Description

LIA. MONTGOMERY. PASSENGER RAILWAY CAR SEAT OR CHAIR.

APPLICATIONHLED SEPT. 6, 1919.

Patented Feb. 3,1920.

v STATES PATENT OFFICE.

LEWIS A. MONTGOMERY,-OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, ASSIGN'QR OF Ow -HALF TO J'OHN M. BICHENS, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.

PASSENGER RAILWAY-CAB SEAT OR CHAIR.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Feb. 3, 1920.

Application filed September 6, 1919. Serial No. 322,214.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS A. MoNreoM- ERY, citizen of theUnited States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and 'State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Passenger Railway-Car Seats -or Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in passenger railway car seats or chairs, and has particular reference to an attachment for. the back element of the seat or chair, which attachment is adapted to be opened, and used for various purposes.

An important object of the invention is to provide an attachment of. the above mentioned character which may serve, when opened, as a writing desk, a lunch table, a baggage, or luggage tray, or as a seat or crib for a baby, while not necessarily restricted to these uses.

Other objects and vention will be apparent advantages of the induring the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

. Figure 1 is a perspective view of a passenger car seat or chair embodying my invention, showing the attachment closed,

Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1, and,

Fig. 3 is a erspective view of the chair with the attac ment open. v

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the seat element of the seat or chair, which may be suitably upholstered, and supported 'by legs 6.

The numeral ment, embodying main opening 9 formed therein and extending for-the. greater portion of its length. This opening passes through the opposite sides of the back element. This backelement isprovided with suitable upholstering 10, as shown.

The numeral 11 designates back sections or trays, which embody framework 12, suitably upholstered, as shown at 13. These back sections or trays are adapted I to fit 7 designates the back eleplates are arranged back sections are in position. oted at 18, have pivotal connection withthe 11 and with the frame being a framework 8, having a snugly within the opposite sides ofthe opening 9, and are held in the closed position by frictional engagement with the back element. The back sections or trays are hinged 'at their lower edges to the framework of the back element, as shown at 14, to swing in a vertical plane, for assuming horizontal or vertical positions. Pull straps 15 are secured to the top of these back sections or.

trays, whereby they may be conveniently swung to the open position.

The inner sides of the back sections or trays are preferably lined with plates 16, formed of any suitable material, and these uppermost when the the open or horizontal Support straps or links 17, pivback sections or trays work 8, as shown. These support straps fold into the space or opening 9,when the back sections'are closed.

The numeral 19 designates rails, each of which embodies longitudinal bars 20, carried by vertical posts 21 having reduced ends 22, for detachable engagement within openings 23, formed in the plates 16. These rails are therefore adapted, to be detachably secured to the upper surfaces of the back sections, when in the open position, such rails then vertical. Particular attention is called to the fact that these rails and the support'straps 17 form an .inclosing frame with the back sections, the Same being then adapted to serve as a crib for a baby, and will prevent the baby from falling'out of the same, which might otherwise be caused by the movements of the train. The opening 9 passing through the opposite sides of the back'element 7, enables the baby to be laid transversely within this opening and supportedby thetwo back sections, prgviding ample space and comfort for the When either back section or tray is used as a writing desk, or table, its rail 19 is removed therefromg as illustrating the Fig. 3. This rail is then suspended from double ended hooks 24, having oppositely extending tines 25, for receiving the bars 20. When both back sections are in the closed position, both rails 19 are the double ended' hooks. permanently attached to chains 26 or the like.

The rails 19 are the back section by thereby L suspended from From the foregoing description, itis obvious that I have provided an attachment for'the back element of a car seat or chair which 1s adapted tobe used as ,a writing desk, lunch table, baggage or luggage tray or as a seat or crib for a baby.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described of a railway seator chair having an openring formed therein which exten s through the opposite sides thereof, of back sections pivoted to the back element and adapted for movement into the opposite sides of said opening, support straps connected with the back sections and back element and diagonally arranged when the back sections are open, and rails .detachably connected with the free ends of the back sections and coacting with the straps-for providing aisurrounding frame for the open back sections.

2. The combination with a back element of a railway seat or chair having an opening formed therein. which the opposite sides thereof, of back sections pivoted to the back element and adapted for movement into the opposite sides of said opening, back element and back sections and adapted sections are in the open position, rails detachably' connected with the free ends of the back sections in proximity to the support elements, means permanently connectextends through support elements connecting theto be diagonally arranged when the back ing the rails and back element, and hooks arranged within the opening of the back ele- .ment and secured. to the upper portion of the back element and adapted to receive and suspend said rails. I

In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in t e presence of two witnesses.-

LEWIS A. MONTGOMERY.

Witnesses C. W. TABOR, Miss J P. UNDERWOOD.
