Fig. 8 is an enlarged right end elevation of the needle bar shown in Fig. '7.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, and more particularly at first to Fig. 1, a comber half-lap constructed in accordance with the present inventionA is indicated generally by the reference numeral I and, as shown, comprises a body member I2 fltted with a usual form of mounting hubs I4 and presenting an arcuate mounting surface as at I6 on which a series of needle bars I8 may be grouped to constitute a comb segment.
In the half-lap construction of the present invention, the body member I2 is assembled with the mounting hubs I4 (as illustrated best in Fig.
2) so that the center about which the arcuate needle bar mounting surface I6 is formed, as indicated at 20, is disposed eccentrically with respect to the center 22A of the'mounting hubs I4 about which the half-lap III rotates. This eccentric arrangement is obtained lay-providing a shim member 24 to position the body member I2 off-center in relation to the mounting hubs I4 when these elements are assembled by suitable fastening means such as the screws 26. Accordingly, by proportioning the shim member 24 properly, -needle bars I8 of identical size may be employed informing the entire comb segment of the half-lap 'I0 while still allowing the use of needles of increasing neness from the leading needle bar, as has been mentioned previously, and will be pointed out more indetail presently.
The manner in which the needle bars I8 are arranged to form the comb segment of the halflap I0, according to one representative embodiment of the invention, is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and theform of the individual needle bars I8 employed in this embodiment is illustrated in further detail in Figs. 4 and 5'. Each of the needle bars I8 comprises generally a needle carrying portion 28, and a base portion 30 which is particularly adapted, as already noted above, for intertting in the course of assembling a group of the needle bars I 8 as a composite comb segment. Y
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the interfltting base portions 30 of the needle bars I8 are of cylindrical form with a groove 32 formed in one side face about a circular arc having the same radius as the cylindrical form of the base portion 30.' As a result, this groove 32 at one side face of each base portion 30 is adapted for interfitting over the entire cylindrical surface forming the other side face of the base portion 30 of any other needle bar 'I8, and it should also be noted that the cylindrical form of the base portions 30 further adapts them for line contact with the arcuate mounting surface I6. By virtue of this arrangement, when a group of the needle bars I8 are assembled with the side faces of their base portions 30 intertted, they are disposed for relative shifting at these side faces so thatA they may be conformed as a group with any arcuate surface that Will support them; and because the base portions 30 are adapted for line contact with the supporting arcuate surface the relative shifting necessary to find a proper intertted relation in conformance with this arcuate surface may be determined simply by bottoming the base portions 30 on the surface. o
Proper intertting. of the needle bars I8 in this manner may be obtained readily as apractical matter, too, because the intertting of the base portions 30 at side faces which are formed about circular arcs in accordance with the present invention is not perceptibly affected by dimensional variations within the range of usual manufacturing tolerances. Also, the interfitting of the needle bars I8 in this manner so that their proper interiitted relation is determined by contact of the base portions 30 with the supporting arcuate surface has the further effect of disposing each of the needle bars I8 with vtheir upper needle carrying portions 28 extending at a uniform angularity from the arcuate surface and therefore regularly spaced. Accordingly, by providing means for clamping a group of the needle barsl I8 sidewise in interfltted relation and for forcing their base portions 30 into contact with the arcuate mounting surface I6 of the half-lap ill), the needle' bars I8 may be readily disposed as acomb segment conforming exactly with the arcuate mounting surface I6, and having the needle carrying portions 28 extending with a uniform angularity so that they are regularly spaced at the working face of the comb segment.
The needle bars I8 may be assembled suitably for mounting in the manner just described above by means of tie rods 34 adapted to be extended through registering apertures 36 formed in each needle bar I6, theapertures36 being formed for a loose t on the tie rods 34 so as to provide adequate clearance for permitting the needle bar base portions 38 to shift as necessary in finding their proper interfitted relation. The tie rods 34 are preferably provided as aV solid bolt-like rod, as shown in Fig. 3, having a curvature corresponding generally to the arcuate form of the mounting surface I6, and having suncient flexibility for forcing the needle bar base portions 38 into contact with the. mounting surface I6. However, other types of tie rod means, Ysuch as stranded wrecable, for example, might be used, and means other than thev apertures 36 might be provided for engaging the needle bars I8 with the tie rod means, if desired.
In vusing 'tie rods 34 such as are illustrated in Fig. 3 to assemble the needle bars I8 for mounting, each tie rod 34 is threaded at its ends to receive nuts as at 38 and 40 that may be turned down o n clamping bars 42 and arranged for exerting sidewise pressure on` the interposed group of needle bars I8 and thereby clamp them in interfitted relation. The clamping bars 42 and 44 also serve as means for securing the assembled needle bars I8 on the arcuate mounting surface I6, the clamping bar 42 being adapted for engagement directly by mounting screws as at 46, andthe clamping bar 44 being formed with elongated slots as indicated by dotted lines at 48 in Fig. 3 to receive fastening bolts as at 56 so that it maybe positioned for sidewise clamping of the needle Vbars I8y as they areV mounted on the arcuate surface I6. The tie rod nuts 40 and the fastening bolts 50 may thus be finally tightened in turn. to lclamp theV base portions 30 of the needle bars I8 in intertted relation and rforce each of them to a position resting on the arcuate mounting surface I6. .f
The representation in Fig. 3 of the needle bar apertures 36in the nally clamped position of the needle bars I8 has been purposely exaggerated to emphasize, thefreedomfallowed for the needle'bars to find a proper interfltted relation as they are clamped in pl'ace. Actually these apertures 36 would'in the usual case be disposed in substantial alignment with leach aperture 36 arranged tangent to an arc zconcentric with the arciof the tie rods 34jand'therebyforrn` a continuous passageway Ato receive the tie rods 34.
;A The fact'thatthe'v arrangementof the' present invention' results in` av uniformfangular disposition'of the. needle bars I80n the mountingsur-v faceV IS; as already;'mentionedabovey allows the' needle carrying portions 20ct-the vneedle bars I8- to be shapedfor'presentingja substantially continuoussurface. at'the4 face ofthe comb "segment formed'by the needl'ebars'l S.' With' further reference to theI form Yof needle bar baseportion employed according to the-presv ent invention, it-should -be notedthat the base portions 30 illustrated'inFigs.i3,4 and 5,' and described above, areV only representative and that the-same advantagescan beobtained by shaping the needle bar-baseportions in other Ways as long as provision is madefor allowing themto find a -proper intertted relation about circular arcs. Any of these and other arrangements are possible and might be used to advantage in particular instances, although the embodiments illustrated in the drawings and described above are believed to be most practical under usual circumstances.
The present invention has been described in detail above for purposes of illustration only, and. is not intended to be limited by this description or otherwise except as defined in the appended claims.
