4 Claims.
This invention relates to a sectional hassock embodying a plurality of segments movable to an open position providing a plurality of relatively spaced seats and to a closed position providing a single hassock unit. My improved hassock preferably comprises a plurality of sectors pivoted together at the peripheral margin of the hassock. Each segment also preferably comprises a box-like chambered body open at the top for storage purposes and a seat cover pivoted thereto. Other means are also preferably provided for limiting the opening pivotal movement of the segments and for securing the end se ments together when they are brought to the closed position. The production of a new and improved sectional hassock of this nature which can be opened up to provide a plurality of seats particularly adapted for use of television spectators comprises the primary object of the invention.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a preferred form of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the hassock in open position,
Fig. 4 is a front elevation thereof, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through one of the segments.
In the drawings It indicates the closed hassock unit embodying a plurality of segments l2. While I have illustrated the hassock as being of cylindrical form and comprising four sectors l2 pivoted together at the peripheral margin of the hassock as by hinges l4, it will be understood that other forms and arrangements can be employed as desired.
Each segment preferably comprises a box-like chambered body l5 open at the top for storage purposes and a seat cover It pivoted thereto at I8. A spring latch at 20 is adapted to hold the cover in closed position and the cover is preferably upholstered to form a cushioned seat. The segments are adapted to be open to the position illustrated in Fig. 3 to provide a plurality of seats in alignment.
Each segment is preferably provided with a plurality of studs 2! in the bottom for supporting the segments spaced from the floor and foldable ties, illustrated as pivotally connected links 22 pivotally attached to the segments at the 2 bottom, serve to limit the opening movement of the segments. The studs provide a space or pocket beneath the hassock for receiving the links when the segments are brought to the closed position of Figs. 1 and 2. A latch hook 24 and a cooperating stud 26 are also provided on the end segments for holding the end segments together with their end faces in contact.
It will now be apparent that I have produced a new and useful hassock for living room purposes that can be conveniently opened up to provide a plurality of seats particularly adapted to serve guests at the television, and, when the seats are not required, the several segments can be placed together with their V-shaped cooperating sides in face-to-face contact to form a hassock embodying the segments thus combined.
Having thus disclosed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hassock comprising a plurality of segments, each substantially triangular in horizontal cross section and having side walls extending from top to bottom of the hassock and including two relatively V-shaped inner side walls and an outer side wall, the segments being relatively movable to an open position providing a plurality of relatively spaced seats and to a closed position providing a, single hassock unit with all of the inner side walls in face to face contact and the outer side walls disposed in circular alignment at the periphery of the unit.
2. The hassock defined in claim 1 in which the segments are pivoted together on vertical axes at the junctions of the inner and outer side walls and are relatively movable on the pivots to said open and closed positions.
3. The hassock defined in claim 2 plus foldable ties each attached at its two ends to two pivotally connected segments for limiting the opening pivotal movement thereof, and means providing pockets for receiving the ties when the segments are moved to the closed position.
4. A hassock comprising a plurality of like segments having outer side walls, inner side walls adapted to cooperate with each other and bottom walls, said walls providing a box-like chambered body open at the top for storage purposes, and a seat cover pivoted to the top of each segment and movable to open and closed positions, the segments being relatively movable to an open position providing a plurality of relatively spaced seats and to a closed position providing a single hassock unit with all of said inner side walls in face to face contact and said outer side walls disposed in circular alignment at the periphery of the unit.
