" rel ase. ((124-233) This invention relates to new and,useful improvements in snap hooks enerally, and is directed to subject matter similar to myco-pending application, filed December 2, 1949, Serial No. 130,714, now Patent No. 2,560,550, issued July 17, 1951.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a snap hook in which the latching member or, tongue normally closing the same may be opened by pressing the same with a ring or the like to which a snap hook is to be secured, and which tongue may be positively urged to the open position to release the memberto which a snap hook is attached.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a snap hook of this character, which when open, the tongue thereof will not interfere with the free movement of a ring or the like into or out of the hook. V
Still another important object of the present invention is to provide a snap hook which is of simple and economical construction, and yet which will be durable and efficient for the purposes intended.
An important feature of the present invention resides in the provision 'of'tong'ue shields at the juncture of the body member at the ho'ok'for receiving the tongue when the latter is in the open position. The snap hook I0 comprises an elongated; hol low body member I2 having a hook I4 formed at one end thereof. A tongue I6 is positioned in the hollow body member I2 and is pivotedadjacent its inner end on a pivot pin I8 carried by the body member I2 so that the outer end 20 may be moved into and out of engagement with -the free end 22 of the hook I4, as clearly shown by the dotted and full line positions of the'tongu I6 shown in Figure 3. a I
In order to resiliently urge the-tongue I6 into the hook closing full line position shown in Figure 3,'the inner end of the tongue I6 and the in ner surface ofthe body member I2 are provided with opposed pro-tuberances 24 and 26, re's'pectively, and a coiled compression spring 28 is provided, the opposite ends of which are 'sea'tedabout the protuberances'24 and '26 to urge the same apart, thereby urging closing movement "of the tongue I6. Y i It is to be particularly noted that when the tongue i6 is moved into the dottedlin'e position line position shown in Figure 3 'thatbyvirtue of the fact that the outer end 20 of the same is received between the tongueshields 30-, the tongue I6 cannot interfere withthef-introductionor re moval from the snap hook of any object such as a ring or the like that the same may besecuredto.
As thus far described, it will be understood that an object such as a ring or the like may be en' gagedby the snap hook by, simplypressingsuch object against the free end 20' of the'tongue 'I B'to move the same into the dotted :line 1 position shown in Figure 3, and that upon further movement of such an object toward the end oithe hook I4 remote from the body member I2 the tongue I6 snaps to the full line os'iuonsnewn in Figure 3 under the action of the spring 28 to retain the same within the hook-IL r (6 which includes a sleeve 34 slidably positioned on the body member 12. A cross bar or pin 38 extends transversely through the sleeve 34, and the pin 36 slides in longitudinal slots 38 provided in the opposite sides of the body member l2 during longitudinal sliding movement of the sleeve 34 on the body member 12. As best shown in Figure 3, the pin 36 extends across the hollow interior of thebody member I! and is engageable with a cam surface 40 provided on the tongue l during sliding movement in the slots 38, it being evident from the drawings that upon movement of the sleeve 34 towards the hook l4 the tongue 7 IE will be moved from the full line to the dotted line position through the action of the pin 36 engaging the cam surface Ml.v

A snap hook comprising an elongated hollow body member having a hook formed at one end thereof, said body member including spaced tongue shields adjacent the juncture of the hook and the body member, an elongated tongue received in the body member and pivoted adjacent its inner end thereto, the outer end of the tongue being movable from a sheltered hook-opening position between the tongue shields to engage the hook closing the same, means yieldingly urging closing movement of the tongue, means for urging opening movement of the tongue comprising a sleeve slidable longitudinally on-the body member and having a pin extending transversely therethrough, said body having a longitudinal slot slidably receiving the pin, said tongue having a cam surface that is engaged by the pin to open the hook upon sliding movement of the sleeve in one direction, and means yieldingly urging sliding movement of the sleeve in the other direction.
7. The combination of claim 6, wherein said first means includes a compression spring seated between the body member and the inner end of the tongue.
