Application December a 1 Claim.
The invention relates to electric irons,'and more especially to an iron of this type wherein cooling means for the operator and anindependent controlfonthe same is embraced with suchiron. .Theiprimaryobjectof the'invention is, the provision 'ofan 'iron'ofthis character, wherein the crown" of its "body" has' "counterseated therein an electric motor of the silent type operating a bladed fan, these i being located centrally of the said crown, so as to deliver a stream of air only in an upward vertical direction to cool the operator of the iron, not only at the handle area of such iron but for cooling the operator both face and other portions of the body within the range of the air stream while the iron is active or inactive.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character, wherein the cooling v fan is under direct control of the user of the iron,
as the electric power unit for the fan can be turned on or off at will through the medium of a hand switch independently of the turning on or off of the electric heating unit or element of such iron, which control for the last mentioned unit or element being of the usual well known construction, and it is independent of the switch for the electric power unit for the fan.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character, wherein the fan and its power unit are readily and easily accessible for the cleaning thereof with dispatch andalso these do not interfer with the efficient working of the iron for the purposes intended thereof, the fan and its power unit being located approximately at the middle of the crown of the body of the iron and will not detract from the normal appearance of the latter, while at all times under the direct control f its user.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character, which is simple in construction, throughly reliable and efficient in operation, neat and pleasing in appearance, conveniently controlled both in its ironing and cooling operations, possessed of few parts, and inexpensive to manufacture and install, it being devoid of complicated parts, thus susceptible of quick repairs and replacements.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and as pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally an assembled electric iron which may be of any approved type, including a sole plate l0 having the usual outer ironing surface. This sole plate may be of any suitable and desired kind and for the purposes of illustration only has associated therewith within the body H of such iron a suitably insulated and protected heating element, not disclosed in detail, excepting generally at l2.
Within the crown 13 of the iron body 14 at a central point of the latter is a circular countersink forming a recess l5 which opens upwardly through the top surface l6 of said crown l3, while counterseated in this recess to snugly and permanently fit the same is a cup-shaped housing or casing H, which is entirely open at its uppermost portion. Removably mounted over the recess IS in any suitable manner for covering the upper open portion of the housing or casing I1 is a fully perforated transparent or translucent face plate l8, which on removal give access to the interior of the housing or casing I1.
Interiorly of the housing or casing I1 is properly anchored a removable power unit, preferably, a silent rotary electric driving motor IQ, of any approved type. having its driving shaft 20 fitted with a bladed fan wheel 2|, of a selected kind to be located and operate beneath the face plate l8 for the issuance of a stream of air directly through the perforations 22 in the said face plate I 8 in an upward flaring direction only so as to blow cooling air not only onto the hand of the user of the iron when grasping its handle but also upwardly onto the face and body and other adjacent areas thereto of such operator.
The body of the iron A at its heel end 23 is equipped with the usual electrical male plug-in tines 24 for an electric current supply detachable plug, not shown, which is of the usual construction, the tines 24 being connected in an electric circuit 28 with a hand controlled on and off switch, as at 29 to the heating element l2. This switch just mentioned can be located at any accessible exterior point of the iron body [4, and also functions to control the degree of heat by the said element 12 during the use of the iron for the purposes intended thereof.
The electric driving power unit I9 is in an electric circuit 25 which is independent of the heating element circuit before mentioned and has therein a manually operated or controlled on and off switch 26, which is located next to the housing or casing ill and close to the upperface of the crown I3 for the convenient turning on and off of the motor 19 at will, the circuit 25 being connected to the terminal male plug-in tines 24 heretofore referred to for the current supply detachable plug, not shown, and before mentioned.
The housing or casing I! has a heat insulating medium 21 about the motor l9, which also functions to silence the latter when in operation.
It is to be understood that in lieu of the perforations 22 there may be "substituted spaced slots or equivalents thereof, and the fan 2| when active blows a-stream of air in an upwardly direction only at the center. of the crown of thebody' of the iron. v
What is claimed is:
An assembly for an electric iron having a sole plate with a confined'electric heating element, a
4 shell rising over the sole plate having a countersink approximately at the center of its uppermost surface and a non-heat conductive handle bridging said countersink within the marginal edging of the shell for creating a finger receiving gap immediately beneath the handle to enable hand gripping of the latter directly above said countersink, a perforated cover for said countersink, a rotatable electrically powered bladed fan within the countersink "adjacent thefcover for forcing atmospheric air upwardly in said gap toward the handle, and means for controlling power to the fan, the power for operating said fan including an electric motor connected with said last named means and positioned in said countersink, and heat insulating means about said motor.
