MAIER REED GUARD AND PORTABLE HOLDER FOR WOODWIND REEDS July 29, 1952 Filed July 20, 1949 INVENTOR Ma /e7" ATTCI R N EYS Patented July 29, i952 time GUARD My present invention'relates' to the general class of special receptacles and packages of the multiple compartment or receptacle typep and more specifically to an improvedreed. guard and portable holder'for woodwindreeds' in the nature of acsupporting rack or receptacle, which whi'le adapte'u .for various .othenrpurposes, is especially designed as part ofthe equipment of musicians and others for storingf presei ving' and carrying the reeds of instrumentspf the woodwind group; The primary purpose sof -;the. invention .is the provision of a compactly arranged device of this character upon which the reeds may readily be mounted to insure safety against breaking or other damage, and from which the reeds, when desired, may quickly be detached for use, with a musical instrument.
The portable holder, rack, or carrier includes a minimum number of parts that may with facility be manufactured at low cost of production, and the parts may with convenience be assembled to provide a durable holder that is simple in construction and efficient in the performance of its function.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a complete example of a physical embodiment of my invention in which the parts are combined and arranged in accord with one mode I have devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention. It will, however, be understood that changes and alterations are contemplated and may be made in these exemplifying drawings and structures, within the scope of my claim, without departing from the principles of the invention.

Within each open pocket of the base I is positioned a conventional reed R. having a rounded convex face 6, and the upper portion of this face is inclined or tapered in the usual manner, as at 1.
For retaining the reeds within their pockets a rectangular supporting wire, or rack band 8 preferably of resilient material, is mounted inv bores of the two lateral walls 2 and 3, and this rectangular band extends across the four pockets to form part of bridge racks or bridges. The band 8 is adapted to engage or receive the curled member ll. One of these curled members II is secured to a plate member l2 which serves to retain the reeds in their pockets. To reinforce the bridge racks formed by the band 8, a connecting brace 9 may be mounted in the central partition 4, with its ends secured to the rack band.
In mounting a reed in a pocket, the outer end or front end of the reed is slipped under the resilient bridge or plate member 12 and the reed is frictionally held in place between the bridge or plate l2 and the base I. By a reverse movement, the reed may be quickly withdrawn from its pocket when required for use on the musical instrument.
Further, thereed guard and holder of the present invention transfers a flat precision surface to the reed by holding the reed in position through the action of the clip so that those poratmospheric changes and of becoming damaged will be engaged by the clip. The reed guard and portable holder for woodwind reeds of the pres- I ent invention will eliminate shrinking and swelling of new reeds caused by atmospheric conditions, and will retain the reeds in their original pattern. Thus, it will be unnecessary for users to discard many newly purchased reeds as is the practice today. Further, by placing new reeds in til? 1101 181, and by intermittently wetting and face with the fiat side thereof down. A few min utes are allowed for permitting the moisture to penetrate the reed.
