ths'plenes 0f. the Coi allel to th plane of th hook, "s'a'id Hook being comprising a hook for engaging the top of th planar member, that portion below the hook being formed into a. plurality of closed coils of substantially equal diameters, the centers of the coils being spaced from each other a distance greater than the diameters of the coils, the portions of the rod like member connecting the coils beine Sbraishtand in sub tantalexialalignment,
` t ei'nggsubstaritilly pari |formed from sheet metalv and connected with the yend of the rod like member for pivotation about .anaxis perpendicular to the plane of the coils.
,s 2. AA device in accordance with claim 1 in which the hook has three right angularly related sides, onecf .which is pivotally connected at its Figure 2 has been widened to t over the top'of door 10a. The widened hook has been designated .byl'lbV j In Figure 7, hook ll has been extendedand combined with hook IIb tothe endthat the invention may be supported rvfrom a ,window as shown or from the 'top of a door. f
One common feature is thatA theV devices are provided with hooks so related to the coil or ring portion that the plane of the coils will be perpendicular to the door or window from which the device is supported.
Having described the invention what isclaimed as new is: Y
1. A garment hangersupport for use in supporting a plurality of hooked garment hangers 'from the top of a planar member such as a pane of glass or the like, comprising' a metal rod like Iendwiththe coiled member.
